Does it annoy anyone when teens (I'm one myself) use text langauage and all of these strange abbreviations and words like yew(supposed to be you) and dat(that)etc? It annoys me and I think it's starting to affect our english langauge skills.

Monkey see and monkey do. I have to resist sometimes and make the effort to use something that is readable but I am, I must admit a terrible speeler. Humm. Yeah, it is annoying but sometimes I can not help it but I am trying to be better. It is habit forming.

Sure is habit forming if you are around it constantly. I hate it and really try to spell right and all, but like anything...you adapt to your surroundings. But it will come back to bite you...I posted on down here a response to this discussion...check it out. It comes back to bite you!!!

I hate that! And I hate texting. it is like we have to learn a new language just to talk to each other! And now... not only is it in texting that letters are used to abbreviate words...but they are becoming used as SPOKEN words! I mean... how many times have you heard someone say "OMG"... instead of "oh my gosh" (or god if you choose)? It is disgusting. Speak words. DOn't abbreviate life!
My daughter is a police officer. She also a texting queen....never talks on the phone...just texts...1200 or more a month! One day when she was writing up the reports from the days work, she went back to proof read what she had written before turning it in...and noticed on every report she had done...she had abbreviated words or used some kind of "deletion shorthand" on all the reports she had just done. She had to go back and redo them all! WHy? INstead of writing the words, she wrote the shorthand/deletion way. Mispelled words like "could" is "cld". Leaving the silent letters off the end of words like "gav" instead of "gave". Shortening words with double letters like "leter" instead of "letter". She shocked herself not only that she did it, but that she did it and didn't even know she was doing it! But after having to rewrite about 12 reports, she made sure she "detexted" her thought waves before doing the reports.
I text my GD (11) and I make sure I don't mispell words cause she is learning spelling all the time and she is going to learn what she is taught. If she is taught to spell words wrong for fun (out side of school) then she is going to mispell them when it is on school work.
I hate texting but do it to keep in touch with my daughter...and as much as I hate it and try to spell right, I find even me...doing the short cuts and deletions. YOu tend to phase into your surroundings.
So yes.. I think this text language is effecting our writting and verbal skills. I have seen the proof!

When texting I don't mind when people use abbreviations like OMG or TMI, but I hate it when they use "yew" for "you" and things like that. At least use somewhat proper english. Sometimes I can't even understand what people are saying when they use all that slang in their messages. It is annoying trying to figure out what they are trying to say.

Computers make it easier to write so you don't need to write shorthand. I can type words faster than I can write in cursive. But writing "yew" instead of "you" makes no sense at all since both use the same number of letters. I don't see the cool factor either. Since when is it cool to look ignorant? I do understand texting. It cost money to send messages on your phone and Twitter only allows a certain amount of characters. I think it is okay to abbreviate some words. Is "dat" really text language? I don't think you are annoyed by text language but rather annoyed by urban slang.

Yeah it is ignorance! well said! texting yes, its understandable when there is limited characters and abbreviating some words are fine hmm yes urban slang is probably what I am annoyed at. I just couldn't think of the right term. When someone substitutes a slang word with a word that has the same amount of letters just makes me want to scream like the example I used - yew. Also some people try to abbreviate so much that it doesn't make sense.

Being a teen myself I must say there is a time and a place for this crazy texting lingo. With schol starting back up, I have notice many individuals abbreviating there school assignments. Well this might be easier, I don't think it should be considered an exceptable way of communicating, especially to teachers. On the other hand, in my opinion, I believe abbreviating is what texting on a cell phone is all about. I think if that's what a person prefers while texting, it should be accepted. But remember, there is definately a time and a place!

hi:)
I also don't want using abbreviations, but my friends use it a lot, I still prefer typing my words completely, I noticed that it really affect how my friends spelled the words, like they don't know sometimes whats the right spelling because of using too much abbreviations... and much worst if they used the other language called jejemons... no offense but My gosh it really annoys me.

hello,
When I am addicted to text I usually use that kind of text language to abbreviate because if I write in two page I will pay 2 as it was. So, I use those because it will makes me shorten my text. right? I am just being practical I am not using it just for belong. I just use it because I need it.

Certain types of "chat speak" or "text talk" bothers me. Things like misspelling words or using numbers in the place of letters.
I have to admit, I used to use type like that a couple of years ago, mostly typing u, 2 and ppl. The most I do occasionally now, is type "b/c" instead of because. Also I use acronyms like LOL, LMBO and BTW.
