It is not very fun to have a Windows with no update possible...
He has to reformat his disk. But he should ask himself this question : Why reinstalling a pirated Windows when Linux is free, has no virus, may run 80% of Windows software, and is available in more flavors than a human being is able to test ?

How many flavors do human beings come in, Top, and how many have you tasted?

Have you used Linux recently rbose ? Saying that Linux is not "user friendly" was true in the 90's, but no more today. A large number of software are available on both Linux and Windows at the same moment like the Firefox browser I am using, and free software like Open Office have replaced today in administrations of my country Microsoft Office. What is true is that there are many variant of Linux and a life would not be enough to know all well, but nobody needs to know how Linux works internally to use Linux.
A pirated version of a product where you can lose your data due to a black screen is a time bomb, and I can't understand how your friend can use such a dangerous thing.

You do not always have to reformat Windows to reinstall, and sometimes if you do a reinstall without reformatting, then you can save most if not all of the information that was stored on the hard-drive. Do not try to do a fix, though, do an actual reinstall.

Oops! That's why you don't play with pirated versions of Windows. When updating, Windows will certify it is legit. Formatting and reinstalling the bogus version won't do any good. The same thing will happen.
Tell your friend the ONLY WAY OUT is to get his own Windows.

You're right PurplePeopleEater, about shutting off updates, but you're messing with another can of worms there. Updates are important and many of them address security concerns. I am not saying that something bad will happen, but if you use a pirated Windows, be prepared for the worse to happen.
