They say that this is true especially for those who are also philosophical or argumentative but does not really know what they are talking about so they result to using profanity words. It is something used to express their views and mostly act as an immediate expression or on impulse when they are surprised or when something excites them.
To be honest sometimes I use profanity but then I tend to lessen or sometimes I am surprised by myself and try to refrain because I know it is bad to cuss at someone, whoever they are.
What do you think about this quote?
Dont you think you should have better words to use or better things to say to express a point or when in an intelligent argument with somebody?
Your thoughts?

Profanity should only be a last resort and use rarely, if ever. Anyone who drops the F word and "sh*t" in between and among their sentences does not know how to communicate well and ought to be educated and start doing so by reading books or the newspaper.
However, I'd like to point out that people use other things like "whatever" and "like" in the same capacity that people use cuss words a lot. Although profanity shows horrible taste, I think it's just as important to communicate effectively and choosing your words wisely. You can find out about a person through the way they talk and anyone uses profanity way too much is lost in their ignorance of a better vocabulary.

I agree with you that it should only be a last resort because there are a lot of words or phrases that one can use to express himself. Its not always good to cuss or use profanity words. These are hurtful words and even if you are not directly attacking someone with your words, some are also sensitive and may be offended by the use of such. We should still be reminded that we are not the only ones living in this world and should still take into consideration the other people that are around us. Effective communication, I believe can somehow make the world a better place, because I always believe that everything can be settled in good and smooth talking or conversation, or good communication. Choose words wisely that will not be offensive to anyone, or to yourself. Its not good if you are always using profanity and yes, you can see and know what type of personality a person has with the way he or she uses her words.

I also believe that it is a sign of ignorance, and not something to be emulated. Unfortunately there are others who make it look as if it is a 'cool' thing.
I recently posted a discussion about MTV and how artists use foul language to salute all the kids that support them. I am for freedom of expression, but not when they portray profanity as cool thing for kids. I think it is very ignorant.

Yeah because media says that it is cool. Celebrities and their idols are doing it so it is just fine and cool and classic but for me it is not. there's no good thing about it because its not the proper way to express yourself. You can talk intelligently or smart and overcome your objections or even if you are in a fight with someone, you can overcome it without rage and definitely without profanity.

I think it might have started out as something to say out of anger or pain, but these days...it is all anyone says all the time. Have you watched a movie lately? Every other word is a cuss word of some kind. That Joe Peshey (however you spell it) rants out the F word literally every third word!!! They use profanity so often and I dont' know how they think that it makes the movie any better. I turn them off! A conversation, even in anger can be handled without constant profanity.
I think most cuss simply to show off. And others do it, just case that is what everyone else says. I was in a job once not long ago...I don't cuss and I will tell others that speak to me to stop if they use the profanity while we talk...just normal talking. My boss had this phrase "F-me" that she used CONSTANTLY..whether a good thing happened or a bad thing happened...that 2 word phrase was a constant in her speech. She said it so much that others started to pick it up and next thing I knew..the whole office was using it constantly! But the finaly straw was when I was at home one day...and I forget what happened, but something did and I said it! Second it came out of my mouth, I slapped myself and thought...no, not me, not in my house! Next day at work...it was used in converstaion to me and I spoke up and said..." Do not use that phrase when speaking to me." Of course they all got mad, but I held my ground and eventually they did stop using that phrase when speaking with me. Point being, it just rubs off on you if you are around it constantly.
Intelligence? of course not. I mean, how smart does someone have to be to say a cuss word? Takes no brains at all. Why? THe cuss word mean nothing so if you are intelligent you will know that and use intelligent words. I also think people use them not only to show off, but to display what they think is strength and power to the one they are conversing with. Turns me off and makes my not listen or walk away...now who's got the power!!!!

Yeah, Movies, tv shows, media, radio, well name it they have got every little cuss there is available because they want to show off, as what you have said, and also to get attention more than anyone else. It is something that would really draw attention to most people because that person who cusses more has the most fans or followers. And these fans would follow and make the celebrities their god and does everything that they do even using profanity and the like. Yes using profanity, takes no brain at all because you are just copying someone else's words and you cannot even express yourself in your own words.

Well I think a good argument to be clear, and especially not contain phrases blasphemous !

I think cussing is simply unnecessary. But that will still not stop people from doing it. I was raised in a very old fashioned, traditional way. There is an old saying that goes "women DONT cuss and men only cuss around other men, horses, and hogs." This means that women dont ever cuss and men should never cuss around a woman. Its just ungentlemanly like. Thats just where my morals lye.

Yes it is not right to use profanity words and some people especially the one that you are trying to impress might get turned off and would know and base your first impression and personality when they hear you use such words. It is really unnecessary in a conversation.

C'mon....what the ****?! Couldn't resist. I don't like to use profanity on a regular basis, but, sometimes the situation is warranted. Especially when you need just that right word to emphasize something. I don't cuss "at" people, it's more like when I'm describing something that really makes me irate, it just drives the point home. Now, there are people who use the f word every second word, I don't like that, and that's not called for.

Crap! And that from a Doctor of Philosophy. Profanity is simply an element of cultural context: when I am with people in a pub, I will swear without thinking, using swear words as emphasis; when I am with academics, or strangers, especially women, I will curb my profanity - mostly lol.

Curb your profanity. I like that LOL. Well, maybe there are just some words that are unacceptable to hear most especially sexually profane words. But words like 'crap' is not really, for me, I don't consider it as profanity, more of like an expression because its not that offensive or not directed at anyone.
