Why Can't We Talk About Money?

I am just kind of curious as to why every discussion with dollar amounts in it gets deleted. I don't see what the big deal is. We are information sharing on here aren't we. I asked a question about how much people spend at the grocery store and it got deleted. Also if you say how far you are away from cash out on here it gets deleted, which is a little more understanding, but I don't see why it matters that we tell each other how shy of cash out we are. It doesn't give away how much we are making or anything, it just says we are close. So why do you think we can't talk about money?

Not 'every discussion with dollar amounts in it gets deleted'.
If thre is a topic to discuss then it will reamain but if it is just a survey/poll then it will indeed be removed.
MyLot tell us in the Guidelines that polls are not allowed but they do not tell us anywhere not to talk about earnings. Indeed GoAskAlice has already said in the past that talking about earnings, if it is a discussion, will remain.
When I find where he said it I will post the link here.

Not every discussion with the dollar amounts gets deleted, it is how a member initiates the discussion that is what stays and or gets deleted. What I did early on is that when I use to get the notifications, I would open that in one tab and the guidelines in another. I would match up what exactly is stated with the do nots in the guidelines.
I did this so often that now I have them memorized. So anytime I start a discussion, my brain re-reads it and I ask myself is this a poll, and or anything in the do not so that I do not waste efforts. Do not feel bad it does happen and we all learn with time. Maybe doing the two tab thing shortly before, you submit a discussion may help you also.

We should not refrain a money discussion because it is part of life and also consider the do in the guideline that we should talk about anything under the sun. It is just on how things are phrased. For instance which is the best browser falls under a poll. Once I enter and say I like firefox there really is nothing else to discuss.
If you were to say, I am using Firefox these days and these are the benefits I get from them. I use to use Chrome and I could not get xyz benefits. Do you find the same benefits when you use one versus the other. Can you give me the reasons and or convince me as to why you find yours more beneficial.
See then members come in with what their benefits are and why and you come back and comment, on how the other is much better for you. So it becomes a back and forth discussion and not just selections.
My girl dances all the time, she has more energy then me these days. lol

hwg:I agree with you. I do not start discussions involving money mostly because I have learnt it fully. In the same way the discussions which browser you use is also getting deleted many times. I am only surprised because when I came active in May I gave that as my first discussion and it was deleted--it was because I had put A or B. You are always dancing in ur avatar. Nice. May be I am repeating it second time. good day.

I guess, an admin would/should be able to reply to this . If it is anything related to earnings about mylot, it is bound to get deleted, according to the terms and conditions, but since you say it was just about expenditure on groceries, it needs an explanation.
Let's see , what the mod or the admin has to say. Or well, maybe others have something valid.

Polls/surveys get deleted. Quality discussions stay put.
If a toic is asking 'what do you earn?' or 'what do you spend?' then it is a poll and therefore a violation.

I see, well guess people, you need to frame the question differently, instead of asking how much you spend, ask how can I cut my costs which are this much?
Will this be considered a poll now?
And if in replies, people post their expenditure and give tips, then ?

I wonder if this post will get deleted too. I'm not sure why we can't talk about money. I guess they don't want this site to become a referral wonderland. But, I don't understand why talking about how much you spend at a grocery store would be a problem. That isn't about this site at all! I think the deletions are done based on key words. I don't even think a human does them. I think the system is set up to detect certain words and then deletes posts that have them. I'm just guessing about that, but that's what I think.

"how much you spend at a grocery store" is a poll and polls are deleted as per the Guidelines.
"I don't even think a human does them"
No doubt admin GoAskAlice will dissolve your doubts when he reads your thoughts.

I really don't understand why that is a poll question, but I understand that polls are deleted per the Guidelines. I can also understand the rephrasing the question might work better. I guess I was wrong about the key words. Seems like a lot of work for someone to read all the posts, but if that is what is happening, then that's great.

"I think the deletions are done based on key words. I don't even think a human does them."
I beg your pardon? I am in fact quite human thank you. Yes it is a lot of work, but I have tools that make it a bit easier.
"I really don't understand why that is a poll question"
I have some information on my profile that briefly explains what I consider polls. If something isn't clear, I am always glad to answer questions and explain things further. It's why I'm here.

ladym-- There must be some other factor for deleting that discussion--possibly worded affecting somebody or wounding somebody's feelings.
It should be alright for us not to discuss about earning openly -- this is the trend nowadays in all companies except government companies -- two people may be joining the company on the same day in the same capacity sitting side by side -but the pay may be different and one will not know how much the other person is drawing. I work as a freelancer in chennai and honestly I do not know how much other faculty are paid though unofficially we may hear some version now and then.

The problem is not the money. When you pose a closed ended discussion topic, it does not contribute to discussion. If you think about your grocery discussion, the way it was worded made it a poll type question. You could have probably phrased it a different way. "I spend about 200 a week usually but I have had to cut back. Do you think that is a reasonable amount for a family of five plus one big dog? I use coupons and we do not eat out or buy convenience foods, do you have more ways I could cut back. What are your experiences?" Keep in mind, I was fooled. I answered that discussion, not realizing it is a poll. I think it is okay to say: I am close to cashout, and I think I may make it. There may actually be a faq about that one, so maybe you can find it. I just knew it would probably go down. MyLot and Gather have different kinds of rules, and MyLot is much stricter about some kinds of posts. I think just saying how far away from cash out you are again is kind of closed ended. Not really anything to discuss. Oh, also,it might be a milestone post. We do not post milestones like birthdays and anniversaries as posts, although they can be mentioned, in passing, I believe. When your hubby gets a job, do not come on and say "Hubby got a job", but you can come on and say "after two phone interviews and a five hour face to face interview, and another interview where he was only seen fifteen minutes, my husband got a job. Don't you think the interview processes are getting harder?" Because then you are inviting people to share experiences. I think we all get stuff deleted from time to time.

Hi, Bluedoll, welcome to Mylot. Yes, even sometimes experienced users make mistakes in how they word things. It can be hard if you are accustomed to another type of site where those posts would be acceptable. Just keep in mind when you post that there should be something to discuss and not something that can be replied to in one word or phrase. It also does not have to be a question, but it does need to be something that will generate discussion.

Interesting to understand what is required and what the guidelines suggest. I am knew here so not really an authority but by the sound of this the problem is indeed not a keyword like money but how a discussion can or should be presented. Hope it is not too tricky and I understand it because deleted posts can hurt. My two cents.

I know if we talk about earnings from My Lot, or any money at all relating to My lot, that is not allowed. Plus, I suspect discussions relating to money making progrmas with specific references to money that could be earnt.
I would think discussions about the cost of groceries would be allowed, but it would have to be worded properly. This is becase it is most likely a computer program that picks up the inappropiate discussions, and it is going to lok at generic terms. For instnace, if you start a discusiion with " How much money do your groceries cost?", it may be deleted. But if you start the discusion along ht elines of "My groceries are costing so much"! , that should be allowed.

I have talked about money many times / in fact that is the reason there is such an interes) but it all depends on what you say about it and how you say it. I have talked aboout legit sites without promoting them and I have answered posts about other ways of making money that weren´t deleted.

It's not that we can't talk about money, after all we do have discussion catagories where it's actually a topic. But, it's against the law here in the states to discuess personal information. Placing actual dollar ammounts is devolaging far to much personal information and can be used against a person. That's why the site only requires what country you're from for payment purposes. You may offer more information should you desire to, but certain information isn't made public for security purposes. So yes, you can discuess money, but putting actual dollar ammounts is against the rules and should be respected.

I see that a lot of other people have already responded but let me confirm things. Talking about money, per se', is not a violation in itself. But simply asking "how much money you spend, earn, etc" is a basic poll question and not really conducive to conversation.
