Should college athletes be paid?

This was a topic I have heard as of late thanks to the recent scandal coming out of the University of Miami, since thanks to alumnus who already give money or presents to top players, should the school be able to pay the athletes directly to try and curb this behavior?
I think this is a horrible idea myself. College athletes are ALREADY paid, for the most part they are given complete free rides through college, as someone still facing a pile of debt thanks to student loans I would be eternally grateful for free schooling.
Furthermore, even if they did get paid something, they would STILL be receiving such benefits and gifts from certain alumnus and other interested parties. Just then they would also be getting free school, a paycheck, and these incentives.
What do you guys think about this? Should college athletes be paid?

Athletes from our University are given a complete
scholarship grant as long as they retain being an athlete and maintain the given average grade. They are also given allowance every month. I think athletes should not be paid, but like what we did give them scholarship and allowance. They
maybe also given incentives and treats for a particular time. Being an athlete should only be an extra
curricular activity. If they get paid, they may focus more on being an athlete and disregard their other subjects.
