Cross Trainer Tips

I use the cross trainer at my local gym. I started off only being able to manage about 5-10 minutes - but now a few weeks on I am going for about 1 hour on resitance 8/9 (out of 25) on a random cycle.
I feel that I can see the benefits of this already - my stamina has obviously increased and this combind with other excerices I am doing has certainly started changing my body shape.
The reason for starting this discussion is that I am wondering if I am doing this right - I am increasing the speed and resistance levels as I get stronger but does anyone out there have any tips about how I can increase and maximise the effectiveness of using this piece of equipment?
