Dear friends, if you've ever thought MYLOT, which has members from all over the world to be multilingual ? I must say that in my opinion this would be advantages but also disadvantages. This is because the webmaster who regulate the site should know a huge amount of languages ??to "correct" any discussion, instead of English, which is the main language in the world .. well, good or bad, we all know. I must also specify that a person like me that I'm Italian, it would be much easier to read and comment on articles written in my language. This was just a note said this, MTLOT is a wonderful site, so let's keep it like it is !

I am bilingual with both English and Spanish. I have not given it any thought if myLot should expand to a multilingual site. If they did I am sure it would be way to hard to keep up, as many would come forth and say that why there language is not accepted. In order to do this that means they would have to hire loads and loads of multilingual Admins to be able to sweep the lot daily. Then I suppose myLot could not pay it's members as the Admins must be paid. So I am with you that it should stay as it is because there would be some issues if they attempted even with one other language.

Hi alberello! What I have thought was having a particular interest that myLotters are allowed to speak in their own language. For example, there is an interest "Philippines" where Filipino myLotters and even non-Filipino, discuss things about the country or events or issues concerning the country. It would be great if myLot would allow us Filipino myLotters to speak in our own language in discussions under that interest. If there's an interest "Italy", too then you might also speak Italian there and myLot would not mind. Of course, the disadvantage of this is that myLotters who do not understand the language will not be able to relate or respond to the discussion so that would be less chance for the discussion to get more responses. But it is advantageous to all those who can understand the language because when they fully understand something, they can contribute a lot to the topic and they can express themselves well using their own language.

I too though of such a feeling. Mylot is so great if alone even others could have this chance. There isn't any other site like Mylot. so the administration can think of having a similar site in other languages as a separate entity but with similar features. That would be a great legacy of mylot to multilingual people.

Yes. It would be good for the people who speak that language and who could relate to them.

srjac0902 Interesting idea to have similar sites in different languages. I wonder if there would be enough people to join since so many know Englsh?

If it were made that way, discussions and topics would be dominated mainly by Americans and all those who speak English, Indians and Filipinos because they speak quite good English as well, and we will also be discussing among ourselves because of the large base of not just members but active members. It's possible that it might cause fragmentation (just my personal opinion), so I think it is better this way.

Very true. I'm glad it is versatile with English.

I suppose they could make it multilingual and assign more managers. If someone knows more than one language they could manage more than one group. Personally I think that could become quite consfusing. Don't all languages already have some type of boards to discuss issues in their own language??

i am also bilingual with french and english but had it been multilingual i guess it would have been very diifficult for others to reply to any particular topic and it would be hard to make out whether the particlular discussion sticks to the guidelines ...so for me it is better this way.... i usually find difficulty in understanding some people's english whose native language is not english ...i just hate the notion of mylot being multilingual

I would not be able to read or respond to most people. I only speak and read one language.

Ithink sometimes translations of what someone is saying from language to language can miss the meanings or misinterpret what is being said. With everyone using the same language on the site its "Easier" to communicate what we mean. Also...everyone speaking the same creates a greater sense of community and more participation. I'd be less likely to comment on a response orginally in french, german, chinese, italian, spanish, japanese...as i'd be making sure i was very careful not to misinterpret if its translated and unsure as to what it says if its not.

I think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. (1) Mylot will become less global since the majority of members would have a reduced opportunity to participate. (2) There would be an abuse, where there will be repeat discussions in different languages. (3) Ideas/viewpoints pool will become smaller. Platinum Lounge tried the multi-language approach but it failed to prosper.

I think that there would be many disadvantages about a multilingual site. The staff would have to read discussions in many different languages, and that would make things a lot more complicated. We wouldn't be able to understand the discussions that our friends started if everyone wrote in their own language. When we started a discussion we wouldn't be able to get responses from members from other countries because they wouldn't understand what we wanted to discuss. Those of us who didn't grow up in English speaking countries would be able write faster and easier, but we wouldn't get the chance to practice our English (and earn and learn at the same time )

That is the problem actually. Members have different languages. But since mylot is just in English, I guess a portion of the people and potential members get shooed away. I am just lucky I am familiar with the English language.

The articles read by our mother language are easier to make comments, but as your said,it really makes a big job to the admins here.So never change just keep like this.XD

It would be a lot better if people could write in their own language. (Of course, I could only read the English entries). But when foreigners try to communicate in English, it really sounds terrible. It is one of the things I dislike about MyLot.

english is the best to use since it is the international language. I'm a filipino and english is not my language but I would say I'm comfortable using it. It would be hard to understand any other languages.
