'I was once a Millionaire!'

Honestly speaking I never had so much of cash to the tune of millions at any one time but just last week I had so much of cash in my bag when I boarded a plane for a vacation in a neighboring country Indonesia. A day before I departed for Lake Toba in Indonesia I changed my Malaysian currency to the Indonesian Rupiah. I was grinning from end to end all the way to Indonesia as I was undeniably an instant millionaire! Even before the plane landed on the Indonesian soil I was already dreaming of what to buy and where to go with my 5 days of vacation on the Island of Somesir and lake Toba. Two of my girlfriends who tagged along with me were also 'loaded' with cash and as my friends are seasoned travelers to countries where currencies are weaker than ours, they knew well how the locals transact their businesses using big denominations to price their goods. Just imagine a cup of coffee cost about twenty five thousand rupiah! My friends were laughing when they saw me taking out cash and scrutinizing the zeros on the printed notes when paying for goods I purchased. I was unfamiliar with the notes and sometimes I've to display the notes for the cashier to pick the right amount. Probably without realizing I might have even overpaid some of the sellers who took advantage of my naiveness. It didn't take long for the millions I had when I first arrived to dwindle away since most of the prices are priced in thousands and on the last day of my stay there I was almost reduced to a pauper with no cash in hand but I tipped the airport scale with my treasured hunts in the craft shops where they are famous for their fine artistic crafting talents. The only regret was I did not do my homework before I travel to that place. No amount of money can compensate for a well taken holidays. Most people say they can do a year's work in eleven months, but probably could not do it in twelve. The bow that is always bent loses its strength.

It sounds like you really enjoyed your vacation in Indonesia. I went to Sumatra when I was 21 years old as part of my trip around the world. I visited Lake Toba there and stayed in a traditional house with a very steep roof. Exchange rates can be really funny especially in Indonesia when you became a millionaire after exchanging some currently. I found that in Italy when they had the lire and in Turkey years later. For me too traveling to one or more foreign country is essential for my well being. My favorite trip happened five years ago. It was to Mexico, Belize and Guatemala.

Yes maximax, you should make a return visit now that they have upgraded the place, turning the place into a paradise. We stayed in HORAS homestay which is run by a Dutchman married to a local. The traditional roofs that they have is indeed unique. If you happen to be going to Sumatra anytime in future, you are most welcome to visit my country. It is not too far away from there.

The feel of being a millionaire was great. Now that am back in my own turf, I feel that I have fallen from grace when I am now left with few notes and a bulk of coins in my purse. How sad!

I see you are from the Philippines and our currency is higher than the Pesos. So you must have exchanged a lot of your currency to be a millionaire in my country.

@besthope44, might never live a life of a millionaire but the only trick to feel how it is to be a millionaire, is to visit countries where we can exchange more money with our currency. I am so confused when everything cost hundreds. When I gave 5,000 rupiah to a guy who insist in carrying my shopping bag, he looked at me as if his eyes was going to pop out. He uttered something which I couldn't understand and quickly left the place in our chartered car.

Most likely the next destination will be in the Philippines. I've already been to your country twice but this time it will only be in Clark as someone is organizing a baking class tour and apparently the baking school is in Clark. Which part of Philippine are you from?

when will that baking class tour be zandi? what a pity, we are in cebu and clark is far from here. we need to take a one hour plane and about two hours from manila airport to clark. but wait, i heard there is available flight direct cebu to clark but i am not sure about that.

I was worth a millon once. It was the year I got four tax bills instead of three, all of a sudden I noticed a hugh increase in the taxes we owed. Then I read the value amount on the bills and saw our property was worth over a million dollars. What a shock and how could I pay that hugh bill. Common sense prevailed and I read the bills again and realized that I had been sent one bill to many. For all the panic that few mins. caused me you can keep your million dollars. Now I read the bills first before I look at the amount owed. Lesson learned.

It is different case in my country, real estate is booming here. Prices of properties have seen a sharp increased in the past two years. Investing in real estate in my country is good prospect.

It is a good feeling knowing that you are worth a million with all the accumulated fixed assets in your name. Since cash is a liquid asset, one can never call herself a millionaire for that matter.
@savypat (20216)

24 Aug 11
well this asset was real estate and the next year it had lost 1/3rd of it value, the yar after that another 1/3rd. Not exactly what I would call a fixed asset. On top of that the taxes reamined the same all three years. That;s how the American real estate market has been.

Hello my friend zandi458 Ji, WEll my dear Zandiji, we had been to USA once for some job as my son called us for help and we never think to travel abroad for jolly good time, however, as and when myu choice is asked, I would prefer to Visit Singapore and then your country Malaysia. I heard both are contrary and similar in beuty by nature. Also when I went to US, I wa sstrictly advised by my friends not to convert our currency with US $. Think taht it is One INR is equal to One US $. But on eshouyld always plan his her stay and enjoy freely. You are a lucky Lady spending your quality time abroad. Thanks. May God bless You and have a great time.

Hi may, if I visit the US I will be a poor tourist as they have strong currency against ours. But I love to make it there one day. My SIL is married to an American and she has invited me to make a visit there. I love traveling and since we have an economy airline that charges cheap fares to any of their destinations around the world, traveling is affordable now.

Probably a stupid question, but do they use coins or only paper money?

Since the cost of metal is more than the value of the coins, the government must have thought of doing away with using metal in their coins.

At first I was also wondering whether they have coins. They do have and the face value is 500. The coins are very light and are made of plastic, similar to those used in the game shops.

Hi Rosa, I went to Medan, Sumatra, lake Toba another part of Indonesia. I was quite surprise that Medan is quite near to my country and it only took 50 minutes traveling by plane to reach there. No I have not been to places like Jakarta or Bali yet but these places are in my list of places I wish to visit in future. My millions left me as fast as I got them. Next trip to Indonesia will see me upgraded to a million Rupiah woman again.

Glad u had a good time & was a millioaire for a little whilw. I would thank it dangerous to be carrying that much cash. I'm surprised hoodlums there aren't looking for people coming in to their country. Maybe they don't have hoodlums there like they do everywhere else.

The place that I went recently is quite peaceful. Looking at the many churches in many parts of the country I assume most of the locals are pious christians who are peace loving people compared to the other parts of the nation.

Hi Zandi, good to hear you are becoming a millionaire when you go vacation recently. Hope you really enjoyed your vacation in Indonesia. I almost go to Indonesia for vacation last year but cancelled it due to haze problem. How's the weather at that area, when you go vacation at that time? Hope it is fine now. Wow, it seems very expensive to have a cup of coffee in Indonesia. If converted to Malaysia ringgit, it will cost approximately how much? It really shock me, if i need to pay that much for a cup of coffee in our area here, too...
