Capturing audio drirectly from the sound card ???

Hi could anyone please tell me how to capture audio directly from the sound card ?? I tried some programs but they all record the voice coming out from the speaker(using my microphone) which means that background environmental sounds are also recorded :( Isnt there a way to record directly from the soundcard by playing the audio and pluging in my headphone ?? Would appreciate some help !! Thanks a lot :) !!
