If the dishes cannot be eaten up in the dinner, will you throw them away?

Yesterday, I visited my Uncle, and had dinner with his family.
As a guest, I was warmly welcomed, my aunt(my uncle's wife) prepared more than 8 dishes for the dinner. Though there were six people having dinner together, we still can not eat them up. If that happened in my home, my mother will keep the leftovers in the fridge and warmed them up for the next meals. But my aunt put them into the dustbin, for she thought it is not health to eat leftovers .
As I was not in my home, so I do not say anything about it. After return to my home, I talked it with my mother. Though from some TV programs, Both my mom and me know vegetable is usually not good for health after keeping more than 8 hours, I still think throwing them away is a kind of waste. We should make full use of the things especially the food.
What is your opinion on the leftovers?
How do you treat them?

In my view, in this case it's your aunt who made the mistake. The mistake she made is not that she put the leftovers into the dustbin, but that she prepared too many food for you. I understand that in tradition preparing more food than actually needed was a way to show welcome. But in the modern time it's obviously out-of-date which only results in waste. If there's only a little leftovers, putting them in the refrigerator is a proper way to deal with. But just as experts said, refrigerator is not safe box. Eating food which is kept in refrigerator for more than one day is not good for the health of people. So calculate the amount in advance and eat up all the food is the best choice.

I always prepare too much food not because it shows a welcome, but because I am afraid there won't be enough. Not everyone will necessarily like everything so I have plenty and a variety. I also offer my guests to take some home if they wish and the rest of the leftovers we will eat sooner or later.

I save them for leftovers though my teenagers do not really like leftovers. I feel that most times the food actually tastes better the next day. Sometimes I make the leftovers into a new dish so they won't know - lol.

When I was a teenagers, I do not like the leftovers too. But after becoming a adult, I find I can accepted them now. Maybe the hardness of life make me know that I should prize everything. But make full use of the leftovers seems a tradition in my family. My grandma never throw any food away even the spoiled food. As the remember of great Chinese famine during 1960-1962, making her fear of lacking food, and make her never throw any food any.
When I was young, my grandma always using leftovers to prepare a hearty chowder for the next meal. And that was really delicious.

Your auntie must be so moneyed that she does not mind wasting food at all. But I also see so many rich people who don't throw away leftovers. If indeed your Auntie would not like to eat leftovers then I think she should give them away to neighbors or to people around who might be just starving. Oh what a waste. I never waste food like that. Yes,it's not good to eat leftovers if you did not place them in the fridge but if you keep them properly then I find nothing wrong with leftovers. Well vegetables of course should be eaten right after cooking. I don't eat leftover veggies either, so I make sure I cook just enough. But other left-over foods, I always re-heat then let them cool before keeping inside the refrigerator so that they remain safe for eating the next time around. We just have to re-heat.

I never waste the leftovers. I carefully keep them in the fridge and use then in the other days. this habit not only save some money. it save some time also. for this purpose only we spend some money on fridge and electricity. If we through the leftovers in the bin no need to have a fridge.

Wow I don't know anyone who throws away leftovers. LOL I LOVE leftovers. They can be used for so many different things or just as a snack the next day or even the same day.
Maybe her refrigerator wasn't working properly and that is why she threw it away???

as for me, i do not throw out leftover. since you can still make use of it and cook it to another dish. sometimes leftovers for any meal goes to our dogs or even pigs. we do that here in our country. in that way leftovers would not go to waste as it has been used and consumed by other living creatures.

I always make use of leftovers, up until the point of tastelessness and/or spoilage.
Many foods, especially soups and stews, taste better the next day.
And many ingredients of other meals can be turned into soups or stews, or used in other ways.
Freezing is also a good option for most foods.
We should absolutely be good stewards of the food we have and, as you say, make "full use" of them.

I don't throw anything away. I put the left overs in containers and put a cling wrap over them and deep freeze them. I will take out whatever I want the next day and steam it but not boil it again. We have been trained not to waste food even though we can afford to throw the stuff away.

We certainly do not. It's economically and environmentally bad.
Life is hard and food costs a lot. If you can't finish the food, don't make a lot. Wasting food will hurt your budget. It also hurts the environment.
Take for example, beef. If you throw away beef, you wasted a lot already. You wasted the grass that could have supplied the earth of more oxygen, you wasted the cow, which produces a lot of toxic gases when they fart (cow farms are a huge contributor in global warming because of cow farts). And that's just cows, how about the water, the oil, the other ingredients you wasted. Everything has a carbon footprint, making our world weaker day by day and you just wasted the food.
At home, we don't throw away food. Left overs are placed in separate containers and placed in the fridge. We just reheat them on days when we feel to lazy to cook

If there is a considerable amount left and it is meat we keep it and reheat the next day to eat. Otherwise, we give it to our dogs and cats. At least we saved from dog food.

At my place, we always keep the leftovers. We believe it is a sin to waste food and some people do not even have leftovers to eat. So might just well give a second thought as to what to do when there is food left. I guess that if some people do not like leftovers instead of throwing them away, they could give them to some needy people.

We put them in containers in the fridge. They seem fine the next day for lunches.

Hi, dandan07. No I will not throw any food away, I will still eat any leftovers that can be still eatable for the next day and possibly for the rest of the week too. Your aunt spent so much of time preparing and cooking this meal, if the food is still fresh then she should save it for the next day. So many people in this world is starving, and if they were at your aunt's house, they would have been so grateful to be able to have something to eat. I know that you could not voice your opinion because this was not your home. That is how I am too. I may not say something to a person, but I surely don't agree with what they are doing either.

The only reason to rhrow away food is if the wrather is very hot and you don´t have a refrigerator. In a fridge, food can be kept for quite a time. And some of the food can be placed at the freezer too. I use ALL leftovers. I could not live as well as I live if I threw away food or left the light on when I´m not in a room. My bills are low (groceries and energy) because I watch them.
Take care!

Not at all, I always use leftovers to make other meals or freeze them. Most leftovers make wonderful soups or casseroles; food is far too expensive and scarce to throw it away when it is still perfectly safe to eat. However you must always remember when using leftovers that those leftovers need to be as good, and as safe, as the original meal itself.
You shouldn't leave food out where temperatures are right for bacteria to grow and the taste of the food to get stale. The sooner you store leftovers, the better. While the food is at room temperature, approximately 72 degrees F, it is in the temperature danger zone of 40 degrees F- 140 degrees F. This is the temperature range in which bacteria can grow. The cooler temperature of the refrigerator, 35 degrees F to 40 degrees F, slows down metabolic processes and therefore slows the growth of harmful bacteria. Also remember to keep leftovers safe and tasty by refrigerating or freezing them soon after the meal is over. The food safety recommendation is to refrigerate leftovers within two hours of when the food is put on the table. In today’s economic climate using leftovers is an excellent way to save money and avoid waste.

Just as what your mother do, I also put our left over food in the ref and warm them on the following meals. But it only happened sometimes because usually, we have no left over because what is left during the meals were given to our pet dogs.
