Last year, my we went fishing and some of the fish are left and those are still inside the freezer. I am worrying that it is already spoiled. My mom in law does not want to throw it away, she said it is safe because it is kept inside the freezer. But do you think 1 year is too much to store a food inside the ref? I think that it is too much and I am sure that if she will still want to cook the fish, I will say I am on a diet that day.

Well, apparently someone forgot to tell me that there were expiration dates on things if they were stored properly in the freezer. I thought that as long as they were not freezer-burned and did not appear to be spoiled in any way, then they were good to eat. In fact, I am sure that I have eaten frozen meats of every kind after a year in the freezer as long as they were not freezer-burned, and I am still alive, in good health, and have never gotten sick from it.
If you are really that worried about it, then it is best to err on the side of caution and not eat it. However, if your mother-in-law has done this before and not gotten sick, then why stop her unless you know that it is unsafe?

I was not trying to make a joke of it - seriously. Ever since I was a child, we have had a large chest freezer where we keep meats and other frozen items. These meats have come from the store and also family members that hunt. As long as the meat was properly cleaned (the meat from hunting) and properly stored (sometimes even the store bought meat needed to be repackaged to make sure it was properly stored), we have never had a problem with it. Even the slightly freezer burned meat we could use in stews or other dishes with sauce ... unless the meat was very freezer burned or discolored and did not smell right when it was thawing.

Sorry purple. I also keep hunted meat in my freezer and I don't always put a date on it. Like you, I never had a problem with meat, but I had with fish : it is difficult to keep a fish more than a few months in a freezer, before it "did not smell right".

I know some people are spending a fortune to eat a mammoth steak, though it is not recommended to eat a meat frozen during more than a year : there is an increasing risk of bacteria. Same thing for the date on canned boxes : botulism is not a joke.

I agree with you, keeping food in the freezer extends their shelf life but one year will not be the maximum for that, especially for fish. I can't stand thinking that the fish are still there. I cleaned the fridge today and I just want to throw them, but of course I cannot.

Since you are the resident fish expert here, Top, I guess that I will just have to take your word on that one.

As long as it's been frozen solid with no thaws and refreezes over that period of time, it should still be safe to eat. It may have lost some of its texture (freezer burn) but that doesn't affect its food value. The reason "they" tell you to toss fish after three months or whatever it is, is twofold: First, they want you to go and buy more. Secondly, when you buy frozen fish from a store, it's already been frozen for quite some time and it could become freezer burned in your freezer after three months, then most people would want their money back or worse, want to sue.
I've eaten fish that was in the freezer at least a year and I'm still here to tell about it.

I just can't believed what I've read, but how come it is stored that long?
Well, I hope you can throw it without her knowledge and when she asks...simply tell, maybe the cat cooked it (just kidding)
I don't think it's good to eat or cooked the fish..that's too long

hi:)
I think a one year old fish is not really good anymore for people consumption, even frozen food that already have preservatives cant last that long, it's better if you throw it away because it might give you stomach ache or worst when they eat that.

Wow! You should really get rid of it! just fact of having one year old fish in your fridge multiplies risk of getting different microbes you don't want to get.. and please, take care of your mother in law! Just throw it away!

Since, as you say, the fish in question has not been cleaned, DO NOT EAT IT. Even if it isn't spoiled, the taste will be awful. Any time you take fresh-caught fish home, you must clean it right away or it will, at least, taste bad.

I agree.. The fish arrived home already frozen and they are too lazy to clean it up... I don't know how to clean fish and I can't even if I know how. The fish were parrot fishes and when I was young I remember having parrot fishes as pets... I can't eat them especially now when I know it will not taste good.

I don't know how good it would be after a year, even if it was frozen the entire time. I wouldn't be so worried about it being spoiled, but I'm sure it would be freezer burned. Since this was initially posted a month ago, did it get thrown out or used since that time?

My goodness, one year has passed and still in your freezer! Even if kept in the freezer I think one year is too long and surely that fish is no longer safe to consume. How could you just store the fish that long. I only store fish or meat or whatever perishable goods in my freezer for a week or two and I make sure I have them all consumed and if I can't I give them away. I won't eat a fish which has been frozen for a year. That could kill!

Huwaaatttt??? you mean one year she didn't even clean the ref. I mean one year she just stored that poor fish inside the freezer and still thinking of cooking it, my goodness. Tell her that it is not good to meat which is stored for so long even if it was inside the fridge. She might end up poisoning other family members if she insist preparing that.

the fish should be fine. my dad used to go deer hunting and we still have meat in the freezer from 2 and 3 years ago. and its still good meat. fish should be no different from deer meat. as long as it was in the freezer and not the fridge. the fridge will not keep it cold enough but as long as it was in the freezer it will be fine to eat.
