"Swine flu" is the popular name for a strain of a virus which previously was mainly confined to pigs but which changed or mutated in such a way as to enable it to cross species and become infectious to humans.
It's danger and virulence is mainly because it was a 'new' strain for which the human immune system had not built up enough resistance. There is now a vaccine for it which helps to protect people likely to be exposed to it.

I have to wonder about all those flu shots. How the heck does a flu shot become a deterrent to a new strain of flu they had not yet encountered?

It's good that the vaccine is available now. Corona virus is an epidemic as found on twitter explore section and it was pronounced by WHO.

I never get flu shots, I think they're a waste of time and the one I did get decades ago made me sicker than the flu ever would have @oahuwriter
