How much does a car license plate cost in your place?

Recently a friend of mine bought a new car. He told me that the price of a new car license plate has already risen to more than 50,000 RMB (more than 8,000 USD). I felt a little surprised for several months ago a license plate just costed about 40,000 RMB (more than 6,000 USD). It seems that the value of a license plate in my city is higher than a gold bar of the same weight. The city government claimed that the high price of license plate could limit the amount of new cars, which could reduce the traffic jam. But in reality I don't see any positive effects of such policy. So how about the situation in your place? Do you think high price could solve the problem? I'm expecting for your opinions.

LOL this sounds silly to me to believe that increasing the price of the number plates you could check the number of cars used. At least increased prices of cars would reduce the number of cars on the road to some extent.

In big cities improving the public transportation is the essential way to solve the problem of traffic jam. The high price of car license plate may prohibit some people from owning cars, but they have no better alternatives.

You mean city in China, right? Is it Beijing? Using 50,000RMB, we could got another new car, although not a luxury one.

I mean Shanghai, the only city in China that issues license plates by auction. From the beginning of this year Beijing also began to control the number of new license plate. It issued about 20,000 new license plates for free monthly, the effect of which I think is worse than that of the method of Shanghai.
