Too Early to Start Thinking about Christmas?

So here we are in mid September, and I'm starting to think about Christmas type things. We don't do a huge great commercial Christmas in our house, but I'll be buying gifts. I know there are those who will have been buying Christmas gifts in the post Christmas sales, but I have neither the space nor the will to do that. I hate leaving things to the last minute, particularly as many of my gifts need to mailed. So mid September works for me. How about you? When do you start planning for Christmas and the holiday season?

Its only September, and technically its too early to think of Christmas, actually when we think of it now, we can say its just about time, right. Because we have to quick think what to give and who of our friends get to receive the gifts and its very hard to find good gifts especially if you are on a tight budget.

I would ratehr have the time to think of just the right gift than have to rush at the last minute and possibly get something just for the sake of it.

My rule is to make my gift list by Thanksgiving and to start shopping After Black Friday. But that was back in the day When my mom was alive and Christmas was a big deal.I used to celebrate both Christmas , for the family, and Hanukkah for me. but when I lost my mom in 2005, Christmas became just another day. So now I still try to figure out what I want by Thanksgiving and to buy what they want before Dec 24th.

Sorry Love , I totally forgot you are not from the colonies, lol! Thanksgiving is the day us Yanks give thanks. It is always the third Thursday in November. Black Friday is the next day. Most have a 4 day holiday. So on That Friday most merchants start their Christmas sales. Stores open at 4am and stay open until about 12am! But it is a madhouse! No One who loves shopping Really want to go out on that day. Why? The sale prices are not worth the experience of the pushing a the long waits in cue! so that is why I start After Black Friday. Forgive me. It wasn't American Arrogance more like Yankee assumption.

Our sales start AFTER Christmas, when shops try and shift the stuff they didn't sell in the run up. Saying that, there seem to be almost permanent sales going on now. I remember when sales used to start on the 1st January, but now some shops start on Boxing Day. I've only ever joined in the sales madness once, which was years ago when a local store had a couple of flagship items at really really ridiculously low prices. I joined the queue at some outrageously early time of morning and bagged my bargain, but the normal sale mania is not my idea of fun at all.

I've no idea when Thanksgiving falls, or what Black Friday is, but like you i have a mental calendar I use. Mine is based on family birthdays. Once those are in sight I start to think about Christmas.

Since I try to make something for each person, usually I start as soon as I can. I just started a couple days ago to make something for one of my brothers. My husband will be making things soon. I hate waiting until the last minute because the stores get so packed with so many crazy people. Even if you make things. you still need supplies or basic materials.

If you are making gifts, I completely understand the need to start as early as possible. I do give some home made gifts of food stuffs, but those are things I will prepare anyway so I don't think of them as specific holiday preparations.

I lived and worked in Asia. And there's a place there where people think that Christmas starts when the months start to end in -ber! So for them September 1 is the official start of Christmas. Personally, I think it's way too early. I think planning for Christmas should be done after Halloween and Thanksgiving!

I really do not believe that there is a time frame to be thinking about Christmas. In fact, the gifts I will be giving out, I buy immediately after Christmas season in the malls where discounts and sale events usually happen.

hi:) Here in the Philippines we can already here Christmas carols, so it's impossible not to think of Christmas this early, and when we go to the malls there is already some decorations for Christmas on some place, me I already doing some listings on what to do and what gift to buy, so when there's a clearance sale this month I will try to buy some:D hehe I'll use my mylot earnings for that:D

I agree GreenMoo.....Christmas carols and decorations already? Here in Tennessee, it's still in the 80s. Way to early for me to think of Christmas. Besides, it is to commercialized for me. Although, I may buy gifts, I rarely go beyond that in participating.

Not really! It depends on what all plannings you have to do LOL..here in my city/ country, the best festivals are just round the corner, starting from October. However, you should see the ladies planning and shopping and going the entire stretch from as early as June/July itself. They’ll do the rounds of shops at leisure, choosing their sarees and dress materials and then the accessories etc. after that they will do the round of tailors for that perfect fit…also tailors here stop accepting orders at least a month in advance… so you can well imagine how early the preparations start!

I don't think it's too early to start--you'll have a more organized holiday and can enjoy the true meaning of Christmas instead of being under a lot of stress! This year will be different for me--I'll be giving away most of my decorations and even a big artificial tree and lots and lots of lights. I don't use them, why not give them to people who will enjoy them? Halloween stuff, too. I usually start my Christmas shopping about now, if not earlier, because it takes awhile to find just the right thing. Except for my sons, my family prefers you make gifts or spend no more than $5. I like that policy, it's challenging and fun.

I'm not big on decorations and trees. If you could have them just for one or two days that would be nice, but it's hardly worth putting them up just for that.

It definitely is way too early for me to start thinking about Christmas. It is true that I don't really like to leave things too at the last minute, but when it comes to things like this, I don't always like to start too early. There are other events before Christmas that I do need to think about before I get to think of Christmas.

I'll be buying some things by post, then having to post them on. So it works for me to have a little extra time.

I don't think that it is too early to be thinking about Christmas at all. At the end of the day, we all have to be able to afford to buy the things that we need to buy around that time, and that means that we should start planning for things that we're going to buy for both our friends and our families. I have already decided what I am buying for most of them, which means that I know how much money I will need to earn between now and then in order to do so. My parents own our house so they will be paying for the food and things like that, so that's a little bit of a weight off my mind which will help an awful lot to be honest with you.

It's fine to think about it. Being ahead would lighten the burden of a last minute shopping where everybody does. I would go for an advance buying of gift items, doing so would be a very practical move to be in away from a crowded place.

I actually usually have mine done by this time every year. But not this year.I am getting ready to get started now.But I usually pick up something throughout the year and have a bag in my closet and put the items in there. It's nice to not have to be out in the Christmas rush. Some people like that,I don't.I had rather be done and not have to get out in the crowds.

In our culture, the -ber months marks the start of Christmas and we start planning and even shopping for Christmas gifts. I have started making my list and do little shopping when I have the chance to go out. I think this is a good way to avoid the rush and crowded malls when we do the shopping in December. I think its not a bad thing to plan ahead of time.

I am one of those who shops right after Christmas and picks up little things for my kids and grandkids. I get them each a gift card but like sending a little something for them to open. So in about a month I'll open the container where I store them.....and it's so much fun seeing what I bought! LOL...sometimes I forget!

My problem with doing that would be that I would lose or damage the gifts between one end of the year and the other!

No way it's too soon to plan for Christmas, I've already done some shopping and I'll be doing more this month. I also want to give some hand-made things as gifts, including some of my knitting and things like that, so I have to plan them carefully if I want them finished. Probably I won't finish all of them, so I'll still have to buy some gifts last minute, but anyway.

I know from experience that I'll never manage to make home made things other than food items, so I won't bother to try this year. If you are one of those people who are clever enough to manage it then I completely understand how you need to start early.

I wonder what the post Christmas sales is.I don't know whether they are mailed gifts or stuffs that are sold after Christmas .even though Christmas is more than three months away, but You start to think about gifts, you are really a thrifty lady.
@GreenMoo (11834)

There is normally a sale after Christmas where they sell off all the Christmas related items and gifts at a discount. some people buy all their wrapping paper and cards, and lots of presents for the following year. I don't. I wouldn't be able to store it for a year.

Oh ! I get it.Thanks a lot for explaining it! Surely bargain hunters like doing that. For storing it for a year,It not that takes up room but also can't say for sure that something won't go bad.

I haven't plan anything yet for Christmas and the holiday season, but I already played Christmas songs especially songs from Jessica Simpson's Happy Christmas album! I play them everyday, I just don't know why but I just love hearing over and over again Jessica Simpson's song especial Here Comes Santa Claus / Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and My Only Wish.

Oh too bad. Here in my country you'll heard Christmas songs played like 2 or 3 days before Christmas and 21 or 2 days after Christmas, then you'll never hear it again until the next Christmas. That's why I listen to it at home. "It's Christmas time"
