In my country, every year millions of people register and prepare for the civil servant examinations. In their views, civil servant is absolutely an attractive job which has many advantages. As a civil servant, you could receive your salary on time for it is paid by the government which is the most powerful organization in the country. So long as you don't make serious mistakes, you don't need to worry that you may be fired. While people employed by the companies have to work over time frequently, you could freely control your spare time after 8 hour's work. And civil servants are always welcomed in the marriage market. So what do you think of such phenomenon? And how about the situation in your country? I'm expecting for your opinions.

I heard that in my state there are 1000 of application has been made for 10 seats in civil service examination. It is the best security for the people who joined in government job. They get salaries on time apart from bribery. In my country government personnel don't have commitment to their job. They had lack of punctuality and they treat their office as their homes. They also get many incentives to them . Government didn't even give such incentives to poor people. They are more to say, but I ashamed to tell about my country. The word red tapsim is the situation in our government office. Their behavior is so bad that we are not wished to go there.

Thank you for your response. I used to hear news which stated that the hottest civil servant job attracted nearly one thousand applicants. You could imagine the extent of competition. It's quite normal that the public are not content with the behaviour of civil servants. Some civil servants behave as if they are the masters of country, but according to the law their main function is to serve the public.

It's true that a good person who becomes civil servant will be inevitably affected by the atmosphere of department. But I believe that he or she will still keep some conscience more or less. Anyway, it's a positive phenomenon that more and more educated people join the government. It could be worse if civil servant jobs are left to those bad people.

You are right, The main duty of civil servant is serving the nation. This is their main motive. So if a good person have joined in civil servant job, after few days you can that he will change his character it because he is with open eye that most of them are bribing and building huge houses so he began to think Why cant I ?

Yes, it is a good job. It has good benefits to work for the city or state or federal governments. My ex husband has a government job. He will retire in about 4 years with a good pension. My dad was also a civil servant and he made good money operating the locks on the Champlain Canal System in NY.

Thank you for your response. You live in United States? I also hear many people said that people in USA prefer private company jobs to civil servant jobs. The social status of US civil servant is not very high. They regard such phenomenon as a sign of advanced country. I don't know whether it is the fact or not.

Civil service jobs are good here too.. the benefits are really good.. good insurance. Private companies are big also, but many blue collar jobs are civil service and they pay fairly well.

Job seekers used to dislike working with the government simply because the private sectors pays better than the government. They didn't realize that working in the government is more stable and the government do not have the 'hire and fire' policy unless one made mistakes that are unpardonable. People are shifting their preferences and now competing to enter the civil service as most private sectors now are paying more or less like the government.

Thank you for your response. I think whether working for private companies or government depends on the preferences of different people. The atmospheres in private companies and government agencies are quite different. To those who wanna earn a lot of money, private companies could offer them better platforms. To those who wanna lead a regular life, civil servant is the best choice.

Even in my country , civil service is a top job and people find it most attractive. I think in every developing country we find such a situation.it is the most powerful job which can be achieved by everyone who work and study well. Unlike politicians, no need to be rich and no need to be influential. A poor farmer son can become a civil service.

Thank you for your response. It's a universal phenomenon that in many developing countries civil servant is an attractive job. The main reason I think is that the power of government in those countries is very big. It could control a lot of resources. And the private companies usually could not offer competitive treatment for their employees.

Civil servant jobs are rare and so competitive in my country. They are only attractive with all mentioned privileges in management level but in junior levels people toil to the ground but at the end they are paid less. People prefer private jobs in private companies because they pay more and sometimes employees are treated somehow good than in government.

Thank you for your response. The situation in my country is quite similar to that in your country. Some friends of mine who are civil servants also tell me that the treatment of officials in charge of departments is much better than that of civil servants at the basic level. The salary of civil servant at the basic level is much lower than that of white-collar workers in multinational companies.

Yes, it is also happened in my country. Civil servant job is attractive enough for people in my country. Especially because of high number of unemployment (even for the bachelor one!) and also it is hard to find a job here in my country.
The main attraction point is the monthly salary: even it is not really much, but it is come every month regularly. It can be used to support life here, anyway.
And also, another attraction point is about pension funds that being given to civil servants after their retirement..

Thank you for your response. Among the people who prepare for civil servant examination, the biggest group is university graduates. Every year millions of new graduates enter labour market, which makes the competition fiercer and fiercer. The starting salary becomes lower and lower. So it's not strange why civil servant vocation becomes more and more attractive.

Over here in Singapore, the government does not offer permanent job anymore.
Many civil servants are hired on contract basis.
After the contract is over, there may not be any renewal.
However, the pay and benefit are comparable to outside, and the job is more structured.

For me, no. I had worked with the government before and I had seen a lot of discouraging things there. No, I do not want to work as a civil servant or government worker anymore because I think it has a lot of bureaucratic red tapes.

Thank you for your response. I also heard that many civil servants could not get used to the atmosphere in the government and decided to resign eventually. Some of them become successful businessmen or professionals. So civil servant is not suitable for everyone.

I think it is basically the same. For me, the greatest advantages of being a civil servant here are security of tenure and better retirement benefits. Also, one could enjoy paid vacation days off. Civil servants also work only on weekdays. They don't have work on holidays and still get paid. :))

Thank you for your response. It's a fact that job security is a great advantage of civil servant. As for pension, a retired civil servant could usually get double amount than a retired worker. The public often blame civil servants for their better retirement benefits. It seems that the current pension system of civil servant will be reformed in the future.

Yeah, the salary of civil servant is also low here, which makes it impossible for the government to attract high quality applicants. The result is that the quality of public service is so disappointing.
