I recently have alot of additional readings to read for my new semester for many of my modules. Lecturers post those links online. I have tried reading those journals online however, after a while, my eyes gets really tired and it's painful to continue reading. Furthermore, reading online makes it difficult to make notes and to highlight as well. I personally think it would be much more convenient to print it on hardcopy and then read it from there. However, i am worried about the environment, don't really want to waste paper and my ink (cost money)!!! What would you suggest me to do? To just print all those notes or just hand in there and to read it online? PS: I have lots of readings. No just a couple of readings, but lots and lots of them!

Personally, I would prefer to print the readings. I know that it's not doing the environment any good but I think I would rather protect my vision than to worry about that.

Hi huilichan, thank you for reminding me that it is much more important to protect our eyes than to worry about the environment. It can definitely come in second.

You are most welcome!:} There are many other ways to protect (do sth for) the environment whereas you are only given two eyes to see this beautiful world. So do take care of your vision.:)

I believe reading offline is better. Me to I read a lot, both: online and offline. I think the best way to read is tablets, like Ipad. I think there you can tausands of pages and there is better environment for your eyes. You are right the best way to read is on piece of paper, hard paper. There we speak about forest, and trees. I believe people over the world need to write, read only important things on the paper and even online. We waste a lot of words and time for nothing. We need to expore deeper in our minds, souls, to find only important and useful things. I believe that educational sistem waste a lot of time, energy, knowledge ... for nothing. I believe that the very useful economy will be better to make it in your minds first, then on the paper, or online. Finaly you are right: is better for your healthy, for your eyes to read on hard paper, then you can read on tablets and the last is online, on the screed. The price is in oposite part. Cheaper way is to read online. So I use to read online a lot. There are very very many information. Is up to you...

" I believe people over the world need to write, read only important things on the paper and even online. We waste a lot of words and time for nothing. ..." catamari ..lol that was very wise but not so practical. I think you have a great idea and wish everyone could follow your advice and only write 'important things' but then we would have to decide what is improtant I think there would be a lot of diagreement there.

hello stary1. You are right. There is very hard to decide what is important. I think the world has need leaders who can work for people, don't work for themself. When there will be only one leader in the world words will be very few and important. For that we need to find another mood to look at goods around us. Maybe sound like SiFi. :). Ok, myself I don't know exactly what is important and what is not. But could be a very nice dream for us to have only good words, useful, important for each others. Practical is impossible if we don't think about that, if we don't concentrate for that. I think if all of us will think deeper, will look deeper in our hearts and listen carreful around us people will find something important and useful, and think for each word which we use. Maybe is not easy, but sure will make us happyier than in the past or present. Who knows?

Hi dream! That's also one of my major problems. I also have a lot of reading materials for my classes and I hate to print them all because I don't want to waste paper. But I prefer hard copies of papers that I need to read so most of the times, I recycle papers. I use those papers with a blank back page so I can at least conserve paper. I agree with you that it's easier to highlight and make notes in a hard copy so as much as possible, I print them. And most of the times, if I read in the computer, I just end up surfing the net.

Yes. I always feel guilty after printing so many stuff. Similarly, i do prefer reading on hard copies too. It's just so much easier. You are right, I should go and dig up all of my used paper and see whether they have blank pages behind. At least, I will play a part in saving the earth. Definitely, when we read online, there are just too many temptations and then we'll never get to finish up our work. Just out of curiosity, what are you currently studying?

hello, I think for you? you can print since your eyes are hurting to much when you are reading through computer. right? I know how expensive it was when you are paying for ink and paper but for your benefit it is much better to pay for more than to damage your eyes. alright?

Yes. You are really right. it would be better to spend some money printing the materials rather than to hurt my eyes. It would be a huge problem should my eyesight be affected. I am already wearing spectacles with a degree of 600 on both eyes and i definitely don't want it to worsen.

Well not only can you get some libraries to allow you to recycle and use both sides of the paper but also they have places you can recycle paper as well. I think they even pay you too.

Well if I were you I would read it online. This is because I have gotten used to it and It does not bother me much. However seeing as you prefer to read from a paper It, as you said, would be more convenient for you to print it. You now have to weigh it out. Which one is more important to you? Can you afford it?

It never seems that i will get use to it. Because after some time reading online, i eyes gets really tired. Also, i like to do interactive reading, where i will highlight or even write some notes by the sideline when reading. Reading online makes it very difficult for me to do these things. I am able to afford it, but feel quite guilty everytime i print lots of things on paper.

More and more journals and research material today are only available online. In fact, I was told by my university librarian that in the coming years, the university library will be spending most of their money on buying subscriptions for online journals so there will be less books available on the shelves. If you want to avoid eye strain, just close your eyes for 5 minutes after about 30-40 minutes of looking at the computer screen. There are software available for you to highlight and add sticky notes to ebooks these days. And any research material can be converted to pdf (which is considered to be an ebook format) by "printing to pdf" using freeware such as CutePdf. They also sell ebook readers which you can carry around with you.

Well, I too have many readings and I have decided to print them on paper and waste money on paper and ink. The main reason is my eyesight. I was diagnosed since puberty of eyes with astigmatism. As I grow older, I grew more worried that my astigmatism will go worse. In fact, I dread to go the optometrist to get a new pair of glasses becuase I know that my eyes aren't as good as the last time. This doesn't help when my work consists of staring to the computer screen for long hours. So I took the non-economic way of paper and ink. I want to make sure that my eyes get some rest as long as I can manage. I try to cut back on my computer time. I know that it isn't the ultimate cure, I would like to at least know that I'm not abusing my eyes to the worst stage that I can with my work and in my leisure.

Could you do a combination of the two? Read the easier ones online and print out the more difficult ones. Another thing you might want to try and reset the brightness on your computer screen. I find a screen that is too bright gives me eyestranim more quickly. Also remember to take frequent breaks and look away from the sceen periodically. Another suggestion when you are readng and want to take notes or quotes you could just cut and past those parts. There is recycled parer if you are worried and I often use both sides of the paper when I print. Good luck and best wishes..
