i come from the Philippines; a tropical country. its very common to find ants ( black ants and red ants) in the house. on the dinner table, on the kitchen counter, on the bed, everywhere where there is food available. i've tried using an insect spray to keep them away but they always comeback after only a couple of days. how do you keep them from crawling back inside the house?

Well, I've read many articles on remedies for such problems as ants. But as of now, I can recall only one, which I NOT tried actually. Maybe you can try and let me know if it works. Just powder the skin of Orange fruit and use it where the ants are. Of course, it's not the permanent / preventive solution that you are looking for. It's more of a cure than a prevention. And it would be temporary. But I'm just curious to know if it works, as it would be a NATURAL remedy. There must be many more natural methods to get rid of ants. Let's explore:) Cheers! my "anty" aunty :P

this is the first time i've heard of using orange peel as an ant repellant. what i've found to be an effective natural ant repellant is salt. simply sprinkle a lot of salt on their anthill and after several days the ants will disappear.

yes that is true that you can see ants anywhere and everywhere, especially during summer time because that is the time that they need to take food in their house so that when rainy days will come they still have food.just my thought only about ants.

hello asliah! i completely agree with you that ants are everywhere during summertime cause its their time to gather all the food they need for their families before the coming of rain! man and ants can co-exist if only they don't bite... if only they don't contaminate our food...if only they just stay outside the walls of our houses then they could gather all the food they want in peace.

I know the ant powder I mentioned before worked for me, but I wanted to know why they chose my house in the first place. So I did some research online and discovered one reason why ants might pay you a visit inside the house is because ants are also drawn to water. I live the desert. It's dry around my place so the ants might have come inside looking for water. I haven't had to the chance to landscape around my place. I still maintain with the ant repellant powder, but that could be a reason why the ants paided you a visit. Maybe if it's wet and moist outside, they'll stop coming inside. Just a thougt.

yes you're correct, ants like the moist and wet ground and we have lots of that outside our home. we have a large garden beside our house and a colony of ants live there. perhaps the food they find in the garden is not enough for them that is why they go inside the house to look for food there.

If you have a garden, then a traditional ant killer with hurt your garden. They do have natural, non-poisonous bug repellants out there. Perhaps you can look into something like that where you can spread it in your garden.

At a former house it was less a problem. I found them come in because of the food so I had to close that better and put somewhere else and used a spray as well. In my house in Hungary I found out they were not really comming from outside but more living in the walls and under the kitchen (sink etc). So I took the time to close many holes. In the edges of the rooms etc and that ended it alot. I put boxes with ant killer (kind of food in it they take to their nest) everywhere and was using the vacuum cleaner for days (each day about the same time they all showed up I hope I killed the queen also). This year I had way less trouble (perhaps because of the weather?) but I do use the insect spray too. Spraying everwhere I can and also using a special powder if I leave the house in the edges where my kids won't come. Also outside (or if I see them pass by) I put a box with poisoned "food" and hope it will work. I don't have the illusion I will ever get rid of all of them since I am not living in an appartment in the city so I can only fight them and hope they get less instead of more.

Hey! I know about the chalks used to kill cockroaches and ants hehe:) but it spoils the look of your floor and walls. So, You can use it only at places like corners and the inside of house.

hello WakeUpKitty!!! have you tried using the chalk that kills ants? its also very effective. my sister who had a problem with ants in her house had been using this to keep away the ants especially on her bed. she gave a sample and i tried it and it worked! its very simple to use its just like using an ordinary chalk. i just scribbled some lines on the wall near by bed and it killed the ants!

hello joyalaugustine!!! have you tried spraying them with corrosive? i have tried spraying them with a strong corrosive or a "cleaner" and its very effective. now the ants are now living peacefully just outside our house particularly in the garden.

If you can find where they are coming in then peppermint oil is a good repellant. Also, they leave a train for other ants to follow and that can be destroyed just with a little boiling water. Both of these work but you do have to keep doing it because ants are very curious and clever and will always explore.

I have the same problems sometimes. I live in the high desert and during the extremely hot summers, ants like to pay me a visit looking for water. I found the best way to stop them from coming inside is from the outside. Don't even let them get near the house. I had great success with powdered or crystal ant repellant. It comes in a container with a sifter on the lid and I sprinkle it around the entire perimeter of my house, extending out about a foot. I also sprinkle it up the wall a bit, getting the powder in all the nooks and crannys. Haven't had an ant visitation in years. But remember, even in powder form, ant repellant is still poisonous. I wouldn't use it around any plants you intend on keeping or around pets. It can be found at Walmart or any home improvement store. Hope this works for you.

thank you very much for your advice but i'm afraid i cant use powdered ant repellants because my sisters two pet dogs freely roam around our compound. it would certainly kill them.

Have you tried Instant grits? (not real ones, it must be instant) Basically they take the grits back to their homes and once they eat them and have water the grits expand and kill the entire colony. I use them like crazy. Keep them dry and replace them often.

I also experience that. There is lot of ants here in our house and even i use lot of insect spray just to shuuw them away they and kill some of them they keep of coming back. I also experience when i'm sleeping, they bite me and they disturb my sleep. My cousin also experience to get bite of ants inside his ears. Really hurts,so we don't like ants. When i put down the food in a short time, maybe three to five minutes, the ants is attacking our foods.
