I Think My Son is Having Suffering From Growing Pains

So every night now for the last week my 5 year old has been complaining that his legs are hurting down in his shin area. He wants me to rub them so he can go to sleep. My husband seems to remember the same thing happening to him, just not when he was so young maybe when he was around 9 or 10 and his doctor told him it was normal and it was growing pains. I give him tylenol and rub his legs and he doesn't complain about them hurting in the morning. Do you think that 5 years old is too young to have growing pains? Could it be because he started kindegarten this year and is at school for a full day instead of the 1/2 day with preschool? Have you or your children gone through this and could you give me some advice?

Hi qtfrog99.. I remember my younger siblings complaining when they were quite young and still even nowadays.. so my solution is one of three things.. Warm up some olive oil *not the one you cook with*.. and rub that gently into the area of pain.. and cover with a bandage to ensure its fully absorbed, and the best time to do this is before bed.. hence the reason for the bandage.. You could try using witch hazel too.. this sort of speeds up the 'pain' if that makes any sense, but I dont usually use this for the kids- but for myself... And the third is using lavender oil.. you can use this in many ways, put in the bath while he has a bath, which will also help with him sleeping.. or you could apply this straight onto the leg, the same way the olive oil.. Its unfortunate..as a parent you cant take the pain away, but there are many remedies to ease or even prevent the pain.. but theres no stopping him growing LOL.. Hope he feels much better soon.. (",)

Thank you so much, and yes as a parent we wish we could take every ouchie away and make every boo boo better, but when we can't we feel so bad. I did try the warm bath I didn't have lavender oil , but I used the johnson and johnson lavender baby bath and it did, it relaxed him and I was able to put him to sleep with no problems. Thanks for the great idea.

Sounds a lot like growing pains to me. I used to get them when I was younger too and it was also in the shin area. He's probably fine and I don't think it's too young, he could just be going through a growth spurt. I don't think it has anything to do with being in school because it's not like he's standing around all day. I'm sure he plays outside, sits at a table, and also sits on the floor. I think you're doing well trying to keep him comfortable when this happens to him. I wouldn't worry too much about him being too young but maybe tell his doctor the next time he has to go.

My daughter is 6 and she has been complaining of the same pains. I remember having them too. I take her to a specialist because her hip was dislocated when she was born. I asked her specialist who specializes in joints, sports injuries etc and she said it sounds like growing pains to her. She said sometimes kids just don't realize that they are overdoing it. He probably is more active at kindergarten and plays hard a recess. My daughter likes to do the monkey bars, so if she is dropping down off them it could be jarring her legs. I'd say it's nothing to worry about unless the pain gets worse.

Thanks so much for responding, I am going to keep an eye on him, I told my hubby that if by Friday no improvement it won't hurt just for the doc to take a look at him.

Hi qtfrog, I remember one of my friends went to the doctor with the same complaint, her son felt pain in his legs and he was 5 years (now he is 10 years) at that time and he is similar to the age my elder son. The doctor told her that it is nothing but growing pain. Actually I heard this term for the first time from her. If it is the same problem with your son then nothing to worry but you can consult your son’s pediatrician over phone and ask an opinion. Give him healthy foods enriched with calcium, iron etc

I also have a 5 year old, and he also has started kindergarten. But I've never noticed any of these growing pains. What I have noticed though is that he's been taking a lot of naps. I think this is just from the jump of the 2-hours a day, 2-days a week pre-school, to a full day kindergarten.
