Alektorophobia is an excessive and abnormal fear of chickens or other feathered creatures or of flying animals or birds. Some rationale for this fear might be a general fear of birds being coordinated to attack. For almost 5 years now, I find discovered that I have this extreme fear of chickens. I can touch a snake or even a cockroach, I can go to high places but I'm a dead meat if there's a chicken or feathered creature nearby
My college friends used to laugh at me because of this. I'm terribly afraid of chickens specially the big ones. One famous acoustic singer in our country seems to be afraid of chickens too. Haha I'm not alone! I'm just wondering if there's anyone here who is afraid of chickens?

I laughed at the title. But sadly, though not very common, fears like this do exist. I personally am not afraid of birds except when they pop up outta nowhere and scare you. I guess anything that popup out of nowhere especially if it can move can scare you.
I personally am not afraid of anything, but like I said I get spooked when something jumps out at me. For example, spiders to scare me but if your sitting down and all of a sudden it crawls on you without you knowing it and then you see it, I would freak out..
But I enjoy chickens, well I guess I hate them cause I eat them Ha ha. If I loved them I wouldn't eat them right? .

Wow! No, I'm not afraid of chickens or birds. I've had a few birds in my lifetime. I love them. I've seen people who are afraid of birds, cats and almost anything.

Hi chiwasaki!
That's indeed a very odd phobia! But you eat chickens, right?
I don't have that kind of phobia. My nephew has some chickens he take care of and sometimes I even hate these chickens because they just fly anywhere they like, they stay anywhere they like. Sometimes I throw stones at them.
And I don't eat chickens anymore but fried chickens really smell good. I developed an allergy so I can't eat chickens anymore. .

I wonder what would cause you to have this fear. Are you afraid of them flying over your head? I can understand that. I get that way during the Summer when the bats are out. They have been known to get into a person's hair and cause all kinds of problems. But me, I love birds. Love to watch them flying.

I can’t say that I am particularly afraid of chickens although I may feel a little worried if I happened to be chased by a big rooster or something! It is interesting to hear about the different fears and phobias people can have. I once read on a website that there is a fear of spontaneous human combustion, in fact a couple of people have written about their own phobias in regards to this. They feel their bodies becoming hot and become convinced they are going to spontaneously combust. I guess no phobia is too bizarre and fear is fear I suppose….Keep away from those chickens won’t you!

Wait, do you mean live chickens?? If yes then, yes I am extremely scared of chickens and can never catch them. And since i am scared of them, they know and hey chase me away LOL actually the thing is, I am scared of everything that walks or crawls. Dogs scare me, cats scare me even more. I am scared of cockroaches and can never even touch one. I am scared of bugs and bees and so on!!

I am definitely not afraid of chickens. I have never heard of such a fear. I do hate spiders though, and am very frightened of them. Apparently my fear is not a phobia though.

Afraid of chickens? no, they are very tasty... don't know much about the live ones, tho my first grade class had baby chicks we hatched, they were cute...
I'm afraid of grills on the ground tho... they make me very nervous, I won't walk on one if I can avoid it.

Hiya chi,
No not afraid of Chickens as such even though they can peck you. When I was small I was forever looking after them and giving them to eat one used to try and peck me all the time but I found a few tricks to get round her.
In any case she ended up on the Dinner Table so that was the only Chicken I had any trouble with.
Not afraid of Birds in general either although there are Birds that can be kind of scary like the Ostrich and the Emu simply because of their size and Geese can be nasty tempered as well.
Swans you have to be wary of them also as not all of them are pacific creatures as they might seem.
Perhaps something else frightened you but you are seeing the other fear in the Chickens or Birds or anything like you mentioned.
Usually if you are afraid to fly on a Plane its not the Plane you are afraid of its something deeper than that but you don´t know what it is.
Could be any silly thing that happened before anything you probably would not associate with this fear you have now.
I used to be afraid of Spiders and Cockroaches and Daddy Long Legs but now I am not afraid of either but because I sat facing them and gradually my fear went away.
Not that they can´t startle you.
A big Spider in the Kitchen this morning made me jump a bit but then I was trying to get it to go out of the open door into the fresh air he was more afraid of me than I was of him.
Your Friends should not laugh as it is a phobia but something else is surely causing it.
I´m not afraid to admit I have had fears of other things you should seek help with it if you can and if not try to reduce your sensitivity if you can if you can´t don´t feel bad about it either we all have some fear of something.
I used to be petrified of Dogs but because one tried to attack my Mom while she was pregnant with me it was a very vicious Dog but that is a logical reaction.
But sometimes the reaction you develop is not so logical its disguised as something else I would say only sometimes.
We are all so complex and yet very fragile too.xxx

Hi friend. Yes there's a silly thing that happened before. The scary rooster flew at me, at my face and flap its wings. Though the rooster is not interested with me, but my food. The encounter is really scary and I won't forget it. Haha

Hiya chi,
Oh yes we had a Rooster that used to do that as well try and fly on top of the Bucket of Food and take over it and try to peck you if you did not let go.
Like I said he ended up on the Dinner Table elsewhere he he he.
That Rooster was only after all the Food the bossy thing he was always trying to rule the roost but he was annoying to go with it.
By the way as large as life that same Spider I put outside this Morning has come straight back in again just like its her House lol.
So this time I have invited her to go to somebodies House instead of mine perhaps she will take a liking to theirs instead.
I told her look this is not your House and I can´t keep saving your life as one of these is bound to just bash her one with the Broom as they hate Spìders not so funny eh?xxx

Hmmm, I take it that you don't eat chicken meat?
That's something. It's my first time to encounter such a person who is afraid of chicken. In my environment, one cannot do away with chickn cause they seem to be everywhere!

Chicken meat is fine with me. I'm just afraid of the live ones specially the flying ones. It is difficult for me to walk alone because I might encounter a chicken since there's a lot here in the Philippines.

Oh I see. My father is fond of chicken fighting. In fact, he's raising lots of them, varying with breeds. He is such a fanatic on cockfighting. I for one was influenced in a way. My friends thought I was a tomboy for being able to touch chickens in a "sugarol" kind of way. They used to make fun of me by taking pictures of me holding a fighting chicken.

i don't think i'm scared of chickens, though to be honest most of the ones i have ever met have been wrapped in plastic and on sale in the local supermarket, which might help!

I still eat chicken and I don't mind touching chicken meat. But I will freak out if there's a live chicken in front of me. Though I'm a bit sad if someone will hurt these creatures since I'm an animal lover still.

Wow is their even such thing? I can't believe there's a name for it. I'm pretty sure a snake is far more dangerous than a feathered chicken. What can a chicken do to you?
I love birds and I have no fear of them. I use to own a whole cage of parrots and I had chickens. I wouldn't touch them though but watching and feeding them is okay for me.

Most of my friends are also afraid of snakes and cockroaches. I don't like snakes if there's a lot of them. Specially the black ones, it is kind of gross and scary.

chiwasaki,
Call me a cynic but I do not think you have Alektorophobia.
To be honest, I feel you should not be too quick unless you've been diagnosed by psychiatrists, psychologists and/or specialists in this field where you will likely be asked a number of questions to understand all the symptoms you may be experiencing, and you may need to submit to a medical interview and physical examination.
A phobia may be associated with a number of other mental-health conditions, especially other anxiety disorders. As anxiety disorders in general may be associated with a number of medical conditions or can be a side effect of various medications, routine laboratory tests are often performed during the initial evaluation to rule out other possible causes of the symptoms.
No offense, I believe you should not add unnecessary pressure to yourself by calling conditions when it might just be some normal anxiety when it can have similar symptoms. Phobias are usually more extreme and it need to be diagnosed to be managed and controlled accordingly so that it does not affect one's mental health.
Anyway, since you recognize that there is a problem - it would really help for you to seek out a medical professional to deal with it.

Thanks skysuccess. I read some symptoms of this phobia and I'm not experiencing most it. But there are some symptoms that I experience whenever I encounter a chicken like sweating and fast heart beat. I agree with you, phobias are more extreme, probably I'm just experiencing anxiety. So far, I can still manage it. Thanks so much for your advise.

I am not afraid of chicken. In fact when i was young before, i always helps my grandmother to feed their chicken and ducks. I am always in fear of ducks. Whenever i feed them, they always chase after me and always using their beaks to try to bite me. I missed my youth time, where i am always helping my grandmother to feed chicken and ducks. Now, in my present place, i can't feed chicken and ducks since they are smelly and dirty. Sometimes, it is great staying in village area....

It's the first time I hear about this fear. Have you always had that or do you know how it started? Perhaps been attacked by chickens once?
I have had chickens and they were really like pets. They were also great with the cats and the rabbits so perhaps they were not normal or?
Now I have a barn owl. I think a barn owl is more friendly as chickens are since you know they don't use their beak to attack you.
I love geese, had one too, great animal but at the school of my kids are 3 and they are really scaring since they attack.
It's always good to know you are not alone with your fear and I think it's not something to make fun about like your college friends used to.

I was attacked by a rooster when I was young. It flew right on my face and that's when I start fearing these creatures. But parrots, owls and cockatoos are not scary to me.

wow! this surprise me that there are people who are afraid of chickens. i am not afraid of chicken because we have bunch of them at home though there was this one time i have encountered a hen i was trying to shoo them away from my path since i was sweeping that time and it surprised me that instead of going away from my direction which other chickens normally do she jumped over me and tried to attack me. good thing i was holding something to protect me from her attack. luckily even if i was attacked i didn't have that fear/ phobia.

One aggressive rooster flew at me before. I was actually eating something during that time. Probably the rooster flew at me because of the food that I'm eating.
