The perks of being a working student

I work full time from 7-4 for five days in a week. I'm also a part-time student, I'm taking up my masters degree. This semester, my class schedules are T-Th, 5:30-7 PM and on Fridays 4-7 PM. Tomorrow, I will be in a field work until Wednesday so I'll be absent for my Tuesday class. I have been absent in this class for a few times and it's always because of field works. I always tell my professor whenever I will be absent so that she can excuse me and not consider absent. I'm lucky she's kind and she always tell me she understands. There have been times though that I could have attended the class after the field work but chose not to or I could have skipped the field work and attend the class but chose not to. It's because those times, I want to skip class and just work or rest. And I'm safe because my professor knows I'm in a field work. I do this at work, too. There are times I could have skipped class but chose not to just so my boss won't take me to a field work. I just tell my boss I can't skip class because I do not want to miss a lecture. I just did not want to go to the field work so I made my class as an excuse. These are the benefits of being a working student.

Interesting that you make that work both ways for you. Reminds me of when I had three part-time jobs. They all scheduled me for a Friday and I had to go on a job interview many miles away. So I got two to give me a personal or vacation day, one said I would have to call in sick that day, nothing else they could do. I went for the job interview and got paid for not working all three jobs. Personal pay, vacation pay, and sick pay. 3 pays for one day that I didn't work. It was a good thing. It cost a lot of $ for gas, clothes and food for the day.

At least you've got triple paid as consolation. That's the best consolation ever!

I didn't get the job, but I did get paid triple for not working. Yes, lucky, sometimes I am!

Yes, it is really interesting to be able to work while studying at the same time. You are lucky to have this kind of good boss in your area. In fact, there are many bosses who don't allow their staffs to work while studying at the same time. For example, my former boss ever want to take any staff who is currently pursuing their studies. Hope you will use this great opportunity to obtain great success in your studies. Good luck in your studies, Secret...

Yeah, I'm really lucky to have a supportive boss. My studies do not take away much of my working hours since my classes are after work. But sometimes, there are class field works which forces me to leave work. In those times, I just tell my boss I have to leave for a class project and he will give me a go. Thanks myfb!

haha, YEah, i agree upon that!! lol =D Being a working student has it perks for sure, but one must have understanding professor and boss to make it work. UNlike my friend, his boss always refuses to let him attend lessons until he finishes his work, while his professor always insis that he tells his boss.. haha :D At the end of it, he failed his course thrice and he's paying out of his own pocket. U'rso lucky, secret!! ^^

i understand what you are trying to mean. you are really a devil. no, just kidding. well, i believe this is one good benefit for a working student. i am just a little more fortunate than the others, like you who needs to work and still need to finish a degree. but unfortunately, i was not able to continue schooling and finish a degree.

You're still fortunate because you have a family of your own now.

I am doing a full time degree at the moment, but am also working online in my spare time i order to pay for the things that I need. I have the student loans that everyone probably gets, but I do not have an overdraft and know that I will never feel the need to get one because I look after my money properly and know that I will have enough to live on while I am finishing my degree. In fact, it is getting to the stage where I don't think I will even need a job when I graduate because the amount that I'm earning at the moment is so impressive that I will be able to buy a house and live off it probably for the rest of my life.

i was once a working student way back then in college and it is not really easy to balance household chores and academic works (i was a househelp). but when the graduation ceremonies came as if i was lifted up because i graduated with flying colors and it was so sweet to savor success out of your own hardwork.

I can imagine that! I salute people like you who worked their way through college to get a degree, who did not stop from getting education even with financial constraints. I never worked while I was in college and only now that I'm taking up my masters degree that I feel the difficulties of being a working student. Good job for you!

It is good to know that there are perks as a working student, as can be seen from words between. In fact, I also have some perks as a teacher in charge of foreign affairs though it is not an easy job to work with my foreign colleagues due to different cultural difference. Thank you for your interesting discussion. Take care, secretbear.

You'd better hope your instructor and boss don't see this discussion. . They might not appreciate the perks you see as much as you do.

I think they won't! I'm pretty sure they don't have a myLot account. My boss does not have time for this kind of stuff. I'm not sure about my professor though. But even if she has a myLot account, I don't think she would know that this is me.

You just have to be patient here. This is really a good site. You'll eventually learn better English as you go along here.
