They some relationships cost something. But one must be very careful not to put a price on that cost.

It doesn't matter if a relationship cost something. What matters is if it is (that) worth to you. Only then you are willing to pay the "price".
A relationship only works if both are willing to work on it, which also means that both have to get something out of it (energy, love, etc).
