Which I can save more?

I plan a vacation this Christmas season with my family. I'm looking of promo fare in the internet. I wanna ask this to my fellow mylotters especially to those who traveled frequently, is booking online cheaper than to get directly to their main or any field airline offices? How it differ and in what way I can save more? Sharing info is highly appreciated.

I always book online and it is cheaper since I can check and check and check over again each day at many different airline companies. I also found out that frequently the airline company is more expensive if I book with them as when I book online by a company (they bought the seats already and hope they can sell them for ...).
I assume that is everywhere in the world the same.
