Hi
Even I have never tried for paid anti virus.. So far I have used two free anti virus.. one of them is Avast which is I am using currently on my system. Its a good experience with it. It blocks almost all the viruses and other unwanted things. And also it stop the insecure sites opening on my browser.
The next one I am talking about is AVG. I was using it in past before the avast. So with current version , I am not much aware with it. But as per my experience form my past it is quite good too. And its free version is quite famous.

I use AVG but its current version is causing some problems. It almost hijacks my system while updating itself. Quite an experience!
As for Avast, I never come to know for how long will it stay free. Many of my friends tried this but always there was an expiry date....

Well.. Whenever we install the avast we have to register in it using our email address.. And after it, they give us one year expiry date.. But after a year you can again register freely with same email account.. So no expiry date for it.. Its free version is totally free. But may be not that reliable in compare of its paid version.
Thanks for providing info about avg's latest version. I am not using it since three years as I am using avast since then. AVG is good in anti virus field. I am sure they will solve this problem soon if you aren't the only one.

About one year ago, I turned off AVG temporarily for some work and forgot to turn it back on. I noticed this only when a particular virus (Virut) attacked on my system! From the info I got, it's quite difficult to get rid of. I used special removers to disinfect the files, but it survived somehow (Can't format ALL drives at the same time, a lot of important data is there). Recently I formatted my system drive and reinstalled windows and this virus triggered again. Just like last time AVG found, blocked and rendered useless a lot of infected executable files. And one of those was its installer itself (Why, all infected files were installers actually!!
). No option, you can only delete those files.
So had I have this information before, say one month prior, I would have used avast instead! I'll do next time I am forced to reinstall my OS.

I have used AVG antivirus software before and I liked it very much because it was efficient and it didn't slow down my computer at all. I would suggest that you stick to AVG because I am not sure the other free ones out there would be this efficient. The name sounds weird to me. I think AVG should be sufficient for you so you should stick to it. The AVG was free although you can pay for some extra features. But I think the free version is sufficient for everyday use.

Just take your time and you would definitely find it. You could search for it under help for example and hopefully it will take you there directly.
These videos may help

You could also do a search on youtube for better video tutorials if these ones are not sufficient. Or you could do a web search for other tutorials.
Hope this helps.

I donwloaded and installed an anti-virus software called 360. At first it worked well. I really don't have to pay for anything. As time goes by, I found that it doesn't work as well as the beginning. But it is just like another other anti-virus software. It was just good at the beginning but this feeling won't last for half a year. Later you will find that your computer will be slowed down anyway. And these anti-virus software keep upgrading and I wonder whether it is really good. Since it is not even better than the old version.
I love China

Dear mammots, big mistake there...try doing a system recovery on your pc to at least a week ago, and do it on safe mode by the way. That should get rid of the rogue anti-virus, as far as a free anti-virus, you can use Avast or AVG I wouldn't trust any other besides those two.
Another alternative which I use myself would be this. Use the trial of NOD32, and keep the installer on your computer, at the end of its trial, a few days before it expires, uninstall it and reinstall the trial from the installer which I told you to save. NOD32 is actually one of the best anti-virus software so I do suggest this method, I hope that you get everything fixed. good luck and goodbye friend.

Sorry to say, but you just downloaded a rouge application. I suggest that you use Avast! free. You can go to CNET's Download.com to download it. But before you install Avast!, I suggest that you also download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It is also a free. After installing Malwarebytes and updating it, run a full scan. After it detected the first infection, clean it right away, don't let Malwarebytes finish the whole scanning process, because the rouge application will block the scanning. After you have cleaned the first detected infection, run again the a full Malwarebytes scan, and it should finish the whole scan without any problems. You would be surprise as to how many infections you just acquired. After this process, install Avast! free for real-time protection, since the free Malwarebytes app doesn't provide real-time protection, unless you pay for it.
