To me, I think the cell phone is a must in today's life. No one can live without it for you have to keep in touch with people through it.
But in my hometown, if a poor family has a cell phone, it is impossible for them to get the lowest life guarantee from the government.
I think it is unfair. If a family can not have a cell phone, life may be harder, for they can not get a job easily without it.
Do you think cell phone is necessary for live?

Cellphone is already an indispensable tool in the modern world, especially in big cities. As we all know, information is the most valuable element in the modern society. And cellphones help people contact others swiftly and acquire the useful information. Without it, people may lose many opportunities. In the past several years, owing to the inflation, the price of many kinds of goods has increased a lot. Only the telecommunication expenses has reduced obviously, which to a large extent facilitates the communication of people. The policy made by the government of your hometown sounds short-sighted. It should offer those poor people cheap cellphones and telecommunication subsidies to help them live on their work instead of rely on the minimal assurance provided by the government.

Yes! For instance, if I am not at home but someone wants to talk to me urgently (eg, job interview), he would still be able to get in touch with me. If I need to make an emergency call and there is no public phone nearby, the cell phone will be useful.

I'm about to tell you a big secret...no one in my family has a cell phone! *Gasp.* We only have an old fashioned landlines. I guess this makes us tech fossils! :)
I would say that a cell phone is nice to have. You are not restricted to one location when you want to make a call. Furthermore you can text - something most land lines can't do. If one has a touch type cell phone one can even access emails on the go. However I wouldn't go so far as to say a cell phone is an essential part of life. Food and water and shelter are essential. A cell phone is a great help, but it is possible to live without it. My family is proof of that.
(A quick note though: I don't rely on our land line. I have software on my laptop that lets me use it like a cell phone. So I guess in a way I have have a giant, hard to carry around cell phone.)
