Everyone knows that fast food is not good for our health, yet the profusion of fast food restaurants in many parts of the world is changing our eating habit. Do you find that fast food culture is taking root in your country? Do you find that fast food restaurants like to target children, and make them enjoy eating junk food from young? Has traditional diet disappeared from every day life?

Yes, it has taken root in my country. Practically everywhere you go and in every shopping mall, you will be able to find at least one fast food outlet. I am not sure if fast food restaurants like to target children but I don't think it's surprising. My family prefers homecooked food and in fact, my sis cooks dinner almost everyday. Incidentally, she is a really good cook.:)

Hi Huilichan, if you have noticed that fast food restaurants like to sell toys with every set meal, then you can see how it is targeting at children. They like to promote the restaurant as a place for children to celebrate their birthday too. I think those children who love fast food will continue eating there for the rest of their lives. Granted that traditional food is still very much alive in many Asian countries, I think the future is less certain. After all, many traditional food cannot compete with the ease of food serving and ease of eating fast food. We can sit anywhere, and use our hands to hold the burger while we eat. There is not much messy washing up too.

Hi Huilichan, actually traditional diet refers to both home cooked and outside food that serve in traditional way. For example, most Asian food have more vegetables than meat, and for us, Chinese, probably a few dishes with soup and stir fried vegetables. Fast food usually have more fried meat than vegetables, and have very high sugar content.

Oh ya...it didn't cross my mind. But I don't think it's just the kids who like toys...anyway, that's beside the point. Personally, I like to eat fast food even though I also like homecooked food. Oh ya...sorry, I think I got you wrong. By traditional diet, I don't think you are referring to homecooked food, right?

There's nothing inherently wrong with 'fast food'. I have a salad from a fast food joint every day. It's very healthy.

Hi Andy77e, actually I think the reverse about parents and children are true in real life. What parents eat is up to the children. Most of the times, even what grandparents eat is up to the grandchildren. Many parents are too busy at work, and they are guilty with not spending enough time with their kids. As a result, when their kids want to eat fast food, and choose all the unhealthy choices, the parents just give in and follow suit. Same with grandparents who cannot resist the persistent crying of kids when they want to go and eat ice cream

Hi Andy77e, not many people go to fast food joints to eat salad. Even if they eat salad, they tend to add in too much salad cream, and that turns a healthy food into a high fat food. I think most people tend to eat more French fries, with salt, and drink more soft drinks when they are having a meal in fast food restaurants. The children are definitely not having more salad than fried food. if they get used to fast food diet, it is very hard to get them to change their diet when they are older.

which means people are making a choice to eat something bad, doesn't it? That's not the fault of fast food restaurants. And again, what children eat is up to the parents, not the restaurant. I know many people who ate tons of bad food when they were young, that now eat only health stuff since they got older.

Hi scheng! The fast food culture has already taken roots here. When you say fast food, it's all about fast food restaurants like Mcdonald's, Wendy's and all. Here we have our own fast food restaurant, it's Jollibee. Ever since Mcdo became popular, it has taken over the heart of many people and this was seen by businessmen as a good opportunity to take so they built Jollibee. And that popularized even more the fast food culture here. People always flock there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner because it's fast food. You order and you get it instantly, you can even take it out. During Sundays after mass, children will ask their parents to take them to Jollibee or Mcdo because they want to eat burgers and fries. These have changed the taste preferences of people from local food to foreign food. And it's not very healthy. Although people is now realizing the dangers of always eating this kind of food, a lot of people have become dependent and used to it so it will be hard to change it. I myself, even though I know the high cholesterol it contains, I still crave for fries sometimes because I have been cultured to enjoy this food since I was a kid.

Fast foods here also deliver. There are so many people who order and have it delivered to their homes and offices. But there are also those who do not because of the delivery fees. I think it's really worse in your place. If the fast food is near, we'll just go there and not have the food delivered.

Hi Secretbear, most fast food chain have no delivery charges, but they require a minimum order for delivery. I think that is the problem of having food in abundance so nearby. If you can order home delivery for free, and just order enough for three persons, I think you would not want to cook too.

Hi Secretbear, the situation is even worse in my place here. The fact is that nearly all fast food restaurants offer home delivery or office delivery, and some restaurants open 24 hours a day and seven days a week, including all public holidays. I think traditional food sellers cannot match the resources of these fast food outlets. Even from my house, there are many fast food restaurants within walking distance. However, people still refuse to walk, they prefer to call in and order home delivery.

Yes, i see that happening. Not only fast foods but with packaged foods, etc. So many young people dont know its so easy to make things from scartch. For example; augraten potatoes or scallop potatoes or mashed pottaoes. It take just about the same amout of time as the junk they stuff into boxes. It cost less then the boxed stuff and is way more healthy. Many conditions such as IBS and ADHD are directly related to eating the chemical additives they put in that stuff. Its sad really.

Yes, ive seen the noodles in the asian stores here. I buy the noodle that you cook and you add veggies and meats to it. There are so many kinds there too. I love the udon noodles. And peanut sauce, especially with shrimp.

Hi Jdyrj, yes, that is true, the packaged food is getting very popular here too. I think our country has one of the highest consumption of instant noodles. We have so many types, including those cup and bowl noodle that do not require cooking at all. You just have to put in the seasoning, pour hot water, and then wait for the noodle to soften. The cost is slightly less than a bowl of cooked noodle with fresh ingredients, yet people still prefer to have instant noodle.

Hi Jdyrj, at first we only had the instant noodle that required three minutes of cooking. Later on we have the instant noodle in disposable cup or bowl and do not need cooking. The vegetables are dried ones, and you just add to the noodle before pouring hot water. Many office workers buy a few of these cup noodles, and just pour hot water, and that is their lunch or dinner. They usually do that when it is raining, and they are too lazy to go out for lunch or dinner.

Hi Bellis, with all the lawsuits going on, I think those managements of fast food are finally getting on healthy diet. Just too bad that they are able to sell the junk food to other developing countries, and cause the general obesity level to increase. i think it is still a long way for fast food companies to go healthy. The best selling products, such as French fries, and soft drinks, are not known to be healthy.

Hi Bellis, I think those fast food companies are just making a big show of it for publicity sake. They are profit-minded, but not really concerned about the long term health of the customers. They can tell us that people need to eat a balanced meal, and that they do not think people are eating fast food all the time. They can provide all sorts of statistics to show how good the food is, but the fact is that too many chemicals go into the preparation and preservation of the food. I wonder how long they can keep the bread or how long they have kept the bread. I think even the potato for French fries are made a few months ago, and just kept frozen until use.

Not only that it's taking roots in my country an that it's not healthy, but it's becoming an everyday habit. I see people eating fast food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And here in my country, most of the people preparing the food are really, really not good with the hygiene habits, if you know what I mean.

There are some fast food restaurants that open 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week, including all public holidays here. One of such restaurants is the McDonald near my house, as in just ten minutes' walk away. I think if this trend continues, the government has to hire more doctors, nurses and build more hospital.

It is the hectic lifestyle of the modern family that plays a large part in increase of the fast food consumption as the normal family meal. Usually at least 1 parent is working full-time, the kids are in sports or other extra-curricular activities, and all the rushing around to get here and there leaves little time to cook. Or the parents are just too worn out to cook. I know my family eats more fast food meals than we should - both for health reasons and financial, but it tends to be the fastest and most convenient way to feed everyone before they have to do their next activity. Plus everyone can get what they want and are satisfied.

Hi Tinkerick, yes, it is true that fast food provides more convenient, even though the food is not very healthy. Fast food restaurants are providing home delivery services. That makes it even more accessible to the general busy population. If a person is not feeling well enough to go out or too lazy or too busy to go out, and has nothing to cook, he can just order home delivery. I think the fast food restaurants will remain for a long time, probably after the extinction of traditional diet.

Fastfood lovers - Eating the unhealthy way
People becomes lazy and would not want to prepare foods at home anymore. This is because fast-food chain is proliferating so they could just pick one and they'd eat without much effort. Why would they tire themselves up in preparing at the kitchen? That has been the common reason of many who frequent fast-food. They don't know that their laziness harms their health. They've been addicted to fast-foods that offer junks. As for me I never would allow myself to be part of the fast-food culture. I know how to cook and I know how to spend effort if only for the health of my entire family.

Hi Salonga, I think the worst is that fast food targets children. When kids grow up on a fast food diet, they will continue to eat junk food and hurt their health. Some fast food chains also provide home delivery, and that means people are getting even lazier. They just need to call, and then wait for food.

I think that fast food is making more of an impact in our culture these days, but there are also healthy things as well. In my town, there are several burger bars, but now there are also places that do very nice smoothies and salads which are much healthier than most of the other things that are available in most cities in the modern day. I think that fast food will be more and more common as time goes on, because of the simple fact that most people don't have the time to cook for themselves, but things need to get healthier or people will just become more and more overweight.

Hi GemmaR, I think you forget to mention one very important aspect of a fast food chain. Fast food restaurants provide home delivery service. I do not think those places that serve nice smoothies, salad or other healthy food can compete in this area. I think the home delivery is a factor in making people lazy and overweight. If everyone has to cook at home or eat out, then they would burn more calories than just ordering through phone, and waiting for food to reach their door step.

I do agree with your concern but this is just another way of doing business and fast food is expanding, be it their business or customers. Today, you may see lots of different fast food chain keep on opening. While the oldest one keep on conquering to the nearest possible. Control is name of the game. You always have the options what you prefer to eat. Targeting children is not new to our country, as long we don't let them eat everyday and this will not cause any harm. Otherwise, your country should have banned it... Right?

Hi Hvaniday, it is hard for a country to try to ban fast food restaurants. For one thing, the fast food restaurants hire many part timers, especially the elderly ones and the teenagers. They are helping to create employment, and reduce unemployment. It is good from this point of view. The fast food restaurants here offering free or nearly free home delivery too. When the weather is bad, and people are hungry, they tend to call and wait for dinner to deliver to their door step. I think that is the reason for the fast food restaurants to survive so long, and to gain popularity everyday.

Hi Minniemadz, the selection of healthy food is very limited. Even those bread for the burgers are not that healthy. The drinks are too sweet, and the sauces have high fat content. Obviously the worst are the deep fried food items. I think as time goes on, fast food will become very popular with people in many countries. They do not have to cook and mess up their kitchen.

It's a fact that fast food culture has already taken root in my country for a long time. The chain stores such as McDonald and KFC are quite popular in the group of children and young people. In my vew, there are mainly two reasons. One is that in the modern society the pace of life becomes faster and faster, so young people who go to work are so busy that they have less time to enjoy meals than before. Fast food properly caters for such feed so that it is welcomed by those people. The other reason is that fast food companies have spent a lot of money in researching the flavor of children. They realize that if they could win a potential market if they could catch the appetite of children. Now it seems that to a large extent they succeed in doing it.

Hi Simon, I think even in those areas where the pace of life is not that fast, the fast food culture is very strong too. Many people just do not want to spend so much time in preparing a meal. In order to prepare a meal, we have to spend at least an hour for grocery shopping, then clean and chop the vegetables into small pieces, then cook, after a meal, we still have to wash up. It is very troublesome to cook for just one or two persons. I think it is worthwhile only to cook for a large family. The fact that fast food offer home delivery is another factor to consider.

I would agree that fast food culture has taken root everywhere. I've lived in Asia and it's the same here in North America. I'm just hoping that like some fast food chains, they would soon offer some healthier choices.

Hi Bounce58, I think in addition to the work stress and long working hours in many Asia countries, the people are simply too lazy to cook traditional dinners. Even when the grandparents are at home, they might not like to spend so much time in buying vegetables, and then peel potatoes and cook a healthy meal for just one or two persons. It makes sense to cook when there are five or ten persons eating. It hardly make sense to cook when there are just the old grandma and the young kid at home. It is easier to bring the kid to McDonald, and order a happy meal. I hope the menu in fast food restaurants will change, so that we have more healthy food.

Hi Judy, if you bring your cousin to cities in Asia, you will notice the same trend of fast food restaurants. I can walk to a few fast food restaurants from my house. Before, when i was very busy and unable to cook, i am also fond of fast food. I remembered that at that time, i usually will go and order some burgers, fried chicken and potato chips for our dinner. After eating a few days, i felt sick of it because eating too much fried and oily food makes me feels bloating. And another thing that is, i feels that i am spending more money by buying fast food. I discovered that, by cooking my own food, i can save more money as well. Besides that, eating own cook food is much healthier, too...

Hi Myfb, even if you are too busy to cook, you can still eat healthy by selecting those Chinese cooked food instead of fast food. I think the noodle stalls add more vegetables into the noodle soup than those fast food restaurants. It is nearly impossible to have enough dark leafy vegetables when you eat out in McDonald or KFC or Pizza Hut. I think if we eat at fast food restaurants occasionally, that is bad enough. Worse if we eat everyday. We will definitely get sick!

Yes i agree with you. Junk food and fast food is becoming increasingly popular. In my opinion the main reason is that people are working a lot and so many feel that it is best to go for a quick meal. I myself prefer to eat such a meal. I do not like cooking that much. I am not much of a fanatic of healthy food either since i do not like meat and veggies a lot. I know that is not that good, and I am in no way recommending that you do like me. However I think that with the increase in work and duties, people are not able to spend much time thinkning about cooking healthy food. Furthermore it is worth noting that many food sellers, restaurants and take aways are in more competition and so they lower their prices. As a result it becomes even more atractive to buy from them rather than cook yourself.

Hi Grkelly, I eat out a lot too. I agree with you that when we are working long hours, it is impossible to find time to cook. However, that does not mean we have to eat unhealthy junk food. There are many ways to eat out that are low cost and healthy. Even if we are to eat at fast food restaurants, we can choose healthier menu. Subway is still better than KFC in term of food choice. At least the selection of fried food is limited. Pizza is good for busy people, as long as we do not add in the soft drink or fried chicken wings.

Hi Emjay, I am sorry for your young cousins too. They do not know that they are poisoning themselves with fast food.
