My boyfriend loves to read books and often tries to get me to get in with him and read books together. I think it's a great idea, but when I actually try to read, I get about two pages in and I get bored or too ancy and I have to quit. I can't read anything and it upsets me, because I'd like to do this with him and my mind won't let me.

I have always loved reading and quickly get absorbed into a book. My husband could never understand how I could read so much but over the last few months he has actually started to read a lot more himself, his reading speed has certainly got faster and he is getting more and more absorbed by the books. I think that it is something that you really need to persevere with and over time you will find that you too will start to enjoy it.

I'm sure that if you find a book that you find interesting you'll be soon catching him up!!

That's how my boyfriend wants it. He wants me to be able to read series with him. But if I do, he get's impatient because it takes me too long, or I just can't focus on it and we don't read together.

Have him read the books he wants to share to you and talk about it as you read. That might still give you a shared experience and make it seem more like you are doing it together. We use to read as a family all the time even when our kids got old enough to read well on their own. We read books above their reading level, but not above their interest level. Of course, if you aren't interested in the content of the series, maybe you just weren't meant to read it together.

I think the best way to get to be interested in reading is to take away the TV. I am speaking from experience here because as a child and even now as a grown up I do not enjoy reading as other people do because I have been addicted to watching TV since childhood rather than reading. I am trying to reverse this but it seems the damage has been done in my case.

For some reason I don't mind reading from the screen as much I do reading on paper. I guess my brain is now wired for screens and not for paper.

As I said earlier, watching too much TV instead of interacting more in conversations with adults and being read to, makes it harder for your brain to develop the verbal skills you need for reading. One of the best favors you can do a child is to unplug the TV and read to him. Actually, you do like to read a bit, or you wouldn't be reading this browser screen on myLot.

that's because you don't like what you're reading. Try books that interest you. Book genres vary from person to person. I love reading action-suspense books. Some people love reading romantic books, some people love comedy books, some love self-help books, some love leadership books, some love economics books etc just find a topic that interests you :)

Just the answer I wanted to post. It's indeed very important to read a book which interest you. So think about the topics that might interest you and go to a library.

Well then, if that's the case, then nothing interests me! Haha I really do try to get the books that I like. I think the problem is that I have ADHD and I can't really focus on the book for more than about ten minutes.

Since you don't like reading books ,i suggest that you watch movies to get to know something.Sometimes the movies also reflect some history stories. But i do still think that nothing could replace reading,it is really important and could cultivate your personality.Good luck.

I watch television 24/7. I really like the idea of the quiet and being able to sit and read a book in the afternoon at a park, but I can't. It bugs me and bores me not to have the TV on, and I think that is part of the problem. I am "addicted" to TV and I can't do anything else but that.

Perhaps you watched too much TV as a child and your brain did not develop the kind of skills needed for reading and concentrating, which takes more complicated brain patterns than being passive. Watching TV is a passive activity and you don't have to think in the same way as when you read and your brain has to decode what you read. Your brain has to translate those symbols on the page into something meaningful to you. Maybe you should relive your childhood with some good picture books. I could recommend a few. They can make you laugh, and even cry, but there aren't that many words to digest. When you can handle good picture books, try the new graphic novels -- comic books for adults. That's a bit closer to TV type action. Good luck.

Hi spaz, as the first commenter have said, it's probably because you don't have any interest on the books recommended to you. I was lucky enough that the first book I read was written by my now favorite author in the world. I suggest you find books that you think are interesting. There are books like those you can never put down. Trust me, they do exists. It's just a matter of finding one. Might I suggest the likes of Sookie Stackhouse novels because they're easy to understand and short so you can probably finish them in half a day if you're intent in reading is peaked.

The ones who love reading books, feeling like they are in heaven while reading it. But the ones who hate reading books, doze every minute while reading it. It happens to me as well. So, first what I did is, I started reading comic books, which I think is rather fun. Then slowly shifted to novels and other kinds of books. Try it out! I bet it will help you :D

I wouldn't get to stressed out over this. Sounds like your just a reader. It's ok if your boyfriend likes to read and you don't. In my relationship, I'm the reader and my husband finds picking up a book a major chore. Since you really like to do this, start by reading something that you like. Once the book gets boring, put it down and walk away. Then go back to it at a later time. Maybe a romance novel as a beginner. Hope this helps.

I am sorry to hear that you get bored whilst you are reading. I love to read, but not all books, mostly I read inspiring Zen books, being a Zen practitioner. Maybe the book you are trying to read is not interesting, and maybe if the subject was exciting to you, you would find it better. I think reading is great because it does expand the mind. _Derek

I would practice and try reading more and staying longer. It is a good characteristic to work on. Being able to set still and keep your mind on reading and not getting ansy could help you later on in life. In jobs where you have to stay ingrossed in one thing for a long period of time. So work at it and you will be happy with the out come.

I have been reading since I learned to read and I was quite young. Later I made book my profession. I´m aa writer in my native language. But I don´t think reading must be imposed. You were not taught to like reading when you were little so it´s difficult to start now, except if you truly get caught in a book. Do other things yo like. Maybe checking things on a computer or watching TV is more interesting for you. My daughter´s baby will get her second book from me for her 1st birthday. The first one was a gift for me also, a chewable one to place in the tub. Her father only reads comics. No problem.

Hi! I hear you as it isn't often that I can find time to read. What kinds of books interest you? Do you go to the library? Try a few books from there...whatever catches your eye and try a variety. Do you prefer classics? Mysteries? Biographies? As for the mind, that may take a little extra work. You may have to tell yourself, 'It's ok to do this now. I am trying something new to connect with my boyfriend better.' If you need to, write down whatever is bothering you in a notebook so you can focus. Good luck!

Perhaps you have never read a complete book, you cannot pretend to like something you have never done, or pretend to do something you actually don't like. Reading is an amazing thing, there's no time to get bored when you have a chance to read a book you actually love. I wish I had more time to read books I actually love :( Anyways, if you've got the free time and the chance, never hesitate reading a cool book.

I have loved to read since before I first went to school. I practically taught myself, with some help from my mom and dad. Mom read to me all the time and I learned that books could take me into different worlds and help me learn things I wanted to know. I couldn't wait until I could read all by myself and not have to depend on Mom for my story fix. I have not stopped reading since, except when I'm so busy writing I don't have time to read. Since this is not your story, I would suggest you start over with books as if you are a child again. Go to the public library and look at the picture books until you find one hat intrigues you with its pictures. Some of these books are really for all ages. Some famous ones are The Giving Tree and Love You Forever. Read books by Patricia Polacco, which are based on her life experiences but are very short and full of pictures that are beautiful. Read Fritz and the Beautiful Horses. I'm sure I've left some of my favorites out, but if you look around, you may discover some good ones on your own. You could also read graphic novels that look like comic books but are written for teens and young adults. They are closer to television than a regular novel.

I love reading and I love books. Have you just turned to reading? If this is so then it's probably still fairly new for you and you are not used to it and it's very easy to become bored with the activity itself. I think it's a good idea to start slow and read however many pages you can read and then put the book aside, grab a cup of tea and then resume your reading. You shouldn't feel pressurised in any way though. Reading is my life and I love it so much. I tend to escape into a good book and it takes me places beyon the imagination. Good luck with your reading. Andrew

I think you just need more practice reading, and reading something you enjoy. I love reading too, but I can't read for long due to my eyesight not being the best. I have to wear magnifying glasses in order to read and they kind of cause eye strain too.. I need new glasses.. and then maybe I can read better. You might not like reading aloud that much.. not sure if that was what you were going to do with your boyfriend... but I can read much faster when reading silently than trying to read aloud.

Maybe you don't find the author who can wake your interest to read. In the USA there are great writers like as Allan Poe or John Steinbeck. Both have wrote terrific stories and many of them are short. I think you should try to read at first little stories, but they should be well wrote. If you start to read a thick and long novel you will need a long time to finish it to read and maybe you could lose the interest. Look for a nice book, with good paper and not so little type size at the bookstore and enjoy your reading.

I do think that maybe you are not interested in the books your trying to read. If you do find a book that you are interested in and still can't focus enough to get through the book, maybe you should try to see if they have it on CD. That way you can read along with the CD or at least listen to the story. Or if the book isn't on CD maybe your boyfriend can read it out loud to you. That way you get to share the experience with him.
