How many Horse lovers are on My Lot?

I had to ask this? For the past 12 months my daughter has owned horses. She is 18, and has ridden horses for many years. She saved up a lot of money to buy her first horse. He was a problem. The person selling him did not let us know he was a bolter. This horse was a thoroughbred ( ex race horse). My daughter tried so hard with him. In many ways he was good, quite affectionate. After he was kicked out of riding lessons due to bad behaviour, she decided to give him away. She had originally paid over $1000 for this horse, but only wanted to give him away to a person who could control him, and would not send him to the doggers. Before she gave away this horse, my daughter bought a second horse, an Australian stock horse, with a lot of Arab in him. He is gorgoues. I have grown to really love horses, as I have spent alot of time feeding, and cleaning up pooos, etc. I can groom horses now, lead them, put a halter on, etc. Now my daughter has ordered a yearling, a Cleveland Bay. It hasn't been born yet, but is due in a week or so. It will cost about $6000. She has to save up all this herself. But I am excited. Tell me all about horses you have owned, or ridden, or just seen and loved. I love reading about horses.

It's so funny you say this! I have no experience riding horses but every since I was a little kid I always wanted to ride a horse and even own a horse. I remember episodes of TV show's with horses like Full House that I would watch, and I would always feel a strong desire to have a horse and learn how to ride and everything. I never discussed this with my parents, I'm 19 now, and just a week ago me and my parents were talking about going horseback riding together. Me and my dad were in New York visiting my grandmother and we saw a man riding a horse when we were driving, he was down by the beach area. It reminded me of how much I want to experience this. Now I'm fantasizing about having one lol. My parents were saying how expensive it is to own one, I wasn't surprised by your pirces, I'm glad she saved up that much for something she loves. Wow, 2 horses at 18. When did she start riding? and I was also wondering where you keep this horse?

Why don't you try riding a horse then? Go to an experienced person who will lead the horse and make you feel comfortable. I think my daughter started riding at about age 10. We had lessons fortnightly as they are very expensive. She keeps her horse at an agistment place. This is a 30 acre property with lots of trees and paddocks. He has his own big yard, but is let out in the big paddock a few times each week. It is a beautiful place. My daughter goes there every day to feed her horse and clean up the ..... I used to 5 times each week to help, especially when she had two horses, but as I work full time now, I can only visit on the weekends. The prpoerty is only 6 minute drive from us.

that sounds great, I'm glad you guys have a love that you can share. I am planning on riding a horse. Me and my parents agreed that we would wait until fall for the weather to change and the leaves to fall and we would make it a family thing we can do together, not that we don't have enough of those lol. That really sounds wonderful, I hope me and my parents love it as much as you two do.

Wow! You bought a horse that threw you?? You mst love a challenge. Arabs are wonderful horses, and crossed with a quarter horse would be a grat combination. Bucking is not my favourit activity in horse, my daughters first horse, a TB woud buck. Just as well you were wearing ahelmet, otherwise your concussion would have been much worse. Its great that you love your horse.

I've always loved horses but I've not ever had a lot to do with them. We went riding a couple of times when we were kids on holidays. I've been thrown off a pony when I was a bit older and I was winded for the first time in my life, thought I was dying but I still love horses. My dad's friend kept horses on the property but they were not used to having someone pet them so they were hard to get close to. You can maybe explain something to me...I thought a yearling was a year old horse, so how can your daughter be buying an unborn year old horse? I'm sure there is a simple explanation and I will have learned my fact of the day.

I should have explained it properly. My daughter put in an order for a hprse that is not even born yet. The mare is pregnant and due any day now and my daughter is very excited. She can't collect the "yearling" until it has stopped feeding from its Mother. So it won't really be one year by then, probably only about 6 months.

I like horses but have never owned any. Our neighbor had three of them we used to take care of and feed though.

That is good that you had experience with horses then. You don't have to own one to appreciate them.

My name in the real world is Phillip, which means lover of horses, and I do. I only ever owned one, when I was quite young, but it bit my small brother who used to tease it because he was jealous, so my parents sold it. I never did get another, but my love for horses developed into a love for race horses. Even the low-grade country performers are lovely to watch, but the thrill of seeing an out and out champion racehorse is unique. We currently have the highest rated horse in the thoroughbred world in Australia, a magnificent mare called Black Caviar, who so far has never been beaten (13/13 and $3.2 million winnings). I have seen grown men cry (myself among them) at the sight of one of these magnificent creatures sailing past a winning post, ears pricked, lengths ahead of the rest. We had one brilliant horse a few years back, Gunsynd, who used to turn his head to look at the crowds (and cameras) as he sailed past the post, too consistently and deliberately to be anything but pride in his own performance. Oh to have a spare million dollars lol. Lash

My husband and I are currently looking for property. Once we find some I hope to adopt an abused/abandoned draft horse. I love their ethereal beauty and strength. I would love to have a team for an old fashioned wagon. My brother also had a problem horse. My Aunt who is a very Upity woman recommended this gated horse (I forget the breed) who was completely uncontrollable. All she saw were dollar signs and not what would be best for my brother an inexperienced horseman. He sold his horse and vows not to have another, I am so glad that wasn't your daughter's response. What a responsible and inspiring daughter you have!

I have not had any direct contact with horses in many years. My daughter, while in college took a job at the horse ranch at a church camp from our denomination. We live in Kansas, but she flew to the state of Washington. In addition to learning about caring for horses and helping campers with that she was a camp counselor. It was a wonderful summer job for her.

There are anumber of "horse camps" here too, where teenagers work with horses. also we have riding for the disabled, quite a big organisation. Normally I wouldn't have had any contact with horse s if it wasn't for Biancas love of them. I had nothing to do with horses as achild.

I used to own a horse but at 31 I had to put him down to health problems. That was two years ago. I still help out at the stable where I had boarded my horse. I want to own a horse again but I can't afford one at this time! i still can't believe I was able to afford Major as long as I did! Since then I continue to pay off his vet bill and other bills so in time I can afford another horse! That will take a few years yet! Anyway that is my horse story.

Hi jenny. Nice to hear that your daughter has an interest on horse riding and already has owned one. I am also a horse lover and know to ride ( i think we discussed in this issue year ago and posted a pic of camel riding ). but i have not owned a horse because in my locality owning a horse is almost rare and cant found to adopt. Have a nice time.

I do remember you sending that lovely photo of you riding a camel, which I think would be more difficult than riding a horse! Yes, my daughter loves horses nad is a very good rider. At her first competition she won Reserve champion.

hi jenny, i have rode a horse only twice, when i was out in the mountains and i had a little sprain. but there was someone leading the horse. i was just there sitting on its back. i guess horses are magnificent animals. they carry their bodies so gracefully and when they start galloping, i love to see the strides especially when i am far away looking at it. ann

When I was a child I wanted a horse, but we didn't have anywhere to keep it. A friend of mine had horses and every chance I got I would ride them. Also every time we went on vacation, it was usually somewhere with horses. The last time I rode was probably about 5 years ago, and I had difficulty swinging my legs up to get on & off. I am in worse shape now, so I am sure I couldn't get on or off. I still like to look at them though. They are such beautiful animals. It is unusual for a young girl to save that much to buy a horse! She must be very responsible and want one very badly.

That is the thing about wanting to own a horse. You need at least 1.5 acres for them, and agistment is very expensive. Yes, Bianca is very responsible and a very hard worker and that is how is she is saving towards buying an expensive yearling. She got me to sit on her horses back and it wasn't easy fo rme. I had to use a large stump to climb on to get my legs over!

I was a lucky young lady and able to ride quite often since I was 8. By the time I was 18 I was training quarter horses. These days there isn't a lot of opportunity to make money from horses. All they do is eat money. It's an expensive hobby. The one piece of good I got from all that is the experience to ride just about any horse I choose when I'm out of the country. My husband has become a very good rider as well so we can ride together in foreign land. My favorite horse when I was a kid was a mix; half Arabian, half quarter horse. Lady was a playful Arabian and a hard working quarter horse. I miss her.

I grew up around horses at my uncle's. He first started buying them. At age 12 I started training them to riding standards, then he would sell them. By the time I was 16 he bought a beautiful half Quarter horse, half Arabian mare! My uncle rarely spoke to me but one day he said, "You and THAT horse have a special bond". He never sold it. Lady was five years old and already retired from the rodeo circuit. It didn't take a genius to figure out why! She was very talented and responded well but, she took the bit in her teeth and refused to stop until the very last second! Scary! So I took the bit away. She didn't know what to do with that information! I rode her with a bit-less bridal forever. People didn't know what to do with that information! She resented the bit! I think she would have loved to ditch the saddle as well but when you're working cattle you need it. She looked like an Arabian and worked like a quarter horse. She looked beautiful and responded to the slightest suggestion, turning on a dime, never knocking over a barrel (really!) and had lightening speed. I helped the local neighbors handle their stock and she and I achieved greatness, winning all kinds of awards. I'll never forget the adrenalin I felt just before mounting her before the sun was even up. Everyone was still asleep in the house. It was just me, her and the summer morning. Ah, how I'd love to time travel!
