I love to help people out a lot, also where I work I constantly see homeless people so I usually go buy a water bottle and a sandwhich from 7-11 and give it to them, when I give it to them they always say thanks and start eating it right away, but last week I gave this man a sandwhich and some water and he threw it down and said I want money, of course I didn't give him money because 1- he was ungrateful and 2- you don't know if he's an alcoholic or a drug addict and your giving him money to support it. If they were really poor they would take the food and be thankful. That's why when I see a homeless person I always give them food, What do you do?

Hi, bluegemini10. I have given one homeless man money a couple of times. I don't think that I would give them money all of the time. If they have asked me for a lot of money, I would probably not give it to them. This homeless man was very rude, he could have at least taken the food that you have given to him. This will make a person not want to give a homeless person anything because of their mean actions.

I agree with you that if they were really poor, they would take the food and be thankful. I'd give a dollar to those asking for a little help, but I'd rather give food. Every time I give out food (and I wish it were more often that I usually do), I get more grateful smiles and a more heartfelt thank you.

I donate online to organizations that I know are helping out people who really can't afford to pay for food or a roof over their heads. Sometimes when I see homeless people on the street I give them money too. But there have been cases where people pretend to be homeless and go around begging for money. Then one day you see them superbly-dressed and coming out of a hotel, where it turns out they've been staying for a long time. My mother also told me of how someone once came to the house and begged for some money to eat. So she gave him a banana since we had a lot. Then he started shouting at her saying a banana won't make him full and that she should give him money instead so he could go buy some tea and bread at a cafe. I really do feel that if people are genuinely hungry, they would take any food, especially if they know it is still edible. You would be so grateful to get some food that it probably wouldn't occur to you to ask for money.

the disadvantage of giving beggers anything is that they become lazy n unwilling to work or even think about it. so think again.

I don't usually give homeless people anything. It is a good idea to give them food and water. I can understand you not wanting to give money, you don't know what they will do with it. I wouldn't give anything to someone who was so ungrateful and seemed to expect help. One time when I was getting a new roof my ex got a homeless guy to help. That is my only experience with unfortunate people. We paid him for all his work and he seemed grateful.

I also give homeless people food. Im a student so any lunch that I didnt eat I give away. Theres a friendly, funny and quite clever homeless guy at the traffic lights in town that I give food to. He's very entertaining, especially when you've had a long day. And he isn't a pest or annoying or anything. He likes making things out of cardboard and other materials :)

Hi bluegemini10, there are some elderly persons like hanging around the local nearby food court. From their appearance and clothing I know very well that they are not homeless people and most probably killing time and earn pocket money from the customers eating here. They refuse to accept any food I buy for them but ask for penny. Since then I never like to bother about them but concentrate in my food. There is only a man without his right hand who is in his early sixty will say thank you and receive the take away food happily I buy for him. I can see him shows up once in a while while I visit the food court sometimes Happy posting and have a nice day

I would choose giving food to the homeless and their basic necessities such as blankets and clothes. If we are talking about beggars I choose to give food. I got this bad experience of giving money to a beggar only to see him doing street gambling by playing toss coin with other guys when he thought I was not looking. In the Philippines if you try to give beggars money sometimes it is the syndicate that handle them who will get the money and left the beggars without nothing.

hello, How nice you are. Honestly, I never give effort like what you are doing because I know they are just doing it for someone. Sorry! I dont have money to give them and I dont have money to buy them foods because for me it is not enough. I know this is not a good reason for not giving them anything. But you know when I have something sometimes I am just shy giving them. I dont know why?

I don't know about you but I tend not to freely buy food or give money to a homeless person I see because you don't how they would react or what they'll do with the money. They might get offended for pitying them by buying them something. I only trust charities who genuinely help homeless people. At my school, we have this program in which we collect food and other items from students and go to this shelter and we give out the food, blankets, clothes and drinks. Here, we can talk to the homeless and give them some tea. =)

I would do the same thing as you, just offering them food not the money. Sadly, most of the homeless people in my country are not the real one, they are all kids, age between 4-14 years old, and are controlled by the crimial groups. The crimial group's behavior is outrageous, they made the kids to be disable. For the reason getting sympathies from the others ,so the kids can beg more money. The kids must beg a certain money everyday, if they can't they will beating-up at night, maybe not allow to have dinner. Child stealing is a serious social problem in China, the government and the citizens try to do something, but now the effect is not obvious.

I do not give them anything at all because giving them money would not help them at all. I aim for financial freedom so that I can have my own foundation, which will really help a person get through ones life, not just for an hour or a day. I also suggest giving to foundations rather than the people themselves.

i personally dont give them anything. i know i should and sometimes i feel bad about not helping them out in their time of need but i can barely afford to care for myself and my farm. i have to do for me and my own before i try to help all the strays. also, now a days you never know who really is a homeless person in need of some help or just a bum trying to get some cash for free food. i constantly argue with myself that if they didnt really need help they wouldnt stand there in the heat of the day begging but people now a days are just so stupid and untrustworthy. i always think of about this song called "what if Jesus comes back like that." in the song it even mentions what if Jesus comes back as homeless man just to see where our hearts are at. I assure you my heart is in the right place i just have to be able to care for my own before i help others.

try to make a conversation first, it pretty much helps you get an idea of what kind of person you're talking with. I'm not talking about a long and interrogating conversation, I mean a couple of words. This helps me a lot and then I can decide what to do.
