If you are from UK or even if you are not but do you know the difference? They call it UK normally or Britain but when in I see in sports they represent England. Then I think that may be at present officially the Britain or UK is England? but again what makes me confused when I come to know Scotland people also call that they are from UK and Scotland represent its separate team in sports.
One more thing I want to know the famous police named as 'Scotland yard'is just a special branch of England Police department and it has nothing to do with scotland or scotland is a part of England?Anyone who knows all the history, geography of that region please shed some light on it.

oh no, blueguy, you make us in the UK sound so messed up when you explain it like that!
perhaps thats the answer, we are just so messed up we understand all this, and then get unreasonnably offended when others done.
ok, lets try and explain.
i think UK is the official title, whereas great britain is more a geographical term. the UK would be used to describe all parts of the uk, which is england, scotland, wales and nothern ireland, i would never use the term britain to describe northern ireland. as the people of northern ireland are irish not british, but are part of the UK.
england, scotland, and wales are all parts of the UK, but they are for many people also racial identities. so someone from scotland says they are scottish, someone from wales, is welsh, and someone from england is english. and we are all british, so we tend to use which ever term suits us at the time.
however to keep those racial identities and get more opportunities to compete, and probably vote too, in sports like football, england and scotland are separate countries. however, if scotland were to be extremely successful in the world cup, for example, then for english people, they would suddenly be representing britain not scotland. so the english could also claim credit. so it is also convenience, when the scots do something good we call them british, when they do something something bad they are scottish.
as for scotland yard being in london, england, thats because we have a habit of calling our streets after geographical locations, and the important buidlings in those streets after them. so scotland yard is in a street in london called scotland yard. confusing i know, but so much of it is about historical solutions that were convenient at the time, but may seem a bit illogical now.

Francesca I had to read twice your detail reply sorry I am thick I think and thank you for making things clear to some extent.what I could get that..
- everyone living in that region is from UK but UK is not one country.
- UK is a group of three or four countries England, scotland, wales and northern ireland.(I am confused with wales as never heard that wales is a country though)
- All UK people are British people.
- Racially there are english, scotish and welsh.but they are all from UK and all are British.
- Scotland yard police is named on a street name in old times which is officially famous world wide now.
Please correct me if I am getting something wrong.
Thanks.

I was born in the United Kingdom which is the UK for short. I still live there now. I reside in the part which is called England. In my university days I lived and studied in Wales. I have visited Scotland once to the city of Edinburgh.
The United Kingdom: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
Britain: England, Wales and Scotland
England: Just the part of the UK where I live
The Republic of Ireland: is southern Ireland and has nothing to do with Northern Ireland
Yes, Scotland Yard is indeed a special branch of the police in England. One of my school friends had the surname "England". I met twin girls called "India" and "China". I can imagine problems on their future travels in Asia.
When I was at university in Wales. Students from Northern Ireland got a grant. The students from the Republic of Ireland got into debt because they couldn't get a grant. We are all now part of the European Community.

I am ENGLISH, not British or UKish! It's a bone of contention for many, as the United Kingdom bungs together all the parts (Scotland, Wales, England etc)which come under one monarch.
Up till King James the whatever, Scotland was a separate country. They're still pretty hung up about it now! By the way, any chance you could send Canada back to us?

You sure know a lot about history. You should teach it. That way, you'll make money on something you enjoy doing.
