I think it's how Shamcey answered it

And not the question that was asked to Ms. Angola that made her Ms. Universe 2011. I agree with most of you and even with the statement of Oprah Winfrey that she answered with out hesitation and didn't give herself time to think. but there's a saying, you can make "short and sweet" still the best answer you could give. she did answer it in english, but i guess it wasn't the best answer. She was asked if she will change her religion because of her love one. it was good when she answered She won't because GOD made her for who she is, but some how her last sentence didn't impress the judges. She said, if he loves, he should love her GOD. the could have been the right sentence there was "respect her religion and GOD" it was like asking the love on to left his religion and convert into hers. it's not a major2x thing but we have to read between the lines and this was some what easy to recognize. Oh, well at least she got the third placer...that's what's important, right? I am happy at least she won something.

We really don't know what's running in the mind of judges. We would never know if it would be the first, second or third sentence that makes the answer wrong. What I'm trying to say is that, the answer in general might be viewed in different perspective by other judges. Some may agree, some may not. Some may find it right, and some might be offended. What if one of the judges is married to a different religion. Then the answer might be offensive in some way.

Hello Pepper, I think in my view it was easy enough to say that answer could have been a bit better and shorter if she didn't mention her last sentence. i think it's clear that the answer was something that the judges weren't expecting. this is not an english speaking pageant i believe. but i guess she was pressured to so it's alright.

I think so. She might be nervous. But in my own view, i will not be satisfied if the answer is short. I like the way she answered it. She did not answer it like "it depends" just to be neutral. She answered it with conviction and direct to the point. Is just that, we really can't expect everybody to agree.

That is my point as well that she was supposed to use the term "respect" instead of love or it can be "he should respect my God too". Actually when I've heard her answer I had this feeling that I am not satisfied like I think there was something wrong. As I reviewed her answer all over again I realized that her answer "he should love my God too" has a repercussion, since they are talking about religious beliefs then it is like the guy has to be the same religion as her or he should glorify and praise her God as well, and of course I can't also avoid thinking that she is going to imposed something. Since this is a beauty pageant the choices of words which must be accurate is really part of measurement for the judge's criteria. That is part of the challenge and we can't really change that fact. Because that could be also the basis of how confident and smart you are when answering the questions quickly. What would be your first quick reaction when you are going to ask some random questions like how are you going to handle, solve, analyze and what is your conviction with your answer. Just like the case of Venus Raj I am thinking that I think the judges wants her to answer the accurate situation of how she was been able to solve that problem when she have done her biggest mistake. They were expecting that she will be giving some example of her mistake. Though I can't blame Venus is she wasn't able to do that because the question was too personal and yet it is not easy to reveal your mistakes in front of millions of viewers that are watching you on air. Same with Shamcey I can't also blame her if she wasn't able to answer the question accurately or if she haven't used the right term because if you are in a contest it is not easy to think fast that can impress the judges. But of course being true to themselves will be also included in criteria.

Added to my post in my first paragraph: I watched the youtube again and saw her accurate answer she even mentioned that "If I had to change my religious beliefs, I will not marry the person that I love." I think on the first part it was misleading already. She was only asked if she has to change her religious beliefs to the person she loves, again of course it was about changing of religious beliefs. She wasn't ask if she is going to marry a guy if she has to change her religious beliefs. And that thing I think it didn't really impressed the other judges since they analyzed it already and of course they have different beliefs as well.

Oh dear on the other hand what made me so pleased with her response is the last part. I think Shamcey has given the best response of all in fact. Oh well, each of us do have opinions of our own anyway. It just happened that we are not the judges. but yes, we have to happy that at least she got the 4th place and that is already a big accomplishment. What pleased me more is that after the big blunder of Venus "Major, major" Raj, Shamcey proves to all that Filipinas are smart after all.

Hello Salonga, Loving God in every religion is an individuals choice and affirmed strong conviction. the judges were probably expecting her to say in terms of "respect" in either religions iin the relationship, but she said something differently even though we thought it was the smartest answer of all compare to those who have interpreters. anyways, the judge were expecting an answer, they just didn't expect that answer from her.

The question is, would we rather have a crowned candidate who would give an answer just to please the judges? I'm not being too defensive about Shamcey here but she answered with honor and integrity and I think that is much more important than a crown. She was raised to be religious and I can't blame her if she answered that way. Although in these times, we know that for other people, religion is not a hindrance in a relationship, what if to Shamcey it was? Let's turn the table around. What if one of the judges has had gazillions of cosmetic surgery done on her body and getting an answer like that from Ms. Angola, wouldn't she be offended? We never really know what goes on in the mind of the judges. That's all I can say.

Hello Theresaaiza, Her answer was honorable and honest but i think this answer isn't something that was expected of the judges and thus, didn't give her such impact. I think that's not the situation there and if the tables were different then other contestants would have won, likely Ms. Philippines. well, they have different perceptions.

Well I believe it is not about pleasing the judges but she must be direct to the point on the question or she can answer the question which can be accurate. I am sure the judges are not expecting her that she must change her religion to marry the guy but the point is she was not asked if she should marry the guy she loves in order for her to change her religion. The question is really simple like are you going to change your religious beliefs why or why not? Again the question is about religious beliefs.

She pointed clear that she have her own principles and that's what makes her character. It is a definite answer, a solid and brave one, not even difficult to understand. I really like her answer because she is not sugar coating it in favor of what others may think but because she has her standards too as a woman, as a person with belief and she stands out from the rest of the 88 candidates. I truly agree that even if she did not win the crown, for me she is still the Ms. Universe 2011 winner and it was an advantage of not getting an interpreter too. Well, you really can't please everyone. If others think that was not the good answer so what? everyone has their own opinion, why not try to be a contestant too and be put to pressure to answer it abruptly in from of hundreds or thousands of people on national television.

Hello Strawberry, Definitely something the jugdes didn't like to hear because even though she was honest herself it didn't give her the advantage to have the cown. i believe she did her best but my thoughts are probably base on what teh judges think of her answer.

I like her explanation about having her own principles in order to her religious conviction but then I believe answering that she will not marry the person she loves wouldn't be necessary because she was only asked if she has to change her religion to marry the person she loves.

I dont see anything wrong with her answer. It is her religious conviction which nobody, not even a beauty contest, can change overnight. The question I think is improper and should not have been asked in a contest like this. It is like judging the religious/moral ideology of a contestant. What will she do, sugarcoat her answer (better known as lie) just to win? She was obviously not a politician, so she answered according to what she believes. We cannot really blame her for that. In my mind, Ms. Angola won because she was favored. No matter how I look into it.

But the point is her answer about her religious conviction was not accurate. She should have said in the first place that she will not change her religious belief and she wasn't asked if she must marry the person she loves in order for her to change her religious belief. I believe she has been 100% honest with her answer but we just keep in mind that we have to understand what is the point of the question.

Hello greenpeas, It's not in the Judges control as to what they should ask to the contestant. Lea Salonga indeed clarify this to every one on her twitter account. what happened here was that what she believed seemed to be an inaccurate answer for the judges. the answer itself has it's flaws.

i was not able to watch the entire contest so i could not give exact opinion according to the questions and the answers. i did hear them only from the news. i would like to agree with one of the respondents here that the question asked to shamcey isn't appropriate to this kind of contest. of course, we can only be proud that she made it as a runner-up. we should be happy that at least, and we almost made it.

Hello Neildc, I think any question was appropriate knowing she had knowledge but her answer was not appropriate in the view of the Judges. I don't know how the first and second runner was ever consider rated or scored. At least she was able to earn something from the pageant compare to other candidates

Oh well, whatever it is we think of her answer, I am happy to know that her boyfriend, Lloyd Lee, changed his religious beliefs for her. I am sure Shamcey is happy too. Because she did not have to change her religion but her boyfriend changed his for her. Lloyd chose to love her God too! Hi Letran Knight: I think that was a difficult question and probably that was the real answer she wanted to say. There's a lot of pressure on an international competition, I understand people make mistakes on these situations. And well, I like new Miss Universe as well. ALVARO

hi LK, Well politics and religion are questions I don't want to answer because we have different beliefs on it but the way she answered it well I can say she is really a brilliant one she answered it the moment after the question was asked unlike the other contestant has an interpreter and has a time to think first. Well still it's another honor for our country thanks to her happy mylotting

Hello catch, Good for her that she answered it well but the content wasn't satisfying to the judges that looses her points there. she answered it honestly and with out taking too much time. i am not even sure if those interpreters are nothing more than just changing words and making their answers good

it really didn't impress the judges because instead of converting to Shamcey's religion, why not combine your religion's strong points and Shamcey's different religion strong points also, because there is no perfect religion... after all, by combining both religion's strong points, it makes you closer to God...

Hello Mantis, I have read the updates that her answer was some what influence by her moms strict advice that she should marry a person in her religion and should be centered by god. something that didn't impress the judges and she should have given a safe and general or common answer to that and it's the word "respect" well, it's in the past now
