Yes folks, this horrific incident happened in my city,Mumbai, just a couple of days back.A couple had hired a 14 year old girl from another city, as a nanny to look after their 18 month baby boy as well as do domestic chores in the house. The girl had been appointed just a week ago.Apparently the girl broke some plates for which the mistress of the house scolded her. This upset the girl but she did not say anything. She quietly took the baby with her to the balcony and threw him down on the ground. Some children who were playing down noticed the fallen child and quickly informed its mother who rushed down along with the neighbours and took the baby to the hospital. Miraculously apart from a few bruises nothing else happened to the child who is now recuperating in the hospital. The maid was handed over to the police where she was placed under arrest. As she is a minor she will be tried in a juvenile court. The baby has had a second life but it could have been worse. There are numerous incidents where crimes are being commited out of rage, jealousy, fights, domestic quarrels etc. Has anything like this happened in your city?

So you see, we should be careful in admonishing our helpers. They are humans too and have feelings , so we should be careful to do the admonishment in a manner that it won't hurt so much. A lot of massacres happened here in the Philippines too, because some boy helpers or maids couldn't stand anymore, the maltreatment they get from their employer. Sometimes, it is also our own doing when things like this happens to us.

I agree with you.People have become very sensitive nowadays because of the tension filled lives they lead and such things happen.Thanks.

I would say, the maid must be younger or a school girl. Child labour also should be avoided, because they are not mentally matured. And at same, treating the fellow human as slaves is also sad.

Maids or helpers are humans and have feelings too. If we speak to them in a demeaning manner, it would really carve a hurt in their hearts . Their dignity will be trampled to the lowest degree that they would just keep it to themselves and just explode when they already have too much. That's what's scary, when that happens.

This is really shocking and same time very sensible. Very sorry for the baby and its cruel act of the maid. But since you mentioned she is minor, she must be a immatured girl. Next the owner treating the small labour so harsh is really bad. if she is not happy with work, she can take her out of job. Emotional acts has finally hurted the little baby. Though I haven't heard of such things..but its painful that people loses their humanity.

Yesterdays newspaper said that the maid was 13 yrs and below the recommended age limit of 14.She was sent to a juvenile home where she will be given counselling and then set free and sent to her home. Meanwhile the couple who hired her were arrested by the police for child labour but were given bail and allowed to go home. The baby is now recovering in the hospital and will be discharged in a few days.

Honestly its right decision, child labour should be completely eradicated and education should be made free for all children. And treating others as slaves even our maids or people working below us has to be treated considering humanity. Hope none of these shocking incidents should happen here after!

When I read your title, I thought it was a mother who did this! Now I see that sadly the parents picked the wrong nanny! I am not blaming them. They did their best. I blame the system. There Has to be a agency for loving parents to go where they can get older, more mentally secure nannies! And sadly yes horrific things happen to babies here in the States all the time. but most of the time , it is the parents or a step parent. Let's face it , there are some people who like to hurt kids. They didn't have the guts to say , I don't like kids . I don't want them around me . Or they say they do love kids but just treat them badly. It is so sad!

Wow!! As I write this I Know there are 13 year olds babysitting their younger siblings here in the States. Typically, or at least back in the day, a couple would hire a 16 teen old to babysit their child for a few hours as the couple went out to dinner. But to be a nanny? A full time nanny? I think here she has to be at least 18! Those poor parents! I'm glad the baby will be ok.

I never heard of anything like this except in an emergency situation where a baby had to be lowered from the balcony. I hope this young girl gets the help she needs. Young people today are very selfish and self serving. They are brought up spoiled and only thinking of themselves.

dear anna, This is really shocking. But why it is allowed to hire a nanny as tender age of 14? So, it is allowed in your place to have minor/s as househelp? We cannot blame the girl for behaving such, she's still a minor and should be enjoying childhood, playing and must be at school. I understand it's poverty that driven this poor girl to work at an early age. Employers should/ must be considerate as well- should know how to treat their househelp- as human- not merely laborers or slaves. The baby is so lucky, and God saved the innocent baby as well as the poor girl. have a good day dear brother jaiho®

Unfortunately there are far too many cases of child abuse in our country. I've never heard of a situation where a babysitter has just dropped a baby like that because someone had upset them. While I do understand that the girl is a minor, I really think that she should be tried as an adult because that is the kind of case that really could irrepairably damage the lives of many people and to not seem to have any remorse makes things worse.

What a horrific event! Miracle that baby survived!! But one cannot blame the nanny completely after all she is only a teenager full of changing hormones and might be full of vengeance as she had to be away from her family and city for the job. Just another reason why one should opt for more mature and capable domestic help. I have never heard or seen such bizarre incident in my city but have seen many on television...

Hi Veejay19, Wow; I am sorry to hear this, thank God the baby was not killed. These days you have to be very careful to who you let take care of your child. And to take out anger on an innocent baby is just cruel.

That's terrible. Sadly, there have been stories here about babysitters that have mistreated children. There are people that set up cameras in their homes to make sure their children are not being abused. I hate that there is so much crime in the world. It is shocking sometimes what people do.

Oh my this is terrible to hear. I don't think I have heard of something like this around here, but have heard of accidental situations. Sadly the 14 year old was way too young and immature to be given the responsibility of watching over such a young child. Though there are some mature 14 year olds clearly not in this case. Wow I am happy though the child did not get severly hurt and or die, it is like a miracle to only have obtained bruising, though thankful nothing more.

That sound horrible. Poor little baby. Lucky that nothing happened to the baby. How could she do. There are always a lot of things happening in all places. And these are different accidents and incidents. Some are really so strange that you can't even believe how and why things like these happens. Perhaps there are just really strange people lurking around and just waiting for the chance to go insane. Lucky that the house isn't that high that the baby is okay.

Hello veejay, This has not happened in my city but I've heard similar stories like this. I don't understand why they hired a 14 yr old to look over an 18 month yr old baby shes a baby herself, these days parents will desperately hire anyone to watch there children, thank god nothing serious happened to the baby I would advise parents to hire much older mature people.

I had read about this in yesterdays paper. It is indeed shocking. Incidents like these makes us distrust maid servants and nannies. In a city where both the parents work life for the kids is becoming dangerous. Both at home, at school, at play and on the way to school.

This is what modern life is all about. Both parents working and no time to look after the children. In this case the mother was a housewife but the trend today is to hire a nanny and go about doing otherthings like kitty parties, movies with friends and doing everything except parenting. The baby needs a mothers love at this stage and should not be given under care of nannies who have no feelings for their wards. For them its just a job.

Thank god the baby is okay. I would personally never hire a helper to look after my child. If i found it difficult i would request someone i knew properly like my mother or inlaw or even a helper whom somebody knows properly and trusts to look after my baby. You have to be so careful today with hired helpers.

Where I live I can think of two local incidents like this - only without happy endings. A man wanted to get back at his wife who had divorced him so he drowned their two year song in a river...in winter. Then there was another woman whose did not like how her baby cried in the night (even though that is normal!). She would just let it cry and cry until one night she came in there and slapped the child on the head hard enough to kill it. I didn't know either child personally but my eyes always get moist when I think about those two incidents. Thankfully in sixteen years living here that is all that has happened.

Oh, my God! That is such a very irresponsible action. This is the reason why I don't want to entrust to someone my children (if ever I will get married and have a child in the future). Hmmmmm.. That nanny should be given a punishment. Good thing, the baby didn't die. We must be careful on who we trust especially in taking care of our loved ones. We might not know what runs through their minds. They might do something stupid or worse than this.
