My mother is addicted to Korean dramas!

And it's getting on my nerves! There are days when I see her so early in the morning already watching the Korean drama on DVD she bought. This morning I woke up at 6AM and saw her already in front of the tv. Last night she fell asleep watching the darn drama and when I was ejecting the DVD from the player, she woke up and scolded me from doing so. I told her she was already sleeping so I turned everything off! Her DVD collection of Korean dramas are already piling up. There are DVDs with very awful English subtitles and it can give you headaches when you try to understand them (I'm pretty sure the English subtitles are made by Chinese subbers, no offense meant to Chinese). But nonetheless, my mother still watches them day and night. I can't say a word to her because it's just one of her entertainments here at home since she retired and I understand how boring it can be when you're stuck at home. I used to like Korean dramas before and I still watch Korean movies but too much of it really gets on my nerve!!!!

Just give her what she want. Being a retired employee she has nothing to do at home. I also like Korean tele novelas, but I got no time seeing thru DVD as as youve said the translations are awful. After going home from work, I just tuned in the tv view the news, the dramas and those Korean telenovelas. In a way it can help remove stress from work. If you got no work set beside her and join her in seeing those movies, she will like it.

I sometimes join her in watching those movies but I already had too much of it, I can't stand watching for more than 5 minutes.

After watching Korea’s depressing movie, though, I appreciate that there are uncomplicated experiences in our lives precious to be seen in TV or in movies.

I've been addicted to that Korean dramas a long time ago. I'm into Japanese dramas and movies right now. Those are with less romance. But who knows, maybe you're right. I might change tastes again when I grow older.

Yes, that's right. Life would be so overly dramatic if those dramas happen in real life.

Youre still young I supposed and not much interested on those tele novelas. But in movies you like you can stay longer. When you grow older maybe you will have the same style as your mother or maybe not like her but very different. Happy mylotting.

I believe one of my friend's mom got into that phase a few years ago and one of my very few female friends actually is so into watching Korean movies online. I really just don't get it. I mean, I know they have good movies but I just prefer watching the Hollywood stuff and tend to not go for the dramas. I'm more of a comedy person.

I used to watch a lot of Korean dramas, you know. I liked it because the actors are cute, the story is nice even if one of the lead will die in the end, and there's just too much kilig factor. But the last reason was the reason why I stopped watching them. I got too much of it it felt boring. I love Hollywood movies, too! Maybe you can check out my discussions about movies.

I can see that your mom is really addicted to Korean TV series. I am not interested in watching it at all. I like watching American TV series. But as you know, everybody has different interest, so we can't say that ours is the best. At least your mom's retired life seems to be quite busy:) It is not a bad thing for the elders. Life is interesting when it is full. I love China

It's not a bad thing to watch those dramas. What's bad is that she sometimes watch from early morning til late at night.

My daughter loves Korean movies too, but she does limit herself and only watches when she has free time and doesn't watch until dawn. My wife doesn't want to watch them though since she hates reading subtitles... You should discipline your mom since it could be bad for her health..

Hi secretbear. I love Korean dramas and movies a lot. There was a time of my life that I felt so down that I kept on watching the dramas without sleeping for a few days. I slowly manage to recover myself from that stage and go on with my life. Now I only watch them about once a week. I'm not saying that your mom felt down, but probably there is something bothering her. Maybe she felt lonely or have no other activities. You could try talking to her and ask her if she's alright. I hope my suggestions helps.

Hi Dia! I think my mother felt lonely and bored since she just retired. She used to be very busy and stressed everyday and now, she's got no work and all she do at home is house chores. So I guess that's taking a toll on her. She's still adapting to the change, I guess and watching Korean movies is helping her to cope up.

Oh wow. She really is addicted to Korean dramas! She must really like the drama if she doesn't even mind the awful subbing. Maybe if you can help your mother find a new hobby her addiction would decrease? What did she use to do before this when she got bored at home?

Oh well that depends. If she was playing mahjong with friends, then it might have been better as she would've also been socialising instead of just sitting by herself in front of a television. But if she was gambling while playing mahjong and if she got addicted, then it might not be good.

Yes, that's true. Mahjong is really one way to socialize. I don't think my mother is addicted because she only plays mahjong during weekends because her "playmates" are only available on weekends. On weekdays, that's when she wallows with her Korean dramas.

Before she got addicted with Korean dramas, she used to play mahjong a lot. I guess K-dramas is better than mahjong?

I feel the same way about our soap opera's....my friends and coworkers watch them everyday and then discuss them at work. I used to watch them but all the drama got on my nerves. I figured there is enough trouble in the world without getting caught up in fiction...

Thanks for the response, Jill! I think my mother prefers to deal with the fictional drama rather than the real life drama.

Korean dramas are very popular here in China. Many people like to watch them. So it is with my wife, who is so interested in them and is watching every new Korean TV series that can be found. Also I understand what you mean when you mention the English subtitles. A lot of my students do not use English correctly and we would say that it is Chinglish. hehe. Enjoy yourself, secretbear.

I'm sorry I just had to say it William, but the English subtitles are just really terrible! It makes my head ache and it gives me nosebleed. I guess what happens is that, the Chinese subbers first translate Korean into Chinese and then Chinese to English. And that's where the errors are committed.

I know right? There are many korean dramas in Japan, they are quite intersting to watch but not something I'd get addicted. I had a korean woman that I knew and she was like there could be a glass broken right beside her or maybe an earthquake and she would NEVER take her eyes from the tv while the show was going on!

My mom also loves to watch Korean drama eversince and it's become part of our trend and we are also sick in Pinoy dramas which is always using one concept, unlike Korean drama uses a lot of concept to make their shows interesting.

For me, Korean dramas are getting more and more similar, too like the Pinoy telenovelas.

I think it's the same with Korean dramas! I've seen K-dramas with the same plot, poor girl is actually the daughter or some billionaire old guy, something like that. But yeah, this is just one of the many different plots in K-dramas. There's a lot of choices unlike with Pinoy dramas.

However Korean dramas are more amusing than Pinoy telenovela because most Pinoy telenovela are predictable. Example the protagonist will start as a slumdog and he/she will become rich on the latter episodes, almost all Pinoy telenovelas are like that concept. Korean dramas somehow differs.

Yeah many people specially females are getting addicted to korean drama series. I mean they are good in quality (some less than 50 episodes) compare to Filipino drama that really sucks and long running full of fillers. I don't watch korean drama but I know that they are good quality because of people's reaction in watching it. Korean drama is suitable for teens and adults.

Can you get her a pair of headphones for her TV, or maybe a laptop with headphones, or other kind of computer, on which she can play them? That way she can watch all she wants, and it won't get on your nerves (unless you want to talk to her and she can't hear you) because you won't have to listen to them. My husband is addicted to Science Fiction, and I really wish he had a sound card on his computer, and headphones, so he could watch them that way. LOL I just go out in the afternoons when his friggen programs are on. LOL

I don't think she would like watching her favorite dramas in a laptop or a computer. She prefers to watch them in the living room, on our tv while lying on a sofa. I don't have any problems with her using the tv all by herself because I have my laptop in my room but whenever I go downstairs and pass by the living room, I see her always glued to the tv and it just irks me somehow.

My mother is also addicted to Korean dramas. Last year, she watched the Korean dramas from TV, while some of the TV series was broadcasted in the midnight, so she sat before the TV until 2 or 3 in the morning. While she has to get up at 7 in the morning. So I felt that her health is not good, so persuade her to install the net, so that she can watched them during day time and can have a good sleep. But after we have net in my home, the situation does not change so much. Soon after she arrived home, she will turn on the computer and watch Korean dramas until midnight. While comes to the Korean dramas, I think most of them are having nonsense. Why so many girls and women like to watching them?

Oh my friend, be cool. I think that your mom finally found something that really keeps her busy as long as she still performs her other duties. I think that's what makes her happy. ;) So give her that. I'm sure that's better to think about than hearing her nagging all the time. Haha!
