I saw an article on New York TImes and it really touched my heart. Jon Tumilson, a US Navy who died in Afghanistan owns a dog. The dog was caught on video at the funeral of it's owner. The dog was lying beside the casket and the people who attended the wake are all touched by his loyalty. He does not have that playful him anymore and he just lay there as if he knows that his owner is in the casket and has left him for good.
Stephanie La Farge, a psychologists said that the video and the pictures taken are clear evidence that the dog is grieving. She said, most dogs also undergo the grieving process when it loses its master or even a companion dog. Some dogs even go back to the last place where they saw their owners and some even stay beside the grave and never leaves. The dog was named Hawkeye, a labrador retriever.
This was not the first time I have read about a dog's loyalty. There is also one true life based film from Japan called Akita Inu and that too was very touching. The dog kept coming back to the train station where he walks his master every morning and the master arrives at 5 to come home. It was one of the film that made me cry. The dog stayed there for years, coming every 5 in the evening waiting for his master arrive from the train. It was a true story and Japanese even made him a monument at that exact place to remind people of a loyal dog.
My grand mom's dog also did the same, she was always sleeping beside the casket at that time and she stopped eating during the wake as if she is also grieving.
Dogs are loyal friends and it is amazing how they devote themselves to their owners. Our dogs too are very attached to us and I am happy we have dogs.
Have you also witnessed a dog's loyalty?
