If the cat is the boss and the dog knows it, they will be friends. Don't worry if the cat is mean to the dog at first. He is just teaching the puppy his place in the family. Humans and cats must always be the boss of dogs. Dogs don't mind being on the bottom. They just want to know their place in the family.

i guess it really depends on the personality of the dogs, we used to have dogs taht are really friendly with cats, now we have 3 dogs, the other 1 is really friendly with stray cats but the other two will really kill the poor cats if they catch it.

Yes, it also depends on the personality and breed of the dog. Our neighbor's dog practically kills the cats that ever comes near him, including his master's cat.
I saved three kittens out of the streets just to meet their demise. I was about to feed them dinner when the neighbors dog escaped and chased the kittens. The dog is too big and too fierce that I couldn't stop him. I just watched in horror as he killed the kittens without mercy.
Since then, I don't ever let my cats out of the house anymore. I don't even allow them out in the garden, although, sometimes they are able to get out when I'm not around.

Maybe your cat feels threatened. It would rather be the only animal in the house, and feels scared, or abandoned. I have heard cases where people have to get rid of another animal because they do not get along, and usually it is from the animal that was there first.

Yes, they could be good friends. I have seen a lot of pictures and videos on Youtube where the cat and god don't fight each other and they are playing together. I think if they both grew up together, they could be close.

I have had cats and specially our Bull Terrier got along very well with the mother cat. They were great friends and in fact whenever it was time for her to litter she would want our dog to be there with her. Here in this picture you find both of them sharing some food.

Please give some time to your cat. She/He will soon start liking the puppy. You need to monitor as the cat may scratch your puppy.

i think if both of them are in good situation and are not hungry it can be possible, one of my friend has cat and dog both in his home, and there is no problem between them,i saw them sleeping together once;)
it really depends on the situation i think, not all cats and dogs must be enemies.
happy mylotting

It helps if the cat or the dog is used to the other animal already.
When we got Zoe, we were told she was cat friendly (a critical issue in her adoption.) And she LOVES cats, she LOVES kittens even more! When we bring a kitten in, they get to know dogs from a dog who loves them or one who is at least wary of them (my dog, Cujo.)
The actual hardest ones are bringing in adult cats who don't like dogs, they never really warm up to them, but they do finally get over hating them.
Your best bet is to make sure that the puppy doesn't wear out his welcome with the cat, since the cat probably is a few years older and would probably prefer to sleep than play with a hyper puppy...

In my opinion, cats and dogs can be good friends as time goes on so long as they have enough time to stay with each other. Such cases have been seen for many times when they are put together. It is just a matter of time. Have a good day, zhouxi.

It is my experience that a cat and a dog can become friends. We had our cat before we got our dog, and in the beginning they definately weren't friends. If the dog got close to the cat she tried to hit him, and she managed to scare the dog. After a while our dog started chasing the cat around in the house and the dog kept on barking at her. My husband and I looked at them, and we didn't think that they would ever become friends, but we were wrong. Today they get along just fine and they even sleep on the same blanket sometimes.

In the cat's eyes, the puppy is an intruder. Clearly the cat does not know better and is acting on instinct. Cats can get jealous too, so it's best to share equal treatment with them if possible.
Several years ago my dog was tolerant of cats. I won't say he flat out loved them, but he didn't mind them. I had this cat who was calm and curious. Always wanting to explore and what not.
We lived in a country like setting with dirt roads. Houses were a few paces apart, and our property at the time was separated only by some trees. The yards were enormous too, front and back.
One day, I was outside in the front yard with my dog and my cat was out in the yard exploring. Before I even knew it, the next door neighbor's dog came out of its yard and into ours and went after my cat. I screamed my cat's name, but my dog beat me to it. He went after the dog, protecting the cat.
So as you can see, when animals live together chances are after awhile they'll learn to tolerate one another. They'll even learn to love one another. Just give them both some time. It may take a couple of months, but your cat will learn to tolerate the puppy. He might even teach your puppy a few things.

I agree it is best to have a cat and dog grow up together. That worked out the best for me. However, my friend had 2 older cats and then 2 dogs were brought in. One of the dogs constantly chased the cats while the other just ignored them.
I think if you just let them get used to each other it could work out. There is a possibility it won't, but if they could at least tolerate each other that would be an improvement. Thing is the puppy will always want to play with the cat which might not go over well. Good luck, I wish you all the best.

Absolutely, my cat and dogs get along great. He sleeps with the dogs, bathes them and they do the same. They are excited when he comes inside the house and kiss on him the way the should, he is family. I have Boxer, Lab, and small runt and they all get along. The cat will get adjusted to the dog, but it may take a while. If the cat has been the only child for a while then it will be spoiled. Just show it some extra attention and try to incorporate the two together.

I have a dog and cat, although we got them the opposite way to you, we had the dog first - who is a terrier (or terror!)for three years, then we got a kitten. The dog is female, and the kitten was male. At first they used to playfight on the floor like two dogs, the dog wanted to be best buddies with the new cat but the cat was having none of it and kept scratching her. Our dog was so depressed for a while but a year later they both get on fine. They have the odd fight, but what brother and sister dosnt? haha They will get used to eachother :)

How old is your cat? If your cat has been living with you for a long time, she may find it hard to settle down with another pet in the house, especially a dog.
On the other hand, I have known cats and dogs to be great friends, even to cuddle up together.
Many years ago, I had a dog and two ctas, and they would all sleep together.
Just spend time with your cat to help her adjust.
