The prices of the power has gone up. This is making me use electrical product little less.I have cut down the use of computer and left gaming completely for good. But still i cannot avoid the needs. I download many stuff on Internet and since my internet is slow it takes time. This slow internet connection and large time to download results into lot of power consumption. I always keep my monitor on while downloading is ON.But now i want to keep my monitor off while the downloading is on, so that i can save some power bill. I don't know if this works. Mylotters can i save energy this way. And do you also keep monitors off to save power. Please help me with your knowledge. And have nice day and happy mylotting.

You do not need to leave the monitor on to download. Although you should move the mouse once in a while or your computer may go on standby and the download will then stop and you might have to start all over again. You can also shut off the switch of any electrical devices that you use. Even though you've switched off the device, the electricity will still be flowing if you leave the switch on.

I do change my power settings but for some reason, my computer still goes into standby if it goes idle for too long.. Hmm... Yup. Turning off the switches should definitely help reduce electricity costs.

You can change your power settings so that, when your computer is Idle for sometime, instead of going into standby, it just remains active or has a screen-saver. That way your download wont be cut down due to idleness. And turning of all the switches should be given primary priority in my opinion.

Switching off the monitor would save on some energy consumption especially if the monitor is the old CRT types. The modern flat screen LCD types are more energy efficient and therefore consume less energy. But still it would save you same energy and some money from your bills if you switch off the monitor even if they are CRT or LCD type monitors.

I always keep my monitors switched off while downloading things. And me, like you have completely left gaming to save power. So we have a lot in common. I have connected only my modem and CPU to my UPS. My monitor, speakers, printer and all other peripherals, I have connected separately to a Spike Buster. I switch it on only when i use them. When I run any download, I switch of the Spike Buster completely. I believe that I can save a minor amount of power. On the long run, this may gradually result in a good amount of power savings :)

To quit gaming for the purpose of saving power was the toughest job for me. But still i tried and quit it successfully. I think i should also do similar thing like you did by connecting monitor separately.

I found this post most enlightning, as I´m always trying to save energy, but I don´t know much about computer so I don´t know what to put off. I´ll check it now and learn what to keep on and what to shut off. I leave everything on all day while I take care of lights, TV and kitchen gadgets at home.

Earlier when ever i used to talk about saving energy, i talked only about light, fan, iron, etc. I always neglected computer. And since i was a hardcore gamer, my mind never thought about it but due to recent rise in power tariff i searched for ways to saving energy. While searching i came to know that power consumption increases with the increases in Wattage and i also came to know that my computer is almost 1000 watts. This made me use computer very less.

Earlier even i did not gave much attention to it. I always used slow internet, thus putting more time to download. This way the power consumption increased too much with the increase in time to download. The cost of high speed internet is more but it will save money through less power consumption if the quantity of download is more. The problem with me is that high speed internet is not available in my town. So i have to adjust with slow speed. Presently i am thinking of disconnecting the case cover fans and the case itself to save more energy.

Yes, with the electricity prices going up, I have to be careful not to be wasting at all, including computer uses. I would never keep the computer on when I am not using it. I would not keep the monitor on either while downloading programs. You are doing the right thing.

I shut down the computer including the monitor in the morning before leaving for work. I do my downloading at night, when power actually costs less if you are on that type of plan. I also have my TV, Playstation and vcr all plugged into a power strip. I unplug the power strip when they are not being used. i have not seen a big difference in my bill, but then again the cost of power is always fluctuating.
