This is just my very humble opinion as an ordinary moviegoer but one I'm entitled to nonetheless.
I think and strongly suspect Peter Jackson's LOTR is the greatest film so far in the movie industry's history.
I'd like to see anyone try to top LOTR. Moviegoers win big time.
There are two prequels in the works: The Hobbit 1 (An Unexpected Journey 2012) and The Hobbit 2 (There And Back Again 2013).
These will be hard pressed to measure up to the LOTR trilogy but I am ready to be considerate of Mr. Peter Jackson's latest offerings because he gave us LOTR.
Here's to hoping me, the folks, and everyone else for that matter are still around for the 2013 movie;-)

I had not heard about these movies until I read this, but now I am looking forward to seeing them. I suspect (and hope) that they will be every bit as good as the last ones. I did a search on them, and they are keeping many of the same characters/actors as in the last movies, which is great for a few reasons. First, changing characters would not fit with the books. Second, I think that all the actors did an excellent job, so it would not be a good move to change them. Third, it gives a continuity to the movie sequence. Fourth, I really dislike it when movies that have been really good decide to do a sequel and then change characters or actors, because many times they are not as good as the originals.

LOL! No, I really had not heard anything about it or if I did I do not remember. What can I say ... I guess that I live under a rock. I am glad that I heard about it, though, because now I can look forward to them. I suspect that when they get a little closer to their projected release date, then they will do more promoting and I would have heard about them then.

I don't think it's the greatest film ever but it IS very good. There have been better movies with more to say, more originality, better (original) stories, etc.
Like you, I'm looking forward to The Hobbit. The book was extremely enjoyable (much more than the long, drawn-out LOTR in my opinion), so hopefully the film(s) will be the same.

I love LOTR, the books and movies. I really wanted to go to New Zealand just to see the places on where they shot some of the scenes in the film. I'm looking forward to see the new film "The Hobbit". I think this will be better if not equally great with the trilogy.
