Why do some professors have need to scare students?

There is one professor in my school who always reminds me of his authority, and exploits that in all possible ways.
He has need to scare us all the time.
For example, before he enters class he starts walking really fast, slaps door behind him and than suddenly stops, and looks at us like he is going to kill us.
10 seconds later he smiles, but it is fake/sarcastic smile.
But I know that he is actually really weak inside. Once he had a class, and no one showed up on his class, than he cried.
He is about 60 years old, and before work he goes to pub and drinks beer a lot. So I'm pretty sure he is not satisfyed with his life. Is that maybe a reason he scares us constantly?

Hi!
Maybe he is really like that because he can do that to you. I mean, there are people who bully those that are weaker than him. And since he has power over his students, he uses that power at maximum because he does not have any power over any other person or thing.
Teachers do not have to scare students. Sometimes they do, but not too much. There are teachers who only scare students as a strategy to make them study more. But they don't scare their students to the point that he slams the door and any other non-verbal signs of power. Most of the teachers I knew who scared their students only gave warnings that if they don't study hard, they will fail or something like that.

Thanks for the response, but I don't think that is the case because I heard that when we write paper work in his class he doesn't even check it, only looks at the name of the student and than grades it by his older experience with that student.

Professors are always like that. During elementary is the worse. They do not only scare students but they also physically hurt them. Probably, your professor has a serious problem. He might be feeling alone. Maybe, he just want to set up a borderline between him being a teacher and his students. As long as he treats you fair, I don't see any problem with teachers like them. It's just normal.

Well I wouldn't have any problem if he was fair, but he is not.

Hi there Zlokotprk!
I think that some professor scare students because like what you have observed with your professor, to cover up their weakness. Professors have different styles and approaches in teaching but they should never take the rights of their students for granted.

I completely agree, students rights should be main thing for them.

Well, that could be a reason. I think he has a case of insecurity in his life. Well, it is human nature to want authority and power for themselves. Since he is your professor, he thinks that he got the power over all of you and is using it to do "power tripping". Such kind of people who does this are insecure or really have issues with their own identity. They are very excited to have authority and in essence, wants to feel and experience it. Try doing head on collision against them. As you have said, you feel that he is really weak inside. Don't let him terrorize you and bring fear in your lives. Just fight him off if you know that you are on the right side. I think that fear in you should be all in the mind. Try not to think about his antics and get carried away from it.

Thanks for the advice.
But what I don't understand is how can he feel powerful by taking it out on kids?

I think that all your professor wants is to be respected and he thinks that's is the best way to achieve his goal. He probably already tried others ways, but he didn't receive the respect that he think that he should have. Of course that is not the best way, but I already have many teachers like that too.

Yes unfortunately it happens. In my opinion the most part of teacher do that and the reason is that they are frustrated and dump the anger over the the weaker but not hate them, most people tend to do this. The problem is that they are teachers and should set a good example !

Maybe he is not confident of his lives, so he scare others to find something fun.
