Do you have a special pet?

Birca - My sweet girl, 8 years old and never been ill one single day.
I love the sweet noises she makes if she talks to me and it's great to cuddle with her.

I have a barn owl. She is with me since she is a few weeks old. Her name is Birca. It's a girl and she is about 8 years old now. She never been ill in all these years. Today was a big day for her. She was moddel for 1 day. At this moment I can not show you the pictures that will take till Ocotber but I am sure they will be great. I love her dark eyes if she is looking at me, or better we look in each others eyes. And I love the noises she is making when she is talking to me or when we are cuddling. Would you like to have a barn owl or do you prefere an other kind of animal more?

Wow. I have heard something about owl but never speak or write with the person who own one. By the way she got really nice name. I don't know if I would like to have owl because I don't know anything about this mysterious animals. I know that I like their looks the way how they hunt is amazing and unique. Could you tell me some more about her? Maybe this is my only one occasion in life to know something about owls.

Actually I wanted an other bird of prey. I started with her because barn owls are very easy to keep. They love to cuddle and you can even teach them tricks like rolling over. I never teached her that because I think she should stay a bird too. A barn owl is also a bird that only flies if they are hunting/need food. So they don't fly for fun like many birds of prey do. If you keep a bird like that you should be aware of that. I keep her outside summer and winter. Since she is not really able to get fat I have to feed her more during wintertime. Which isn't really that much. a young owl you you start feeding by hand, but you do have to watch out they don't start to see every human being as food supplient. If they do so, they start screaming. The only thing you can do, if it comes that far, is ignore it. And give the food if the owl is not screaming. (I had a male like that and the whole neighbourhood could hear him). Birca had eggs every year twice, even as the male was not there anymore. The male should bring the food but since they don't hunt themselves and I feed them, Birca was more interested in me as she was in him. And we are still big mates. Because she can get 20 years old and I don't want her to only accept food from me, I let other people feed her too.

So she wasn't interested with a owl guy. She looks lovely. Could you tell me what she eats? Sorry to ask so much question.

Wow, I learnt something new, I didn't think owls were or could be tamed, I thought they were only wild, and you said you cuddle her? Wow that is tame, I would worry she would peck me. I have a special pet, or should I say I HAD a special pet, his name was Zeus he was a ginger cat that I absolutely adored and pampered, he was the only cat I would allow on my bed, he would know when I wasn't well and follow me everywhere, out of all our four cats he was the only one who sat on my lap. I have a bit photo-framed pic of him that I cherish, I still miss him.

I must say that the barn owl is a real special pet. It is not possible for us to have it in the city. I can see it in the zoo only. I am not very interested in having the pets like birds, although I like them. I like to have a pet like a cat or dog. Since they seem to have more emotions and understand human beings. I love China

what makes you think a dog or cat show more emotion? My owl is cuddling, responding on what I say. She shows many kind of emotions.

That is very interesting indeed. I have not had an owl as a pet. They way you have described really makes it very attractive to have one. So far, I only have cats as my favorite pets. One I have now is very sweet and very friendly. She likes greeting people who visit my home. She acts like a member of the family !

my cat walks with me on the road since a few years. But if I have to make a choice between both of them it's my Birca.

You have an owl as a pet?! I am so jealous! From where I come from I can't have those kinds of pets, They're either in the zoo or I need a qualified license. I would love an owl! They're so cute and fluffy! I absolutely adore birds! I wouldn't mind an eagle! =D

I did not catch my owl outside, she is wearing a ring and I have papers that she is mine. As I was still breeding with her I was member of a birdorganisation. Via them I could order rings for the baby owls. At the ministery I had to ask for the papers. So everyone who bought one of my owls became one with a ring and papers. But ofcourse some birds of prey are forbidden to keep here too.

Birca is beautiful! Yes, I have a special pet. Actually I've had a couple that were very dear to me. My current one is my pup (she's actually over a year old now, but I just don't have the heart to call her a dog). She is very human like, but then again my husband and I raised her that way. She has been a wonderful addition to the family. We love her very much. I've also had a cat that touched my heart more than any other that I've had. He's gone now, but I treated him like a baby and used to take him everywhere with me. And although I prefer dogs and cats, I wouldn't mind having a barn owl. Not for a pet, but to have around the yard to help keep the rats and mice down. Unfortunately with being out in a rural area, we have our share of rodents and an owl (or more) would be a big help! Happy mylotting!
