Using other cleaning products than laundry detergents

We always seem to run out of laundry detergent. We don't always have the money to buy a new pack of laundry detergent so we will use other cleaning supplies. My mother has used dish detergent, vinegar, and other products. Some times I wish we could afford the more expensive brands because they smell so fresh and clean. When we run out though I am happy that we brought the cheaper brand because then who knows when we would be able to buy a new pack of laundry detergent.
I don't mind using other cleaning products but sometimes I don't like the vinegar. I don't like the smell of it. I am happy that my clothes are clean though so I can't complain but so much.

I use baking soda to stretch my laundry detergent. We bought it in bulk a while ago, and I use just a small amount of laundry detergent and a sprinkle of baking soda. Our clothes come out clean and nice smelling.
I've gotten some good coupons for laundry detergent recently, and I've sent away for samples of things like Woolite. You might be able to get some free samples of laundry detergent.

Borax can be used to make your own soap can it not? I think it's fairly inexpensive as well, and definitely worth picking up. I've never made my own cleaner but I've had to rely on just a little bit of laundry soap and hot water to wash clothes when the washer was broken.

i know it seems the laundry detergent goes very quickly. i have bought a box of boraxo to add to my laundry. it isn't too expensive. this helps with the laundry as the detergent goes so quickly.

Hi, 02bnocn. I have used Dawn dish detergent to wash my clothing too. I would rather use baking soda than vinegar. I think that vinegar will make my clothing smell funny once the clothes have been washed. Sometimes, we may have to use dish detergent, too if we don't have any laundry detergent at home.

I have used dish detergent for my laundry several times. Laundry detergent is rather expensive when you are broke and I normally have plenty of dish detergent so I can spare it for the laundry. I have used vinegar in my laundry before as well. I did not think that it made the clothes smell bad.

Most laundry detergents tell you to use more than you need. If you use about half of what they call for or half of the scoop they give you, your clothes will come just as clean and your detergent will last longer.
You can use borax as a booster and use even less detergent - about a third of the scoop will do it along with a quarter cup of borax, which is cheaper than good detergent.
Cheap detergent has more fillers in it to take up space, and that's what you're paying for so you don't really save anything over washing with less detergent.
Also, you can wash a load now and then in just plain water, since detergent builds up both in your clothes and in the washer.

I never tried that laundry cocktail before... I gotta remember that! For me, it's mostly dish washing soap(whenever I run out of detergent).

I think whatever detergent you use, you should fabric conditioner after every wash. It keeps the clothes look new and soft. Also, it helps drive away bad odor when the sunlight is not around.
