I heard that there was a proposal to turn the current 5 day working days to 4 working days instead. From 8 hours to 10 hours per day. There are a lot of pros and cons to this and I'm curious on what you have to say about this. Please share.

I wonder why they still have to tamper with what we have been used to when there are more important things to tackle, I think what they should focus on is to increase wages, encourage Filipinos to work more hours but to get compensated handsomely for those who opt to be industrious and do more work, get paid if you want to do overtime or choose to work on the weekends, this would better peoples lives because their incomes will increase and it would also be good for business because it would increase production output. Again the worker should be given the choice, at the state we are right now, we have a lot of catching up to do in terms of productivity.

This is a breather actually from all the corruption issues being that's being investigated by the senate. Those investigations that seems to be endless and yet not seeing a single person behind bars is getting tiring and I think we need those three days straight day off to cool our heads. I think suggestion a 4 day working day is more feasible than asking for a salary increase if you ask me. But then, it seems that malacanang has turn it down already citing that the reason being provided is not compelling enough.

louievill your idea is lovely, if we work in an ideal world where the rich and the business owners don't care about revenue. I'm an employee as well but I can see the reason why local companies don't increase the salaries of employees. If the purpose of the business owner is to just help his employees, then he wouldn't have started a business. He would have started a foundation. If you're expecting to raise the salary of an elevator operator, do you think it's justified? do you think it's worth paying an elevator operator 12k a month? and as for gov't offices, well if noynoy won't deliver his promise of 0 corruption then we won't see any growth there

@knicnax, remember there is not just one kind of employer, there are ultra rich business magnates who still practice contractual employment, yeah hiding behind the same reason that their companies will collapse if they share their huge profit while in turn expanding abroad and Government is helpless to implement anything cause oligarchy propelled them to their present position or their families are part of the oligarchy itself. I'm not talking about small businessmen like myself and many more I know who try to eke out a living and pay taxes just like everybody else and the only difference is we are just bosses in our own small right, I'm talking about the big fishes, and no not the elevator boy, he just sits there anyway, he's only risk is if there is an earth quake, what I mean is those in the production sector, if they want to work longer then by all means give them the chance and the incentive cause it would be self liquidating and in favor of business in the long run.

I know a few people who have schedules like this and they love it. They no longer have to take time off work for appointments because they have a weekday to take care of things like that. They have 3 days off, time to really go someplace and enjoy themselves. They say it feels like a vacation every week! It was hard at first but after a couple of weeks they got used to it. My sister worked that schedule for a few years but then transferred to another job with a traditional schedule. She says she feels as if she's actually working more, and she occasionally loses work time when she has a doctor's appointment or other chore that involves services not open on the weekends.

@dragon, a 3-day off sounds good. Aside from having more time at home, an employee can save more as far as fares and food expenses in the office is concerned. They will have additional free time on a weekday to have an appointment in some offices that are normally closed on week ends as well. All these at no extra cost to the employer. @knicnax, I think government employees are spoiled to a certain extent. to think that they get their salaries from the taxes of private employees. I don't really have an idea on how the 3 day off came about, i just heard it from a friend and the only statement I got was quoted on the spokesperson that it's not the first time something like this has been proposed but did not prosper and this again is something that malacanang consider as top priority.

Yes. I agree on this 100%. Actually I find it stupid that government offices are closed on weekends and holidays. I mean, come on! It's the only day that people can go to your offices and do what they have to do. This is a very welcome idea, why did malacanang turn it down already? has it passed congress and senate already?

Here most companies will have five working days. As to four working days, I don't think it can work here. As some bosses are already not satisfied to offer more spare time for the employees. I love China

You're lucky, here in the Philippines, only government employees are required to work 5 days a week. In the private sector, there are employees who work six days week or 5 days and half days on a week end. By law we are required to render work 48 hours a week which translates to 6 days in an 8 hour per working day.

it's not actually required to work for 48 hours. AFAIK, it's the maximum number of hours that an employee should work. Any time worked beyond 48 hours is already considered over time

but some companies like where my husband works. even on sundays they still have work. i don't know how it all works in that company but when their manager told them to, they cannot do anything about it. well it's a private company not like my work before in the government.

I think it is a good proposal. I am working 4 days a week and yes, working for 10 hours a day instead of the usual 8 hours. Having a 3 days off is worth the 10 hours working for 4 days than working 8 hours and 5 days in a week. I am not sure how other will take on this, but for me..it is more of advantages than disadvantages. have a good day jaiho®

Well sis for those who have cars and working at home it's good but what about those who commute and experience the traffic while standing on the bus filled smelly people? my brother works 8 hrs a day in the company and yet he goes over time every single time before he goes home at night .

less time - more perssure to wrok
Hello ybong, though i don't have work so probably it won't be affecting me much but the trouble is that with less days of work, this will be put too much pressure on the worker because he or she won't have any more time to take a break and spent time with the family. with that, I don't approve with this. some people need to get over the 7 days and weekend routine. what about people who are working in the day and enduring hours of traffic, how can they ever rest a bit longer if they have no choice but to be sleepless now.

I think the 3 days off will be worth it. Those who live farther will just have to sacrifice getting up early or going home late but then they have 3 days to rest to compensate. It would be like "work hard, vacation mode" every week.

would that do any good? work hard then harder then vacation mode... but still i am more into 5days. but if it's in the law then what can we do but abide.

It's okay with me. I love weekends anyway, though I would prefer the extra day-off midweek. I'd prefer flexi-time or work from home though. It's not applicable to all types of works and companies but for mine it kinda does. There are days when you just can't work and there are days that you wont stop working and that going home is such a chore cause you'll have to stop what you're doing. It's okay if I can work for like hours straight, take a nap at the office and then resume work, just go home after I finish my work, or vice versa, work at home until I finish, and then report for work to deliver what I did.

three days off sounds good, it's just having long week ends every week. Flexi time sounds interesting, I guess you're in the IT profession right? there are times that they seem to live in the office and there are times that you can't get hold of them .

The good thing about IT people is they can work anywhere as long as they have their laptops and an internet connection. Reporting for work is just really a formality or if you need to do something with the hardware. In your case of asking a flexi time, just try and try who knows they'll give in one day.

Haha. You guessed it. I'm working as a technical consultant now. When I read your post, I brought the idea oft flexi time and work from home to my boss again (2nd time to raise this) and I was lightly turned down, again. Oh well. So much for trying!

hi ybong007. i think the effectiveness of a four day work week will depend on the nature of the job and the actual person doing the task. i have had my share of doing four day, five day, and even six day work weeks. each one has its advantages and disadvantages. i actually prefer the four day work week myself as coming into work for ten hours is a norm for me. however, what i like most is having a flexible work schedule which means i don't have to come in on a specific time but rather just have to complete the tasks assigned to me for the week and complete the necessary work hours that the job entails. cheers and happy mylotting!!!

being in the government service, i don't think this is feasible or it will make the service better or worst. we are used to 5 days already for decades, for so many administration that we had. this proposal could be perfect for those who work with shifting time. like sister jaiho mentioned, she is in favor of the proposal, as her work is dependent with the type of job she is in. one question about this proposal, is the overtime pay of the employees who will be affected. another is the adjustment of salary brackets or some other laws will have to be amended, like the salary standardization law. will the business sector go in favor of this proposal?

I think that's the main reason why Malacanang has turned down the proposal. Why change something that is working or If ain't broke why fix it. One of the things being considered is also the overtime since our law specified that employees should only work eight hours and any work done after eight hours is already considered over time where employees are paid per hour in addition to required OT fees as prescribed by labor laws. In short, the changes being proposed means changing some labor laws. I'm not sure if this has been extensively discussed with different business sectors but the fact the it's been turn down for lack of compelling reasons means there's less popular support.

As of the moment, we work from 8 to 6 Monday - Friday. And on Saturday it's 9-12 am. So , i guess, adding an hour a day would be okay, because i do sometimes work until 7 pm. At least, if that is so, then we could have the whole Saturday as free day also. Yipee , that would be nice , really. But i wonder if our company will adapt it.

It sounds really good since it would really be like having long weekends every week. more time for the family and if you have the budget you can go to farther locations and still have enough time to go back home. The only sacrifice is working long hours which means waking up early and going home late but I think most employees do that already. The sad news is, malacanang has turn down the proposal for lack of compelling reasons. maybe if they want local tourism to flourish then this is the way to go. I just hope they realize that if the workers who are the biggest spenders have more time to spare they'll do it on vacations and three days seems good enough to have a vacation on boracay for 2 days, hmmm sounds tempting.

hi, for me i think its better and good to have 5 working days a week and two rest day is enough for me to rest and relax, and staying for 10 hours at work makes me toxic and tired so i still choose the 9 hours work in 5 working days.

I think the ideal working days is 5 days and 2 days off. Too many day offs would be boring too especially if you don't have to money to go somewhere else
