Store names that repel buyers? Names that just don't fit the store?

So I just saw an add on myLot for a jewelry store called Ugly Otter. The jewelry doesn't look to bad but the name gets to me. How is putting "ugly" in a jewelry store's name a good idea? That doesn't sound look a good sign to a potential buyer. I'm also not sure how otter is related to jewelry either. Would you feel confident buying jewelry from a store that called itself "ugly"? What do you think of store names that don't make sense or seem to give a bad impression of the products inside?

Sea Otter - A sea Otter in the water
No way I'm going into a store that demeans my otter! He was my first favorite animal and he is beautiful! By using this name they just made a lifetime enemy! I wish them ill!

I haven't seen this side of you before - it is really something! :) I do agree that in this case ugly is misplaced!

First thing is I hope you realize this 'Ugly Otter' is doing what needs to be done to bring in customers. GET THEM INTERESTED! If you saw a list of three options which would you chose to check out first- JCPennies, Sears or Ugly Otter? Wouldn't you be more interested to check out the latter?

I would. However my attention could be positive or negative. First impressions are very powerful and will make or break the sale!

Yes, that is why they work so hard to get our interest.

I would not mind that name. Since it doesnt really sound that bad. There is a store however in my town that I am not so fond. The name is White market and outside it had a box once that said White trash only and another one, something like black box. And this is outside of an oriental store.

Well...that's an interesting marketing plan. I'm not sure how offending one's customers is going to help one's business though.

Some business people coin up brand names that inspire curiosity. It's possible to rationalize the owner's choice for this name by saying that the ugly otter compensates for its ugliness by making the finest jewelry. On the other hand, some people can be spontaneous to the extreme like the tale of the cherokee indian who named his son after something he witnessed at the time of his son's birth: "Two Dogs Fighting".
