There are people around the world who worship idols. And give high value and respect to them. I respect others viewpoint and don't criticize others. I however feel that idols do not have power to help or hurt us. They were made by humans and yet some worship them as a god. They can't "see, hear, walk, or talk." I reflect on an illustration about a man who cuts down a tree and cooks his food and then he builds an idol and bows down to worship it. How do you view idols?

I have the same view point that you have. I just cant understand how a idol can help us. They are made by humans. I think humans are creator this Idol so they have to worship humans.I have asked most of the students believed in Idols and they say that they are seeing God through this idols.I think it is better to believe in God than Idols. They are making excuses themselves. In my country most of the men and women are superstitious. In my country there is Holy place where Hindus comes and pray. While praying they can see that the light from dark forest. They believed it is God. But the atheist have discovered that it has been lighted by the officials of Temple and with the help of police. It has been proved. But they are not withdrawing from such belief.

Yes I agree humans create these idols and then they make it a "god" and worship it. Which it has no power to do anything. That is an interesting point that you bring out about the Temple and how such things are actually lite. I too agree that there are a lot of superstitious people who feel this is important to do. And it is diffinitely better to believe in God than Idols. God has no creator, he has always been on the other hand idols were created by imperfect people so that says a whole lot in itself.

Yes I agree with the statement. I want to say that those who create Idols is for making money. Their main motive to earn money. They want to get money without moving their body. They will get money from each people who think it is God. What do you think.

I guess I never really thought of it this way. But this could be a good point. If they make these Idols are able to get income from them then they are using them to make money.

I was raised Catholic and we often had statues that people prayed under or kept in their homes and prayed to. We never use the term idols because that's actually forbidden by the Bible, and the Catholic Church follows the Bible, or claims to – they interpret the worship of idols differently. They don't use that term. But it's basically the same thing. I thought it was strange when I was a child, and my CCD teacher (that was the woman who taught me about the Catholic faith while I was a child) explained to me that the statue was like a photograph – you're not actually praying to the statue but to the God or saint behind it. The statues just remind you of the God you believe in. I don't know if it's the same in Hinduism or other religions but that's how it was explained to me. I am an atheist now and think the whole thing is irrelevant to my life, but if it makes people happy then I guess it's fine.

@Opalina I agree that even though they may not have used the term it is the same thing like you mentioned. I think that would be hard to understand and comprehend as a child because it seems so confusing. I appreciate what Acts 17:29 JB says: "Since we are the children of God, we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything in gold, silver or stone that has been carved and designed by a man." The Bible has clearly stated that we must make ourselves "a carved image or any likeness of anything in the heaven or on earth beneath or in the waters under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them." It is interesting to me that you were raised catholic and now are atheist. What has caused you to make a drastic change in direction. From at one time believing in God and now not believing in God. Thanks so much for your thoughts. I'm greatly enjoying our conversation.

I was raised in Catholic family too and was taught to pray, kiss, and worship statues.I think there is nothing wrong with the Christian faith because prophet Jesus taught us to worship one God.It is the leader of the Church that teaches idol worship, and mixes Christianity with Paganism. Now I'm happy to have accepted Islam that abolish all kinds of idol worship, and just focuses on the worship of absolutely one God.

What's the difference between directing your worship to a deity whom the object you look at is said to be an image of and -directing it to one whom the object is said to serve as an execution device?
I mean, neither of the g-ds are physically present in the objects (not any more than they were before the objects were reshaped into the worshiped forms). Both g-ds are directly connected to your mind.
So--as a Christian--I say that you were bowing to Christ even though you think you were bowing to Allah.
As a Buddhist, I say that you were bowing to a Buddha even though you think you were bowing to Christ.
As a Flying Spaghettian, I say that you were bowing to The Savory Meatball even though you think you were bowing to a Buddha.
As a Muslim ... etc.

I think there is a big difference in the way a person worships whether it's to an idol or not. Idols are handmade and therefore how can they protect individuals or groups of people when they can't even determine the way they themselves or formed or protect themselves from being broken, etc. Idols in affect would be looking to humans for protection.

They are humans at all.And they just the role models at some field. So we need to learn something from them but not all the part. The people who can become my idol must have differences from other people.People should improving all the time, isn't it? Not blindness.

I do agree that we should work on improving ourselves. There are so many ways of doing that. And there are those that we can look up too as a good example. But we don't want to go to the extreme as to worship a person/ or group of individuals. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with me.

Actually we should not worship idols. Because our idol is now only at a later time you see someone else is better not to worship their retail so my idol is none other than our own.

I agree we diffinitely should not worship idols. They can not add or take away anything in our life. There are so many people who fear that this will happen. But there is no reason for them to have this type of fear.

For me their is nothing wrong in worshiping an Idols. We have different beliefs and manifestation. I really take a bows on an Idols. All though its only a material object that represents a divinity to which religious worship is addressed. It's our way of communing to God or let me say its our devotion.

There are many beliefs and many varying deities in the form of idols. I have thought about this and it seems to me that if an idol was represented by an idol it would be able to take care of itself and not need humans to make it or take care of it. Idols are made by humans and with the research i've done have come to appreciate the fact that their is no need to fear or worship them, for myself. For me I have come to also appreciate that my God doesn't approve of idol worship. Isaiah 42:8 JB " My name is Yahweh, I will not yield my glory to another, nor my honour to idols." Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings.

God clearly states in the Bible that He condemns idolatry so I also do condemn any form of idolatry. God hates worship of idols for He is a jealous God so to me I don't think I have good reason to respect this kind of religious belief because if I do...this is tantamount to tolerating idolatry.
Idols, gods or whatever are nothing but Satan's tool to draw people away from the one and only true God. Idols are created by hands and if they worship them then why don't they worship plates, spoon, flower vase and other creation of hands as well? Idols are either made of wood or chalk or cement or whatever but why don't they worship the wood, or the cement, or the chalk at all? One just needs wisdom to realize worshiping idols is nothing but foolishness.
So as for me just as Apostle Paul when he visited Athens felt so provoked and his spirit was stirred up when he saw the whole city given to idolatry so that he disputed with them and preach them who is the true God I think should also feel and do the same way whenever I see people who worship idols even those people who claim they don't really worship but rather respect the idols which is but a sign of stupidity.

I think worshiping idols is completely useless,no idol of any kind will help people improve their life and health, but if there are people who believe in idols and bow down pray to them,it is their job,I respect their beliefs.I suppose worshiping idols has a little beneficial psychological effect on worshipers because praying to that idol gives them peace of mind and helps them release the stress of daily existence for a while.

I guess like you mentioned those who worship idols feel that it does bring them psychological effects as they feel they get peace. As it is their form of worship. But I do agree with you that they are useless to help or harm us.

That is why the belief in Idols and their "power" confuses me. People have to take care of them so how are they suppose to aide others when they do good deeds or punish others if they do bad deeds? It is a very thought provoking thing to think about if those who worship them thought about.

Yes you are right. Idol or graven images is abomination in the sight of God. Idols are made of woods, stones or any kind of material which comes from the things that were created by God. It some what true on what the Bible says that they worship the creature more than the creator. I know, many of us have different beliefs but it's now the time to realized that. I am not following on the tradition of my forefathers. I followed what the Bible says. I believed that it was the very word of God.

It really makes me think when people say they use idols to represent God but then God clearly states not to use such things to represent anything in the heavens or on the earth. Like you mentioned many people do worship the creation rather than the creator which is sad. I strongly agree with you that we need to listen to the Bible as it is like a letter from our heavenly father. Letting us know how we can draw close to him and how we can please him.

I agree with you, people who have idols have to care for them. They have to dust them off, keep them clean, make sure they aren't broken, etc. So if the idol can't take care of itself, how is it suppose to take care of us.
