Do everything to save your dog?

This woman in Alaska punched a bear in the nose to save her dog. I dont know if just about anyone would do this to save their dogs.
I have a dog that I adore and Im afraid of dogs (yeah go figure ) anyways, I was out for a walk with Miky when this dog appeared at the end of the street. The owner lets his dog roam freely . Its a big dog and I got scared right away but when he got closer, I stepped in front of Miky and shooed the dog away. I was shaking in my shoes to say the least but the dog did turn around and went home. I turned around and went home also but as I was walking, I kept looking back to make sure he wouldnt come back.
So I KNOW I would have done the same thing as this woman did, I would do just about anything to make sure my dog isnt hurt. Id do same for a loved one .
Do you think you'd be able to step up to a bear to save your dog? Have you ever been in such a situation before?

Oh, God! I hope I will never be in such situation, because the bear will end up with his nose broken!
Of course I'd try to protect my dog from everything, no matter if the "thing" is another dog, a snake or a bear.
I was in a situation like this when a stray bit my old dog Nera. He was a huge, black dog and he grabbed Nera by her back and he was shaking her like she was a piece of cloth. Nera wasn't a small dog but she was old and weak and she couldn't even run away to escape. Luckily she was wearing a vest (it happened two years ago in November) and the teeth of the aggressive dog stopped in that vest.
Do you think I stayed there, looking how he was doing harm to my dog? No! I grabbed him by his neck and I hit him until he dropped Nera.
In a normal situation, I wouldn't hit a dog. I wouldn't even get close to such a huge unknown dog. But that was not a normal situation. My dog was in danger and she needed my help.

Lets say that I wouldnt try punching a bear on the nose just for fun to see what he'd do. I forgot to give out the link to the story. According to the woman, it seems the bear was indeed taken by surprise when she punched him It might be something Id try ""IF"" ever I had to defend against a bear.......lets hope it never happens though

Of course we don't have too many chances against a bear but it is good to think positive.
Imagine yourself punching the bear into his nose? He would be so surprise! He would probably turn his back and leave. (here I would need a new emoticon: a yellow face with a long nose like Pinocchio's )

I wonder whether the woman came across the bear in the field or zoo.But then,no matter where I meet it,far be it from me to dash ahead regardless of my safety to save my dog.A dog is nothing but pet ,not endangered animal ,is it worth my taking a risk?

Sounds like the bear was in her backyard attacking her dog. I dont know if you have a dog or not but as far as Im concerned, my dog is like family. I dont have kids and my dog is my kid. I know dogs arent endangered animals, but I think I would put my life at risk to save my dog. Silly I know but I know I couldnt help myself!!

We have the same here with dog cemeteries and even dog hotels. Im afraid I dont have the means for those .
Well if you ever see a bear in the city, there will be a real problem then not only for you and your dog but for everybody else too!!!

Yes dog hotels with tv and nice plush beds for them and pools and all that for your dog. Of course it costs more than a human hotel!!!! I love my dog, but I wouldnt pay that much money to send him to a hotel. There are still hotels here where I can take my dog in the room with me.
Yes there are dog cemeteries too. I wouldnt bury my dog in one of those, its way too expensive. I would bury him on my property though.

I would do the same I take care of dogs for a living for 11 years I have been charged by many dogs and never been bitten once. In the dog world you must go forward if you backup that is a sign of weakness. If you needed help I am sure your dog no matter how big would come to your aid.Ran into a lot but no bears yet

Lets hope we never run into a bear. My dog never bit me also. You're right, I think that if ever someone or some wild animal wanted to attack me, he would defend me. I hope that never happens either!!
Strange but if Im alone and a dog was to charge on me, I might turn around and run away.......but if my dog is with me, I'll step in front of my dog and face the other dog. Silly I know but I wouldnt let anyone or anything hurt my dog.

We have barricaded our compound on all sides and in fact raised the height a bit just so that our dog does not jump out. We believe in the prevention is better than cure method. We keep our compound clean of all weeds so that no reptile, if any, goes unnoticed. We keep a constant vigil on the dog and if we notice anything abnormal such as if the coat is dry or if the dog does not eat all this is taken care of without any delay.

Our dog what you may say also the 'indoor' kind but we enjoy her freedom running around whenever she feels like and we know the place is safe.

Your dog is lucky to have parents like you who make sure he's safe when he goes out to run around.

This is one of the best ways but there are always animals who will be able to jump or climb over the fence if they think theres something on the inside they can feed on.
Our backyard is fenced in also, 6' high fence but I never let my dog alone out there. We're always with him when he's outside to do his thing. The rest of the time he's indoors with us. We get extreme temperatures here, very hot in the summer and it can be very cold in the winter.
Sounds like you have it all under control there,

Woah! That woman had guts, she was able to stand up against a gigantic bear?! She's definitely a legend!
Pets are your best friends, of course you have to save your friends. I had a budgie before and a feral cat sneaked into my house and tackled my bird cage down. I quickly grabbed a broom stick and shooed the cat outside my house. I was so glad my bird was still safe in his little cage. It's instincts! When your friend is in danger, you just got to jump in and save the day! =D

Yes she sure has guts!!. I know about instincts kicking in.
Well lucky your bird was in his cage and you were there to save the day. I bet the cat would have managed to get to your bird eventually though.

Well, in our country we dont have any bears, (thank goodness!) But if it does happen to me, Im not sure, it's hard to say. I'd probably faint first before I even think of punching the bear in the nose. But if it was someone or something I really loved that's in real danger I might just have the courage to do the same thing.

I know what you mean about fainting. I dont usually faint, so I guess I would just stand there or run away but they say we shouldnt run away from a bear that it'll make him want to chase after us. So a punch on the nose seems like the best solution........IF his hands are busy somewhere else though

What a scary situation to be in! I feel as though there have been more and more bear attack stories on the news lately. You'd be amazed at the things you would do when your adrenaline is pumping. You might say now that you don't think you would step up to a bear or other animal, but if the event happened, your adrenaline would most likely take over and you would do the opposite of when your adrenaline was "normal". Pets, epecially dogs, are part of the family and some consider their pets as children, so if you would fight a bear or other animal off for your child(ren), you would do it for you pet, especially if you considered it your child.

It must be SUCH a scary situation and Ive never seen a bear face to face but it must be horrific to face one. I dont have kids, so Miky IS my baby and I know that I would step up to a bear if he was threatening my baby. Like you say, the adrenaline would be pumping and I would turn into the mighty Hulk

if it was another dog i would surely get in the way but a bear is very difficult and scary to handle. it is able to do a lot of damage to both me and the dog.

Sure, a bear is much taller and much bigger than humans. It can kill with its paws, so I guess its something you do under stress. Im happy it was taken by surprise when that woman punched his nose. But his paws were busy on the dog too.....thats why she could do it probably.
I forgot to include a link in my discussion, here it is now if you'd like to read the story.
