What is ‘junk’?

India

In my hotmail account I have recently received an email from a close relative of mine which has been referred to as ‘junk’ by the email service provider. I have no idea of ‘junk’. Can anyone throw light on it?

It's similar to spam I guess in hotmail they use junk and in other emails like Gmail and Yahoo they use Spam. Its the same thing unwanted mail from unknown people.

I use Yahoo and I still get e-mails that end up under spam/junk mail when they should be under my Yahoo mail!Sometimes I get my dailey Mylot Digest under spam! Same goes with messeages from Facebook friends! I don't know why this happens. What I really don't understand is why somedays I get something under junk/spam mail when other days it is under my regular mail? I even get spam on my regular mail! This is so strange!

That's what I was trying to say above. The system is far from perfect. Some days my spam filters work better than others.

Junk mail is somewhat like spam mail but not exactly that. It is generally something that is useless and does not have any value to you.The email provider usually screens all mail and sends only the authentic ones to the inbox.Sometimes a genuine mail, like that of your relative does creep into the junk section. Then if you feel that it is genuine you can move it into your inbox by going to the 'move to' icon. This will transfer the mail to your inbox. It is always better to go through your spam and junk folders because you never know when an authentic mail may find its way into them.I always go through these folders everyday and delete them entirely if there is nothing of value in them.

I'll tell you whats junk, Hotmail is junk. Stop using that inferior email service. Use Gmail, in my opinion it is the best online email service around.

Why are you accusing Hotmail as junk because many of my friends use it and they have nothing to complain against it?

The junks mail are those mail that reach to your email and those senders don't belong to your list of contacts.

The junk or 'spam' file is for male that has a unknown email address. If you have people you want to hear from then you need to put their email address and information in your contacts and then when you get an email from that address it will go into your regular inbox. Anything that doesn't correspond with any addresses in your contacts will go in the spam or junk file or box.

Hello, it is new thing for me. I am listening it from you. A computer literate can make it clear. I know only junk foods. Junk foods are not good for health.

I guess the IP address of your relative has been blacklisted by certain online system. This is the main reason whatever mails send out from your relative will be considered as Junk categories. You can ask your relative to send an email to your another relative who is using the same email service provider but not the same IP address as yours. If the same problem will appear, my guess should be right.

Ther others have described junk and spam email very well, and how to try to get rid of it while still letting the mail you actually want get through to you. I would only add that these precautions won't always have the desired effect because the people who send junk mail keep using different addresses. So if you mark one address to go into the junk mail file or trash, they will keep sending that same email under different addresses. Because of all the phishing schemes, your junk folder may sometimes receive emails from PayPal or your phone company or bank that should have gone to your in box. So it's always a good idea to look through your junk mail folder before deleting, just in case.
