Everyone has their own opinion on where to start as a freelancer. I personally began with Helium, but it was a lot better then because their pay structure was a lot more profitable. At this point, if you are looking for positive criticism along with the ability to make money, I would suggest trying out Textbroker. The site has different pay structures and is great for newbies and because there are so many different article topics available, there is something for everyone.

It is really tough to start out as a freelancer. My advice is to first work in a company and do freelancing at the side. That way, you can build your experience while also looking for small clients online. Once you've built your portfolio then it will be easier for you to find freelance jobs and make it your main source of income.

I have tried both freelancer and elance but competition here is really tough and finding a job is hard. You should probably look for an outsourcing site that is made particularly for Indians. You will have a better chance of landing with a good job.
