Welcome to the Red Eyes and Sniffy nose Club! hahaha There a way of reducing the tears it draws, peel the onions and pop them in a bowl of cold water for some time or you can keep them in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes. That does reduce the discomfort. Also cutting onions root side up first also makes some difference!

You are welcome :) There is another funny tip but I think no one would want to try it. It is said that if you keep a few peels of the onion on your head, they will draw the pungent gases to them and not bring tears to your eyes. I never found if it works because whenever I bend my head even a wee bit, the peels fall off! :) Probably if we find a way to keep them on, they may work :)

I actually remember my grandma always telling me that but I didn't even mention it here because I still laugh about it.

I just usually light a candle nearby. The flame draws the gas released by the onion to it. Water can also absorb gas from onion so it is good to wash the onion before slicing. Some say they just wet their face too. And you can always wear glasses. :))

Possibly I am NOT as sensitive as you...but, I always keep my onions in the fridge (I know it's not necessary) but I do find a tremendous differnce if they are cold. In comparison, try one refrigerated for some time, versus one that is room temperature. There is something hankering at the back of my mind regarding the metal of the knife...but I can't remember, try knives of different composits! I will try and remember. Have a great day!

My dear friend, I am SOOOOO glad this little suggestion helped. I knew it worked for me, and they don't take up much room in the fridge. I just always keep a couple in there...use one, replace it! I've tried the water trick, and find this more effective. I, too use a lot of onion, as it is a "good health" food! Take care, I've enjoyed this discussion. Cheers!

Hmmm...I noticed that the most common remedy is to cool the onion first. I think I'll go with that because it's also the most easiest thing to do, thanks so much

How do you chop the onion when you do? What I mean is how are you position based off of the onion and how are you doing your chopping? Let me know your basics there and I will see if I can help with ideas.

Well, I think the normal position? on the kitchen table, bending a little bit so I can see clearly what I'm chopping and then I start the preparation by removing the skin, then chop it in half and then chop them again lengthwise or sometimes mince them depending on what the recipe requires.

OK, I kinda thought so LOL. If you are good enough at chopping, don't lean in, let your fingers be your guide.you don't have to see the onion to cut it. I will recommend starting with the root side up, I'm not really sure why it seems to help honestly but it does. If you are not that good of a chopper I recommend soaking your onion in cool water after peeling it for maybe 5 minutes, it should take some of the effect off but probably not all. Another possibility, if it really bothers you that much, is finding a surgeon mask that has a plastic splashguard attached for covering the eyes. I hope you find some of this info helpful.

Am not good in cooking but my mother used to ask me to prepare vegetable, spices and etc. before cooks our meal. I am also one of the victims of that little onions, but mom told me to soak or just wash it with water before chopping it, and it really works! Try it!

lol... I must be the lazy one when it comes to onions... I chill 'em in the fridge and then I always Always chop an extra one which I then freeze in a ziplock bag... thus less tears. I also will cut my onion in half and let it soak in water for a bit. Either or I still cut an extra one to freeze for later use. Having a box of kleenexes handy doesn't hurt either :)

Hi Amfyre, No, you're not lazy. You're organized instead, because you prepare your cooking need ahead of time and I think that's neat. Yeah, I've noticed too that the most common remedy or strategy it to cool them first so I'll go with that, thanks

Organized or not, it sure comes in handy...especially if company is coming and I want to keep my make-up on and mascara in place :) Then that frozen onion in a ziploc bag sure comes in handy! :D The onions freeze easy and if anyone has IBS it cuts down on the natural gas and bloating from the onions. So I guess its a dual purpose freezing the onion;)

Hi, whengcat. Onions make me cry too. It is best to always cut them up under cool running water. This is what I usually will do to keep from getting all teary eyed. I have also stuck my face into the freezer after cutting up an onion, because my eyes were very watery and full of an irritating sting.

I think I tried putting match sticks to my mouth before. The head is outside while half of the body of the match is inside my mouth. The head part absorbs the substance that makes our eyes teary. I think salt is also okay. But be ready when someone caught you doing the match thing. :)
