Post=dated checks are so confusing

I got a letter from my voice teacher that she wants post-dated checks. Now I have never liked to write post-dated checks. It is not that I would not have any money to pay each one in time because well I do get a monthly pension. The thing is that in some months I have other obligations, besides my usual tithes and offerings, such as charity, buying extra things that I cannot use a credit card for, and so that I cannot keep the numbers in sequence.
I wonder how others feel like Ido?

I agree with the others. Something's off.
I took voice and piano lessons for ten years. My mom wrote a check every month. If I missed a lesson due to schedule conflict (rare because my training came first, second only to my horse & school work), as long as I gave them 48 hours minimum notice It was taken out of the next month's amount. They were so busy that they could always fill a slot in 24 to 48 hours. If I was sick, I wasn't allowed to go because they didn't want to spread anything & my teacher was older; not that I felt up to it.
I would speak privately about the matter with your vocal instructor. If it is for the simple reason, that she needs to show documentation of accounts receivable to a bank (which would be odd because, technically post dated checks are illegal) then ask her for a six month contract. Contracts are legally binding forms of documentation of accounts receivable.
Explain that writing post dated checks goes against your moral fiber and while you wish to continue your practice under her, this might be a deciding factor for you. If she is not willing to work with you, then I would look for someone else.
It really isn't worth putting your self in a financial bind for someone else. Especially on a fixed income. I'm a full time student, I fully understand fixed incomes.

I think she will have no problem. I can see writing one if I am to on the day when the check is due for, but in that vase it is maybe a few days later. I feel that I should write checks for the day that I take lessons. And it is confusing otherwise.
I think she does it because she also gives younger children lessons and that way she can make sure they come for the lessons.

If I had slacked off, my mom would have killed me. My dad was not that much creative unless it came to cooking. But they brought me up to not go off some place when I should have been studying. The trouble is now people do not care and instead of the parents telling the children what to do, the children tell the kids what to do.
The rule of the teacher is that we can only quit if there is a legitimate reason. So I guess the post-dated checks are to make sure that they will not take time off just to go to a movie or something. With me and my friend who is just a little younger them I, we will be there and do not need to write post-dated checks.

I guess it is just what our society has come to. No one is accountable for anything anymore. They don't care if they inconvenience others, so long as the do what they need or want.
When I was growing up my parents made sure that I held up my end of my obligations. Voice lessons, taking care of my horse, getting myself ready for a horse show, school work, etc. When I was in my teens, they gave me a little more rein on my own life, but that also meant I had more responsibility. If I didn't make it to a lesson or the like, it was my financial responsibility.

I suppose I am a bit confused. What benefit would it be to the teacher to ask for a post dated check? Wouldn't the teacher want a check that could be cashed immediately? Also, can't the person writing the check can still enter it in their check register and subtract it out as usual so that they do not overdraw themselves when the person to whom it was written cashes it in the future? I would think it would be more beneficial for the person writing the check...they get to earn interest on that money a bit longer? Please help me...apparently I do not understand!

Oh, I see. You seem to be a very orderly person who keeps fantastic records! That is an interesting strategy that the teacher has to assure that students come back for future lessons rather than go out with friends and party!

I know what I was like when I was young. I really hated all those scales and could not wait until I could play those fantastic piece.s So I guess things have not changed much since I was young, but I know then I really loved to sing and if Ihad had singing lessons I would have been there rain or shine.
I really have to get another bookcase to put the rest of my dvds.

I did write one for my singing teacher since she wanted all the checks to be on the 1st and they were to last a month. I do not like doing that because later on I had a couple of charities that came u[p and that meant that they had a later number then the check and yet were dated earlier.

Why in the world would she want you to do that? I guess she wants all the checks in hand and figures that's the best way to insure it, she must have a very tight budget.
When I post-date a check, which is rarely, I just enter it in my check register with the date on the check but subtract it immediately from my balance. Although the money is not yet spent, it will be so it doesn't matter when I enter it.

I think she is ensuring that the younger students will be there for all their lessons. She is going to University for extra classes, but since those checks are post-dated, she cannot use them right away. It would be also confusing to me, because if I had a bunch of checks with different dates, I could not deduct them all on one day as that would bring a negative balance. And of course, if the check was a for the 2nd of Oct, I would not use a check with a number directly after a check for Sept 2.

I don't think it is exactly legal to post date checks. The check will be honored if it is taken to the bank even before the date... the bank will not hold it. I have a doctor who will hold a check until you tell them to deposit it... that works and is very honest. If you say hold until Tuesday of next week... the doctor is willing to have it held and then deposited to help you out.

That was what I was going to say. If you write a post dated check, it doesn't mean anything. You can take a check dated a year into the future to the bank and the bank will accept it then and there. I'm not sure about the legalities of writing them, but I wouldn't want to take a chance.

I do not like post dated check and that is because I like to have the checks in sequence that same as the dates. Most of the trouble is when I write a heck for a certain date and they wait until they get a whole lot of checks from everyone else before depositing them. That is more dangerous as one would spend what he or she does not have.

We are not writing in words "date"in the postdated cheque. So any man can change some dates say 1 to 11 or 12 ,2 to 21,22,23 which we cannot at first sight cannot find it. Also some persons handwriting will be confusing. So the cheque itself is confusing for some dates

We do write the date in the post dated check, but we are also estimating how many checks come before it and if there is an unexpected one coming before then that it would be confusing. I do not think the handwriting would matter, because most banks have a hand id card and even though the person's handwriting may change a bit, the bank can understand.
What if the date is 11, they cannot change it to 1 unless they erase the one and even that would be detected.

It is the balancing I hate. I know what it was like before I got the software program that I use for finances. I often wondered whether I had already cleared the check or not. But now I am worried about keep;ing thing in order.

There is only one thing I write checks for and that is my rent. I haven't written a check for anything else in probably the last 10 years, I don't think. I don't know too many people that use checks anymore.
I write out 12 post dated checks every December for my rent for the following year. That way I don't have to think about it every month, paying my rent. I mail them to my landlord and he just gives them to his accountant and everything is taken care of. I don't have to think about it or worry about it for another year.
Other than that I haven't written out a check in years. I pay all my bills by phone through my bank and when I send money for a gift to my granddaughter I just put it into her bank account. I can't seem to think of a single other thing I would maybe write a check for.....
Cheers my friend,
Chris

I do write checks for my church tithe and for my offering plus there is a charity where they only accept checks. I do write checks for my singing lessons as I do not like to carry cash about. I tend to spend if I have any money in my pocket, whereas with credit cards, I have to take out the card, put it in the machine, and I early hate people in front of me counting money.
If I just had one business to give checks too, it would be easier. ButI do like to do things in order. That is my problem.

I really only write one check a month. That's for the rent. More often then not it's post-dated. Not by much, but I do have to post-date it depending on where certain dates fall. This ensures my rent is paid on time, while securing the money in my checking account since I only get one check a month. So I don't take a gamble on my bills, especially the rent/water. Yup. I played the game years ago. I'd much rather not play it again if I don't have to.

If it was just that check for the singing lessons I would not mind., but there is the tithes and the offerings and that charity. Most of my bills are paid online. I wish they would allow debit or credit card for the church expenses and sometimes I wish my singing teacher accepted paypal, but she does not.

I like to keep things in chronological order and it even bothers me when I write a check and date it the day I write it and they do not deposit it until weeks later, so think how confused I would be by a post dsted check that I do not know if they will put it into the bank weeks afterwards or in some case, put it into the bank the week before the date I wrote there is an NSF fee that compuunds because of the other debits.
