jeepneys overtaking each other

Whenever I go to our hometown to visit it, I would always take the jeepney. I enjoy riding them. But I was shocked when the jeepney I was riding last Saturday , suddenly went so fast, that I had to grip its railings. The driver was trying to overtake another jeepney, so as to first get the passengers by the roadside. I have to control myself because I was so nervous already. I even have to close my eyes. I was ashamed of myself, but I guess the other passengers felt the same way. Suddenly, I found myself, calling the driver to stop so I can alight and find another jeepney. The driver asked why, because he knows it’s not the place yet that I told him when I paid him. So I told him, and he apologized and told me not to alight anymore, because he will moderate his driving. So, I did and the rest of the journey was fine. I felt ashamed though with myself.

I think you're too kind. You could have called his attention and gave him a sermon on putting his passengers lives in danger but instead you opted to alight and even pay him. When I was younger, I like a fast ride, the faster they go the more I like it but now I guess things have changed. That's the main reason why I don't ride buses in EDSA if given a choice since buses there are just like super cars trying to outrun each other unmindful of the smaller vehicles around them.

I also like fast cars. Then and until now. But, there are just times that jeepney drivers could make the ride verrry scary. Especially when they're trying to overtake other cars. The thing I hate about buses is that they honk too often, the loudness is annoying.

Thanks for saying that i was too kind Ybong. I guess, i was already so scared that i don't have the nerve to go near him and make that sermon. I also experienced overtaking bus rides in Manila , when i was still working there. But i guess, because they are big, they don't scare me well enough to make me scold them. Yes, glory, those honking of the buses are really annoying. Why do they do that for, in the first place.

Ybong, you have your point there. Had i given it while i am inside the jeep, i bet he would make it run crazier until i fall on my seat. So, the honking was to inform the passenger that there's still enough space inside the bus. Now i know.

Don't be ashamed. You did a good thing, at least all of you were safe. Sometimes, when I'm in that situation, I ask the driver to slow down. A lot of accidents on the road happen because of reckless driving. Sometimes I think that drivers should be constantly oriented on their liabilities in case of accidents considering that they are public carriers. Their liability is more compared to ordinary drivers.

I guess , i really did the right thing. I would really alight and wait for another jeepney to pass by, rather than risk my life in that. Sometimes, some drivers can really be so reckless.

this is one thing that i miss for years because i have not been using this public utility. i used to ride jeepneys while i was still working in the financial district of manila. but now that i am here in the visayas and owned a motorcycle, i seldom ride a jeep. but even in this place, we can also see jeepneys overtaking each other as if they own the road.

Well, neildc it's really nice to ride in a jeepney. Here in the city they cannot do that. There are lots of jeepney plying to and from our offices, so we really get to pick our choice . But in some rural areas they do that to get more passengers. Be always careful neildc, in riding your motorcycle.

The driver's nice actually :) There's no need to feel ashamed since you did the right thing. It's better to be safe than sorry :D At least he listened to his passenger :D I know what you mean about these overtaking jeepenys :P Lol~ I just responded before on your discussion involving jeepneys and I'm responding on one again :P This incident commonly happen in Manila area, especially the Quiapo and SM Manila area. I LITERALLY handed on the rails whenever jeppneys zoomed past each other. It's a scary experience really :P

When i worked in Manila, i guess i haven't experienced that. Maybe because it's rush hours so, basically they are already filled to the brim as to passengers. It happens in our province too. Actually, the road is wide because there were not many coming and going jeepneys except the two of them. But then, i feel so scared that the jeep might go wrong. I guess, the driver is really nice to do that for me. Maybe he pitied me, after seeing me so pale already.

You have nothing to be ashamed of in the first place. You are riding in a Public Utility Vehicle and PUV driver's have the responsibility and are required by law to drive carefully and not as if they are racing with Schumacher. They were not force by anyone to drive a PUV and so then, they are oblige to conform with safe driving rules. However, Philippines is a country with so many undisciplined drivers who are virtually road killers to be. We can do little to change this kind of system but we can do much to protect ourselves. Therefore, once we go out, our vigilance and senses should always be up. As the commander told his soldiers on a dangerous mission, KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN. Have a nice day

I also think that as passengers we have the right to call the attention of the driver, whenever we see that his driving is something that can already endanger the lives of the passengers.
@SIMPLYD (90722)

And the driver would even tell you to find another jeep to ride.

Yes, it is our right to do that. It is a basic fact that PUV drivers should be responsible and careful because lots of lives will be put in danger by a single act of recklessness. Reality tells us,however, that although we have the right to do this, many drivers of PUV's are not paying attention to it. Some would even dare to fight the concern individual making it look like he is the one at fault instead of the reckless driver.

I'm afraid I don't know what a jeepney is. We have jeeps here, but I don't know if that's what you mean. People normally drive their own jeeps here and don't hire other people to drive them. Could you explain this to me?

Jeepneys are public transportations here, just like buses, but smaller. Actually, they're modified jeeps. When the jeeps were introduced in this country, some entrepreneur thought of renting out his jeep to people who didn't have a car. But, then, the jeep got longer and longer, to accomodate people.

@gloryacam, actually it was the Americans who introduced the jeep to our country during the second World War, jeeps were what the humvee is now in the U.S. military, or actually the humvee replaced the jeep. So at the end of the second world war, their was so many U.S. military hardware left that enterprising Filipinos converted the jeep to private as well as public transport and evolved to what is now the jeepney, more ornate in design and built for passengers but still bears a little semblance to the fighing jeep

Hi SIMPLYD! Nothing to be ashamed of, in fact I'm really impressed on the way you have handle this case or scenario. You really have shown some patient and even modesty to this greedy jeepney driver. I know that jeepney drivers rely heavily on their income (particularly the boundary scheme driver), but they should do this properly without risking the safety of their passengers. Acts like this are very common also here in our province where drivers are racing to get passengers (even unloading passenger in the center of the road to avoid the next jeepney in overtaking them). Have a nice day!

Well, i only relied on my instinct and that is to be safe. I don't want to prolong the agony of thinking that it being so, an accident may happen.

I don't like public transportation overtaking each other as well. I'm glad your driver listened. Some other will do the opposite and will drive faster than their current speed seemingly to irritate more the passengers. You don't need to be ashamed. It is a natural reaction. Safety is really important and everyone I think will agree. Most of the drivers are driving real fast hoping to earn more money. I just hope they realize that it is really dangerous. It could lead to accident and damages and they could end up spending more. Also they are jeopardizing their health.

I guess, no one really likes to ride in jeepneys that go so fast just to overtake another. It is primarily our safety that is what is in our head, when they do that. There's every chance that those who do that would meet accidents. Hence, it is our obligation to protect ourselves and what i did was to protect mine.

those jeepneys bound to Marikina, Antipolo, San Mateo, have jeepney drivers who enjoys driving very fast. some of them even have loud speakers, and i suspect some drivers are even high. it's a good thing that i don't get to go to those places often. and more often, we go there not commuting. be safe. i find it funny that you hailed stop and tell the driver the reason why. i will do that next time ha ha

Well, i took the courage to do that, lest i will end up feeling so shaky afterwards. I value my life and just don't want it to lose to an accident, should that happen.

You know asliah, i would rather be late at work, than be as if having a heart attack at anytime by riding in a so fast jeepney and at the same time overtaking each other. I still love to live.

you should not have felt ashamed, if he was over speeding then you should have told him that he is violating the law and endangering your lives, yes but I understand you were scared already. What I hate about jeeps is when they are side to side with your vehicle" ga buhok" ( as thin as hair), one wrong move and they will scratch your car but they do not care cause they are only public vehicles and when this happens they have no money to pay, they also change from one lane to the other if they see a passenger or suddenly stop in the middle of the road when you are tailing them just so a passenger could go down

Oh i always have the experience of our jeep having a "ga buhok" experience with another car. It scares the lot of my very nervous self. That's true, they all have the nerve of driving that way, yet when accident happens they would be imploring to spare them because they don't have money to spare.

some drivers dont really think about their passenger's welfare. all they think about getting to their destination faster by hook or by crook. when accidents happen, they will look so pitiful and truly sorry. they should think about it in advance though. and drive more safely.

Yeah, you are correct that they just want to get to their destination faster. However, i think it is prohibited by LTO to over speed , much more drive recklessly like overtaking. Next time, i will take note of their plate numbers and report them .

You don't have to feel bad because I think you did the right thing. I would also tell the driver that if I am in your place. My life is in the hands of the driver and he is responsible to drive carefully. I have experienced that a lot of times and I have spoken up every single time I experienced that. I think drivers should not drive fast just to take a lot of passengers.

Thank you for saying so. Sometimes though, if i happen to be near the back of the driver, i would certainly request him to slow down, complete with gesture that i might have a heart attack ( white lie). But when that incident happened, i was at the far end of the long seat from the driver. I will shout if i have to tell him. So, i chose to do that. Good thing, he realized his mistake.

it is good that you have told the driver to slow down a bit because a lot of drivers now are really driving crazy they are putting their passenger's life at stake. i have also experienced that when i would ride a tricycle home. even tricycle drivers would try to have a race with jeepneys and it is really terrible! i don't think there on for the time but for who's the fastest. i would really feel bad after i step down from that tricycle cause i never complained i am not good at reprimanding strangers.

Yes, i have to tell him because i would want to alight already and transfer to another jeepney that may come along. Good thing, he is kind also to apologize. Like you, here in our place , where we have to take a pedicab to get to the subdivision where our house is. Some pedicab drivers would drive so fast and so near the rear of another pedicab. I definitely , scold the driver doing that. Good thing, they too are kind.

Should they want to race with one another, they should do that when they have no passengers. They can race at their heart's content! But with passengers, they must be wanting to be jailed later for reckless driving?
