What does the crescent found at the top of a mosque symbolizes? I also wonder why the shape of the crescent is that of the last quarter moon. I am merely curious, I hope our muslim mylotters would not find my question offensive. No disrespect intended. Anyone, pls. do share what you now... thanks...

(1) As far as I know the crescent symbolises a young and rising religion, slowly brightening the night (darkness)
(2) The Muslimss never prayed to a Moon Goddess or Moon God. This was done by the pagan Meccans.
(3) Muhammad (pbuh) was not a caretaker of the Ka'abah as claimed on one website. He was a trader.
(4) When he returned from exile all the idols in and around the Ka'abah were destroyed.

The muslims celebrate eid in the month of september or october. The date of eid is decided by muslim holymen but that is not an accurate date. There is holy month of ramadan during which muslims keep fast for 1 month eating food only in night. During day time they dont eat food or drink water. After one month when last quarter moon is seen , the next day eid is celebrated. So this crescent represents the moon which is seen during night before eid.
