I just watched this TV show with kids between 8 to 12 years old cooking and it amazed me how great they are. I mean, I actually felt I am hopeless in the kitchen.LOL. For the first time, I actually enjoyed a cooking show. Looking back when you were that age, were y'all great cooks? :)

My mom was a single mom and I had to have a fresh pot of coffee ready when she got home from work and dinner at least started. It taught me a lot about cooking. After awhile I started to want to make more complicated things. I am glad I had to do it now.

True! Parents are the greatest influence. My mom used to be a caterer. I remember helping her but I don't remember being as good as those kinds. I still don't think I'm that good. LOL. I still can't do complicated. I'm more into baking. I look at the stuffs the kids prepared and they were 5-star hotel kind.

yes, parents do have great importance and influence on their children as well. good for you, trvl, you did a great job on that. it's hard to learn complicated things and recipes that are too many. well, ur4mae, at least you are trying to be good. there's nothing wrong with it. so, do you bake always?

Cooking is a wonderful skill to acquire. In "olden times" when I was in school cooking class was part of the curriculum.
My mom was a good cook, but I was an observer, rather than a doer when I was younger.
Since my granddaughter was a year old we cooked together. Most children love cooking and easily invest in it because they get to choose dishes they love to eat. It's a science/chemistry and creative arts lesson all-in-one.
Most foods are easier to prepare than people think, especially with partially prepped foods available today like salad greens, shredded veggies, etc.
Children love to create and especially enjoy creating new food combinations and recipes.
My oldest daughter became a capable cook. I must admit the other two tend to shy away from the kitchen, in spite of my tutelage.

Children do take up to cooking but it depends on how they have been oriented into it. Some mothers have a way of doing it - they make it into a fun project. We as kids used to have a session. All neighbours' kids would come over and we would have cooking sessions in the backyard using firewood. It was certainly a great experience.

yeah, i have been following that TV show too. it is simply amazing to see kids nowadays cooking for themselves. i would like to have kids like that. it is wonderful to imagine that kids will prepare our food while parents will simply relax. kids are lucky in today's contexts because they are provided with so much knowledge and skills by the media, parents, and schools. i wish they could make it big when they grow up.

I have never been very good at cooking, but I am determined to learn to be able to cook before I have children, as I would prefer for them to be able to learn to cook from me and also to have a healthy diet themselves while they're growing up because then I would be able to cook nice things for them. My Dad does all of the cooking in my house which meant that my Mum never really learned how to do it so my brother and I were brought up on a diet of chips and other frozen food, which wasn't all that great for either of us to be perfectly honest with you.

hello ur4mae! i think i know the show you are talking about. since you are from the philippines where i do live also. you are talking about junior masterchef, am i right?
well, yes it is really amazing how kids from that age group do knows how to cook very well like an international chef. when i was young, i don't remember being in the kitchen to help my mother to cook. as i grow up, i do help my mother to cook but then it is still her to do lots of it. As of now, i only knew simple dishes and i am not perfect cook as well. It's still our mom who does more of it and she really is good in cooking.
Kids from that show is really amazing. i bet most of them do belong to a rich family who knows food which are hard to cook. from the sound of their recipes or their dish, not all people can relate on what does it taste or how to prepare that. even how does it look and taste like. do you agree? by seeing them, seems like people wants to learn more of cooking. of course people always eat, but we all know not all people have the talent to cook great food.
